Alikhan Smailov appointed as Kazakhstan’s new Prime Minister

  • Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev nominated Alikhan Smailov as the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan and the lower house of parliament also voted in favour of him during a session that broadcasted live on state television.
  • Alikhan Smailov was appointed as the acting Prime Minister on 5 January 2022 following the resignation of the Askar Mamin Cabinet during the ongoing violent 2022 Kazakh protests.
  • Alikhan Smailov has served as First Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan in 2019.

  • Henley Passport Index 2022 was recently released recently. As per the Index, in first quarter of 2022, India has improved its passport power. India has climbed seven places up and has been ranked at 83rd position.
  • In 2021, it was ranked at 90th position. Now, India has access to 60 countries without a prior visa.
  • Japan and Singapore have been ranked 1st, with passport holders have accessibility of 192 destinations visa-free. Afghanistan has been listed at the bottom of this index.

GoI will hold 35.8% stakes of Vodafone Idea in the form of equity

  • Govt of India is set to become the largest shareholder in Vodafone Idea. The company’s board approved the conversion of Rs 16,000 crores in interest into equity. 
  • India’s third-largest network Vi or Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL) has approved the interest on the spectrum and Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues into government equity.
  • VIL accepted a four-year moratorium as well as accepted the equity conversion, which means the Indian government will own almost 35.8% of VIL’s stake followed by Vodafone Group which owns 28.5% and 17.8% by Aditya Birla Group.

  • World bank’s Global Economic Prospects’ Report notes that, Global economic growth will decrease sharply to 4.1% in 2022 and 3.2% in 2023, from 5.5% in 2021.
  • It projected India’s annual growth to be 8.3% in the fiscal year 2021-2022, 8.7% in 2022-23, while 6.8% in 2023-24.
  • As per advance estimates from statistics office, India’s economy is likely to grow by 9.2% in the financial year 2021-22.

Axis Bank issued 1st letter of credit on Govt-backed Platform Secured Logistics Document Exchange

  • Axis Bank issued industry’s 1st letter of credit (LC) on the Secured Logistics Document Exchange (SLDE), a government-backed blockchain-enabled platform.
  • The deal, which was executed digitally on the SLDE platform, involved ArcelorMittal Nippon and Lalit Pipes & Pipes Limited (LPPL) (Axis bank’s client). The bank released an LC on behalf of LPPL.
  • SLDE was launched by the commerce ministry in July 2021 to replace the manual process of generation, exchange and compliance of logistics documents (which takes around 2 weeks of time) with a digitised and secure document exchange system.

Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas appointed as Chief Economist of IMF

  • French-born economist Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas has been named as the next chief economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
  • He will succeed Gita Gopinath, first woman to serve as the Fund’s chief economist. Gita Gopinath will take over as 1st deputy managing director of IMF from January 21 2022.
  • He will initially join the IMF on a part-time basis from Jan 24, 2022 and will take up on role on a full-time basis from April 1, 2022.

DRDO successfully test-fired naval variant of BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from INS Visakhapatnam 

  • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully test-fired an extended range sea-to-sea variant of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from INS Visakhapatnam, a stealth guided-missile destroyer of the Indian Navy.
  • BrahMos Aerospace, an India-Russian joint venture, produces supersonic cruise missiles that can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft, or land platforms.
  • The missile can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft, or land platforms. BrahMos missile flies at a speed of 2.8 Mach or almost three times the speed of sound.

Karnataka will host Khelo India Games in 2023
