The Election Commission has announced the schedule for assembly elections in five states named Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur. As per the schedule the first polls will be started in Uttar Pradesh which will be completed in seven phases.

While addressing a press conference, Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra, announced that the voting in UP will take place in seven phases starting from February 10, voting in Manipur will take place in two phases starting from February 27, while Punjab, Uttarakhand and Goa elections will be conducted in a single phase on February 14. Results of all the assembly polls will be announced on March 10.

The model code of conduct, which is a set of guidelines issued by the poll body for conduct of political parties and candidates during elections mainly with respect to speeches, polling day, polling booths, portfolios, election manifestos, processions and general conduct, also comes into effect from today following this announcement.

Uttar Pradesh (403 seats, 7 phases)
Dates of voting: February 10, February 14, February 20, February 23, February 27, March 3, March 7
Date of counting: March 10, 2022

Punjab (117 seats, 1 phase)
Dates of polling: February 14
Date of counting: March 10, 2022

Uttarakhand (70 seats, 1 phase)
Dates of polling: February 14
Date of counting: March 10, 2022

Goa (40 seats, 1 phase)
Dates of polling: February 14
Date of counting: March 10, 2022

Manipur (60 seats, 2 phases)
Dates of polling: February 27, March 3
Date of counting: March 10, 2022

Mains objectives of the commission:

The commission is going to conduct assembly elections 2022 on mainly three objectives: (a) Covid-safe elections, (b) peaceful and transparent polls and (c) maximum voter participation.

As the new covid variant Omicron is spreading speedily in world as well as India, Election Commission will released strict guidelines.

Election Commission has already termed the situation as “very dynamic”. All government officials on poll duty would be fully vaccinated. The election officers will be considered as frontline workers and will be given booster doses also. Chief Secretaries of the poll-bound states have been guided to accelerate the vaccination to ensure lesser number of spread during the election process.
