Center notified Citizenship Amendment Act 2024 before the general election

The Home Ministry has recently notified the rules for the Citizenship Amendment Act, one of the ambitious and important components of the ruling government’s manifesto in 2019 and that had been passed by the Parliament in the very same year 2019. These rules came as the Citizenship Amendment Act 2024. According to these rules, all the eligible people as per the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019, now can apply for Indian Citizenship.

What is the Citizenship Amendment Act?

In 2019, the Bharatiya Janata Party had introduced a new bill in the Parliament called Citizenship Amendment Act 2019. The bill had been passed by the Parliament in 2019 itself. The Citizenship Amendment Act provides the way for getting Indian Citizenship to the non-Muslim migrants including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians.

These persecuted migrants have come from neighboring countries such as Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan and arrived in India. All the eligible non Muslim migrants who have arrived India before 31st December 2014 are eligible to be awarded Indian Citizenship under the  Citizenship Amendment Act.

Objectives of the Citizenship Amendment Act:

One of the important features of the Citizenship Amendment Act is that it is not applicable to Indian citizens. The main objective of the Citizenship Amendment Act is to provide Indian citizens to migrant people who have been forced to leave their homes on the ground of religion.

The Citizenship Amendment Act provides help to those migrant non muslim people who have been persecuted in their own country in the name of religion and forced to find shelter in India.

Important points:

• The area covered by the Inner Line Permit system and the regions coming under the sixth schedule of the constitution are not included under the Citizenship Amendment Act to safeguard the interest for the betterment of indigenous tribes and communities in the northeastern states.
• Due to the various protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019, it couldn’t be implemented then as rules for it hadn’t been notified yet.
• Now as the Citizenship Amendment Act 2024 has been notified, the Indian government will provide Indian Citizenship to migrant minorities from three neighboring countries such as Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
• The new Amendment also reduced the residence requirements for these migrants from eleven years to five years.
• The Citizenship Amendment Act also doesn’t have any provisions for Rohingya Muslim refugees from neighboring Myanmar.
• Under the Citizenship Amendment Act 2024, an eligibility certificate will also be provided by the locally reputed community institutions to provide them the right to continue to be a member of that specific community.
• According to the rules, a passport will not be mandatorily required for the application.
• Eligible people can submit the application through online mode.

Conclusion:

Although opposition is not fully satisfied with the Citizenship Amendment Act, this still has significant importance. This bill can become an important tool to provide Indian Citizenship to those persecuted non-muslim migrants who have been facing many difficulties. The center made sure that the Citizenship Amendment Act 2024 doesn’t affect the Indian citizens. Now it’s interesting to see the aftereffects of the Citizenship Amendment Act 2024.
