Cyclone Mocha

The India Meteorological Department officially alerted that ‘Cyclone Mocha’ is escalated into a very severe cyclonic storm over the southeast and adjoining areas of central Bay of Bengal.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed eight teams and 200 rescuers in West Bengal to deal with any exigencies. The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is standing by with its units in the region on high alert.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is closely monitoring the cyclonic storm which is gradually escalating into a severe cyclone.

It has been expected that landfall along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border might be arrived with winds of up to 150-160 km per hour.

Guidelines by authorities:

The pertaining authorities have asked fishermen and travelers not to go into central and northeast Bay of Bengal and north Andaman Sea.

It has also been advised to contact emergency operation centers which are working round the clock to handle any natural calamities.

Alert has been sent to some northeastern states, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and some weather system.

Anticipated affects in Indian states:

Tripura and Mizoram might experience heavy showers tomorrow onwards.

Nagaland, Manipur and south Assam could also witness rain at isolated places.

How was Cyclone Mocha named?

The name ‘Mocha’, pronounced as Mokha, has been suggested by Yemen. The cyclone has been given name on the Red Sea port city which is known for its coffee production.

Mocha is the name of the popular beverage, café Mocha.

Why are cyclones named?

The scientific community, media, disaster managers, and people can identify the cyclone by its name, it is the most important benefit of name a cyclone.

It creates awareness about its development and all the information given by local authority.

It stops the confusion to another tropical cyclone if it is developed in the region, and rapidly and effectively disperses warnings to a wider audience.
