‘Vocabulary’
- Slate (verb)
Meaning: to put (someone or something) on a list (स्लेट)
Synonyms: list, record, enter
Antonyms: praise, commend, applaud
Sentence: Only a skilled workman can split the slate into layers.
- Distend (verb)
Meaning: to make or become larger especially because of pressure from inside (फुलाना)
Synonyms: expand, swell, increase
Antonyms: shorten, curtail, abridge
Sentence: The illness can cause the stomach to distend.
- Subtler (adj.)
Meaning: clever at attaining one’s ends by indirect and often deceptive means (सूक्ष्म)
Synonyms: designing, devious, scheming
Antonyms: obvious, innocent, ingenuous
Sentence: There is a further, subtler connection between liberalism and the sea.
- Pique (noun)
Meaning: the feeling of being offended or resentful after a slight or indignity (नाराजगी)
Synonyms: anger, huff, offence
Antonyms: satisfaction, delight, pleasure
Sentence: Mimi had gotten over her pique at Susan’s refusal to accept the job.
- Decimate (verb)
Meaning: to bring to a complete end the physical soundness, existence, or usefulness of (नष्ट करना)
Synonyms: destroy, devastate, ruin
Antonyms: build, construct, raise
Sentence: the project would decimate the fragile wetland wilderness
- Arraign (verb)
Meaning: call or bring (someone) before a court to answer a criminal charge. (आरोप लगाना)
Synonyms: accuse, indict, appeal
Antonyms: defend, advocate, justify
Sentence: The tramp was arraigned on a charge of stealing.
- Reckon (verb)
Meaning: to decide the size, amount, number, or distance of (something) without actual measurement (अनुमान लगाना)
Synonyms: estimate, guess, suppose
Antonyms: measure, scale, compute
Sentence: We didn’t reckon for having such bad weather.
- Respite (noun)
Meaning: a short period of rest or relief from something difficult or unpleasant. (राहत)
Synonyms: break, pause, calm
Antonyms: noise, din, unrest
Sentence: The weekend provided a nice respite from the pressures of her job.
- Obfuscation (verb)
Meaning: to make (something) unclear to the understanding (अस्पष्ट होना)
Synonyms: confuse, complicate, blur
Antonyms: clarify, simplify, illuminate
Sentence: This patronizing obfuscation was never very convincing.
- Ravenous (adj.)
Meaning: having a huge appetite (हिंसक)
Synonyms: hungry, voracious, starving
Antonyms: satisfied, full, content
Sentence: The ravenous lions tore at the carcass.
