The World has celebrated the World No Tobacco Day 2024 on 31st May 2024. One event was also organized by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India to observe the World No Tobacco Day 2024.
India is also the first country to regulate anti Tobacco warnings on OTT media platforms.
Theme:
The theme for World No Tobacco Day 2024 was Protecting Children from Tobacco Industry Interference.
Key focus areas:
Shri Apurva Chandra addressed the event and highlighted the key focus areas of Tobacco control initiatives. These areas are as follow:
- Enforcement of India’s National Tobacco Control Law – COTPA 2003
- Encourage the public awareness campaigns
- Increasing tobacco-free educational institutions
- Establishing tobacco-free villages nationwide
Brand Ambassador For Tobacco control:
Indian badminton maestro Ms. PV Sindhu was selected as the brand ambassador for Tobacco control in India.
WHO World No Tobacco Day 2024 Award :
The State Tobacco Control Cell, Odisha was conferred with the WHO WNTD award 2024 and Dr. Mir Mushtaq Ahmad, Nodal Officer Kashmir, National Tobacco Control Program and the Generation Saviour Association, Punjab was also conferred with the Regional Director’s Special Recognition Award for 2024.
Significance:
The World No Tobacco Day promotes the implementation of effective tobacco control policies, such as higher taxes on tobacco products, bans on advertising, and smoke-free public spaces. These measures are proven to reduce tobacco use and protect public health.
The day encourages current tobacco users to quit and provides resources and support to help them. This includes information on cessation programs, quitlines, and other tools to aid in the process of quitting tobacco.
