The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  4th February 2026

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Transpire (verb)

Meaning: as in to happen (होना)

Synonyms: happen, occur, take place

Sentence: Please tell me what transpired on the night of October 1.

  1. Gregarious (adj.)

Meaning: (of a person) fond of company; sociable. (सुसामाजिक)

Synonyms: hospitable, friendly, sociable

Antonyms: antisocial, introverted, reclusive

Sentence: A gregarious child who ran up to every person on the playground and wanted to be their friend.

  1. Wend (verb)

Meaning: to move from one place to another (जाना)

Synonyms: proceed, march, travel

Antonyms: halt, stay

Sentence: We wended through the narrow streets.

  1. Imperturbable (adj.)

Meaning: unable to be upset or excited; calm. (अविचलित)

Synonyms: nonchalant, calm, serene

Antonyms: perturbable, panicky, shakable

Sentence: The chef was absolutely imperturbable, even when the kitchen caught on fire.

  1. Stratagem (noun)

Meaning: a plan or scheme, especially one used to outwit an opponent or achieve an end. (युक्ति)

Synonyms: scheme, trick, tactic

Sentence: Trade discounts may be used as a competitive stratagem to secure customer loyalty.

  1. Admonish (verb)

Meaning: to criticize (someone) usually gently so as to correct a fault (डांटना)

Synonyms: reprimand, scold, criticize

Antonyms: endorse, applaud, praise

Sentence: She admonished me for appearing at breakfast unshaven.

  1. Permeate (verb)

Meaning: spread throughout (something) (फैलाना)

Synonyms: suffuse, pervade, spread through

Sentence: Water will easily permeate through the sand.

  1. Garble (verb)

Meaning: to change so much as to create a wrong impression or alter the meaning of (बिगाड़ना)

Synonyms: distort, misrepresent, mix up

Antonyms: explain, interpret, clarify

Sentence: The papers had some garbled version of the story.

  1. Derelict (adj.)

Meaning: failing to give proper care and attention (बेपरवाह)

Synonyms: neglectful, careless, reckless

Antonyms: careful, conscientious, attentive

Sentence: The guards were judged derelict in their duty.

  1. Conjectural (adj.)

Meaning: based on or involving conjecture. (मान लिया)

Synonyms: speculative, suppositional, theoretical

Antonyms: actual, factual, real

Sentence: Much of the racial history of Madagascar remains conjectural.
