Introduction:

The Michaung Cyclone, a formidable force of nature, constituted in Bay of Bengal, is about to leave its indelible mark on the regions of TamilNadu and Andhra Pradesh. This meteorological phenomenon, also known as tropical cyclone, struck with devastating power, impacting communities and ecosystems in its path.

The Michaung Cyclone originated in the warm waters of the Bay of Bengal, gaining strength from the ocean’s heat. As it intensified on 3rd December 2023, the cyclone entered the southeast regions of Chennai.

The ‘Michaung’ Name:

The Michaung name of the cyclone is given upon the suggestion of India’s neighboring country Myanmar. After the suggestion of Myanmar,the cyclone has been approved by the name Michaung.

The meaning of Michuang is strength and resilience.

Affected Areas:

It entered West central Bay of Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh and the shores of northern part of TamilNadu. According to the India Meteorological Department it gained strength and speed of wind sustained 90 to 110 kmph.

In the aftermath of the cyclone Michaung, Chennai is witnessing heavy rainfall across the city. According to the India Meteorological Department the rainfall can become more intense till 5th December in several parts of Tamil Nadu including Chengalpet and other areas.

The major Indian states and Union Territories which are most vulnerable areas for the cyclon Michuang are TamilNadu,  Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry, Odisha, West Bengal.

Government’s Efforts:

Due to heavy rainfall in Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry and Chennai, states decided to shut down educational institutes, Scholls, and colleges to counter less harm. The government of TamilNadu is also taking suggestions from private companies and offices to not call employees for a few days and take a chance for work from home until the effect of Michuang cyclone has vanished.

Because of the heavy rainfall the water logging problem has occurred in the city. The Chennai government is trying its best to pump excess water into some areas.

The Chennai government also canceled 6 trains originating from Chennai central railway station due to cyclone Michaung. According to the CM of TamilNadu, 685 people from the most vulnerable part of the state are safe in the relief camps.

There are also the arrangements of 121 multipurpose centers and 4967 relief camps in the state. TamilNadu disaster response force has deployed 14 teams across the state while National disaster response force has deployed 21 teams of personnel in TamilNadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry.

The Michaung Cyclone serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable and destructive forces of nature. As the government is working to mitigate the large effects of the Michaung Cyclone, efforts from people and communities are also needed.
