8th August 1942: Quit India Movement

India observes Quit India Movement or Bharat Chhodo Andolan on 8th August every year as the Quit India Movement was decided to implement during the All India Congress Committee on 8th August 1942 in Mumbai.

The chairman of the All India Congress Committee was Mahatma Gandhi at that time and together decided to start the movement at the Bombay Session of the conference.

Slogan of Quit India Movement:

Mahatma Gandhi gave the people of India “Do or Die” slogan of phrase for the Quit India Movement.

The movement was ended in 1944 but it played a very important role in our fight for independence.

History and Importance:

  • After the defeat of the Cripps Mission, the resolution of the Quit India Movement was approved at the Mumbai session.
  • The Bharat Chhodo Andolan or Quit India Movement signalled the beginning of a non-violent mass movement for independence against the British Raj.
  • During the movement, many Congress leaders had been detained. Even detained leaders were also put behind bars in different locations across the country.
  • Due to imprisonment of the many leaders the movement was ended.
  • The reasons behind Quit India Movement failure are lack of leadership, repression by the British government, and an improper action plan.

Some facts about Quit India Movement:

  • The term Quit India had been coined by a freedom fighter and Mumbai’s then Mayor Yusuf Meher Ali.
  • During the movement, parallel governments were established in Ballia (Uttar Pradesh), Satara (Maharashtra), Tamluk (West Bengal), and Talcher (Odisha).
  • The protesters raged governmental structures, destroyed railroad tracks, and attacked postal and telegraph services.
  • Even though the Quit India Movement was decided before to be non-violent but there were several violent incidents recorded all across the nation.
  • By the end of 1942, there were approximately 60,000 prisoners and hundreds died.
