 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Yammer (noun)

Meaning: to express dissatisfaction, pain, or resentment usually tiresomely (परेशान)

Synonyms: complain, scream, whine

Antonyms: rejoice, delight, tolerate

Sentence: Customers yammered on for what seemed like days about the billing mistake.

  1. Palpitate (verb)

Meaning: to expands and contract in a rhythmic manner (धड़कना)

Synonyms: throb, beat, vibrate

Sentence: The man’s heart began to palpitate, and he feared another attack was coming on.

  1. Malinger (verb)

Meaning: to pretend to be sick or injured to avoid doing work (बीमारी का बहाना करना)

Synonyms: lazy, idle, fake

Antonyms: slave, toil, work

Sentence: And is he really ill or just malingering?

  1. Pernicious (adj.)

Meaning: causing or capable of causing harm (हानिकारक)

Synonyms: harmful, dangerous, detrimental

Antonyms: benign, harmless, beneficial

Sentence: The pernicious effects of illegal narcotics on society.

  1. Sobriety (noun)

Meaning: a mental state free of jesting or trifling (संयम)

Synonyms: intentness, earnestness, soberness

Antonyms: frivolity, levity, lightness

Sentence: She was a model of sobriety and honesty.

  1. Angst (noun)

Meaning: a strong feeling of being worried or nervous (गुस्से)

Synonyms: tension, fearfulness, anger

Antonyms: contentment, content, peace

Sentence: A film about teenage angst.

  1. Gingerly (adj.)

Meaning: in a careful or cautious manner. (सावधानी से)

Synonyms: carefully, formally, methodically

Antonyms: randomly, irregularly, haphazardly

Sentence: Gingerly he opened the door of the rat’s cage.

  1. Salient (adj.)

Meaning: formal standing out because of prominence or importance (मुख्य)

Synonyms: outstanding, important, major

Antonyms: unimportant, insignificant, hidden

Sentence: The salient features of the product are detailed in the press release.

  1. Confiscate (verb)

Meaning: to take ownership or control of (something) by right of one’s authority (ज़ब्त करना)

Synonyms: seize, attach, expropriate

Antonyms: render, yield, deliver

Sentence: Anything that might be used as a weapon will be confiscated by the security guards.

  1. Cogent (adj.)

Meaning: having the power to persuade (ठोस)

Synonyms: compelling, convincing, conclusive

Antonyms: unconvincing, ineffective, inconclusive

Sentence: The results of the DNA fingerprinting were the most cogent evidence for acquittal.
