 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Fabrication (noun)

Meaning: A statement known by its maker to be untrue and made in order to deceive. (मनगढ़ंत)

Synonyms: fairy tale, falsehood, prevarication

Antonyms: truth, fact, verification

Sentence: His story was a complete fabrication.

  1. Embellishment (noun)

Meaning: Something that decorates or beautifies. (अलंकार)

Synonyms: ornamentation, ornament, decoration

Antonyms: scar, blemish, disfigurement

Sentence: The only embellishment was a small bunch of fresh flowers placed in a vase at her feet.

  1. Hyperbole (noun)

Meaning: The representation of something in terms that go beyond the facts. (अतिशयोक्ति)

Synonyms: exaggeration, caricature, overstatement

Antonyms: understatement, belittlement, disparagement

Sentence: He’s not usually given to hyperbole.

  1. Denouncing (verb)

Meaning: To express one’s unfavorable opinion of the worth or quality of. (निंदा करना)

Synonyms: criticizing, blaming, condemning

Antonyms: praising, extolling, approving

Sentence: The church council denounced the bishop’s teachings, officially declaring them to be heresy.

  1. Caricature (noun)

Meaning: A poor, insincere, or insulting imitation of something. (व्यंग्यचित्र)

Synonyms: parody, joke, sham

Antonyms: tribute, homage

Sentence: She drew a wickedly funny caricature of the teacher.

  1. Dodging (verb)

Meaning: The act or a means of getting or keeping away from something undesirable. (बचना)

Synonyms: escape, evasion, avoidance

Antonyms: submission, endurance, toleration

Sentence: The governor’s repeated dodging of tough questions at the press conference.

  1. Apathy (noun)

Meaning: A lack of emotion or emotional expressiveness. (उदासीनता)

Synonyms: numbness, impassivity, impassiveness

Antonyms: emotion, feeling, sympathy

Sentence: The apathy of the people of that war-torn country comes from their having seen too many horrors.

  1. Woebegone (adj.)

Meaning: Feeling unhappiness. (दुखी)

Synonyms: sad, unhappy, depressed

Antonyms: cheerful, joyous, joyful

Sentence: She sniffed and looked woebegone.

  1. Elaboration (noun)

Meaning: The act or process of going from the simple or basic to the complex or advanced. (विस्तार)

Synonyms: evolution, development, progress

Antonyms: regression, reversion, retrogression

Sentence: His work led to the elaboration of a theory of evolution.

  1. Obscuring (verb)

Meaning: to keep secret or shut off from view. (अस्पष्ट)

Synonyms: concealing, hiding, covering

Antonyms: showing, revealing, exposing

Sentence: The investigative reporters obscured their real motives for visiting the company by pretending the story was about something else.
