World celebrates ‘World Water Day’ on 22nd March every year to spread awareness about water for life. 22nd March has been celebrated as World Water Day” every year since 1993 which highlights the importance of freshwater.

According to the United Nations (UN), ‘World Water Day’ celebration emphasizes water and its significance in the world. It is intended to raise awareness about 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water. United Nations said that this day is about taking action to tackle the global water crisis.

Sustainable Development Goal:

One of the main purposes to celebrate World Water Day is to endorse the achievement of ‘Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.’

PM Modi on World Water Day:

The government of India has ensured water conservation and access to clean drinking water in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of World Water Day.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also tweeted on the occasion “On World Water Day, let’s reaffirm our pledge to save every drop of water. Our nation is undertaking numerous measures like Jal Jeevan Mission to ensure water conservation and access to clean drinking water for our citizens.”

History of World Water Day:

World decided to celebrate such kind of a day went up in 1992 at the UN Conference on Environment and Development took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution and declared to celebrate March 22 as ‘World Day for Water’.

Theme of World Water Day 2022:

This year more emphasizes given to ground water thus theme for the year 2022 is “Groundwater making the invisible visible”.

Importance of the day:

According to the UN survey, one in three people is living without safe drinking water even today’s world. Around 5.7 billion people may be living in areas where water is scarce for at least one month a year by 2050.

On the World Water Day attention must be given to reaffirm the measures for water and sanitation which are important to reducing poverty, achieving environmental sustainability and economic growth.
