26 July: Kargil Vijay Diwas

India celebrates Kargil Vijay Diwas on 26^th July every year to commemorate India’s victory over Pakistan in the Kargil War in 1999. The day honours the bravery and sacrifice made by Indian soldiers during the intense war.

Kargil Vijay diwas is the celebration of success in operation against Pakistan named Operation Vijay.

India is celebrating 24th anniversary of the Kargil War today (i.e. 26^th July 2023). India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted India via social platforms and remembers the brave soldiers who gave their life to the nation.

Operation Vijay:

• The armed conflict between India and Pakistan had been started due to crossing the Line of Control by the Pakistani soldiers. The Pakistani soldiers were entered Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir.
• To combat this situation and forced the Pakistani soldiers back to their border, India started ‘Operation Vijay’.
• This operation was being continued from May to July 1999.

Significance of the day:

• 21 years ago from now, the Indian Army took back all the Indian posts in Kargil which were occupied by Pakistan’s army.
• Since then, July 26 has been observed annually to commemorate the sacrifices made by soldiers in this war.
• Captain Vikram Batra, Lt Manoj Kumar Pandey, Major Rajesh Singh Adhikari, Major Vivek Gupta and others were among the 527 brave soldiers who gave their lives for the country.
• The main ceremony of Kargil Diwas is observed at the Kargil war Memorial in Drass.

Ceremony of 2023:

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reached to Drass in the Kargil district of Ladakh where he laid a garland at the War Memorial in memory of the soldiers who died in Kargil.

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Anil Chauhan, has also laid a garland at the Kargil War Memorial with many other officers and tribute to the fallen soldiers in the Kargil conflict.
