‘Vocabulary’
- Concise (adj.)
Meaning: marked by the use of few words to convey much information or meaning (संक्षिप्त)
Synonyms: summary, brief, succinct
Antonyms: wordy, verbose, prolix
Sentence: A concise article on violence in the media that manages to say more than most books on the subject
- Dexterous (adj.)
Meaning: skillful with the hands (निपुण)
Synonyms: handy, skilled, clever
Antonyms: clumsy, wooden, unhandy
Sentence: As people grow older, they generally become less dexterous.
- Diurnal (adj.)
Meaning: Occurring, done, produced, or appearing every day (प्रतिदिन)
Synonyms: daily; everyday, day-to-day
Antonyms: monthly, weekly, yearly
Sentence: A collection of diurnals containing essays by preeminent 19th-century American writers and thinkers
- Vituperate (verb)
Meaning: to criticize harshly and usually publicly (निंदा करना)
Synonyms: criticize, insult, abuse
Antonyms: commend, praise, compliment
Sentence: Every week the minister would ascend the pulpit and vituperate the parishioners for a litany of vices
- Turpitude (noun)
Meaning: a sinking to a state of low moral standards and behavior (अधमता)
Synonyms: degradation, corruptness, corruption
Antonyms: virtue, morality, goodness
Sentence: It kept them from moral turpitude.
- Truculent (adj.)
Meaning: feeling or displaying an eagerness to fight (लड़ाकू)
Synonyms: aggressive, militant, hostile
Antonyms: peaceable, Peaceful, nonaggressive
Sentence: Die-hard fans who became truculent and violent after their team’s loss
- Maudlin (adj.)
Meaning: appealing to the emotions in an obvious and tiresome way (भावुक)
Synonyms: sentimental, sloppy, sticky
Antonyms: unsentimental, cynical, unvarnished
Sentence: He gets very maudlin after a few drinks.
- Illusory (adj.)
Meaning: formal based on something that is not true or real (भ्रामक)
Synonyms: imaginary, unreal, ideal
Antonyms: true, genuine, authentic
Sentence: First impressions can often prove illusory.
- Derisive (adj.)
Meaning: so foolish or pointless as to be worthy of scornful laughter (व्यंग्यात्मक)
Synonyms: ridiculous, absurd, silly
Antonyms: serious, solemn, earnest
Sentence: The minister’s speech drew loud snorts of derisive laughter.
- Candor (noun)
Meaning: the free expression of one’s true feelings and opinions (स्पष्टवादिता)
Synonyms: honesty, sincerity, frankness
Antonyms: indirection, dissimulation, dissembling
Sentence: An interview in which the members of the rock band speak with candor about their recent squabbling.
