 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Famished (adj.)

Meaning: Feeling a desire or need for food. (भूखा)

Synonyms: hungry, starving, starved

Antonyms: satisfied, sated, satiated

Sentence: I was famished, having had no food or sleep for thirty hours.

  1. Discerning (adj.)

Meaning: Having or showing deep understanding and intelligent application of knowledge. (समझदार)

Synonyms: wise, prudent, insightful

Antonyms: unwise, dense, obtuse

Sentence: She is a very discerning art critic.

  1. Deviance (noun)

Meaning: The fact or state of departing from usual or accepted standards, especially in social or sexual behavior. (विचलन)

Synonyms: divergence, discrepancy, disparity

Antonyms: community, similarity, identity

Sentence: Normal is the average of deviance.

  1. Stub (noun)

Meaning: An unused or unwanted piece or item typically of small size or value. (ठूंठ)

Synonyms: remainder, scrap, remnant

Sentence: I can’t write with this pencil stub.

  1. Coalesce (verb)

Meaning: To come together to form a single unit. (एकत्रित होना)

Synonyms: combine, unite, connect

Antonyms: split, separate, section

Sentence: Cities, if unrestricted, tend to coalesce into bigger and bigger conurbations.

  1. Cleave (verb)

Meaning: To hold to something firmly as if by adhesion. (चिपकना)

Synonyms: adhere, cling, stick

Antonyms: fall, loosen, drop

Sentence: Rose’s mouth was dry, her tongue cleaving to the roof of her mouth

  1. Stagnation (noun)

Meaning: A lack of activity or development and especially economic development. (स्थिरता)

Synonyms: recession, slump, depression

Antonyms: development, growth, progress

Sentence: After years of economic stagnation, employment numbers began to rise.

  1. Lassitude (noun)

Meaning: A complete depletion of energy or strength. (थकान)

Synonyms: exhaustion, fatigue, weariness

Antonyms: vigor, refreshment, energy

Sentence: Symptoms of anaemia include general fatigue and lassitude.

  1. Asthenia (noun)

Meaning:  The quality or state of lacking physical strength or vigor. (शक्तिहीनता)

Synonyms: weakness, fatigue, exhaustion

Antonyms: strength, vigor, hardiness

Sentence: Headache, nausea, fever, and asthenia are side effects of the drug.

  1. Felony (noun)

Meaning: A serious criminal act (such as murder or rape). (घोर अपराध)

Synonyms: crime, trespass, misdemeanor

Antonyms: innocence, noncrime, virtue

Sentence: The crime is considered a felony under state law.
