India’s Independence Day is celebrated on August 15th every year, commemorating the country’s freedom from British colonial rule on August 15, 1947. Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the Indian national flag at the Red Fort in Delhi on August 15, 1947, marking the country’s independence.
Since then, August 15th has been celebrated as India’s Independence Day with parades, flag-hoisting ceremonies, and cultural events across the country.
History
European traders had established outposts in the Indian subcontinent by the 17th century. Through overwhelming military strength, the British East India company subdued local kingdoms and established themselves as the dominant force by the 18th century.
