Google launched Play Points in India

  • Google has launched its global rewards programme named ‘Play Points’ in India.
  • Objective -To allow users to earn points and rewards for using Google Play Store billing for in-app purchases, subscriptions and buying apps, games, movies, and ebooks.
  • The rewards programme is divided into four categories– bronze, silver, gold and platinum– based on the points earned by users. The rewards will vary in each category.
  • This programme is fully funded by Google. It will only be available on the use of Google Play billing and will not be applicable on third party billing.
  • This programme was first launched in 2018 and available in 28 other countries.

Government approved India’s 1st suspension bridge across Krishna river

  • The central government has approved the construction of an iconic cable stayed-cum-suspension bridge across the Krishna River connecting Telangana & Andhra Pradesh.
  • The Somasila-Siddeswaram bridge will cut short the distance and significantly reduce the travel time between Telangana state and Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh.
  • The bridge is expected to cut the distance between Hyderabad and Tirupati by 80 km. currently, the distance between the two cities is 580 km.
  • The iconic cable-stayed cum suspension bridge across Krishna river in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana has been approved at a total cost of Rs 1082.56 crore with the construction period of 30 months.
  • Once completed, the bridge would be 2nd of its kind in the world and 1st in India.
  • People on both sides of the Krishna River have long been demanding construction of the bridge. It picked up momentum after 61 people died in a boat capsize in the river on January 19, 2007. The tragedy occurred near Nehru Nagar in Kurnool district when they were on their way to take part in Singotam Jatara in Kollapur.

Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio launched universal health insurance scheme

  • Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has launched a universal health insurance scheme.
  • Objective- to alleviate financial hardships of people due to hospitalization expenses and prevent inaccessibility to healthcare on account of inability to afford it,
  • All government hospitals in the state will also be empanelled to provide in-patient treatment under the scheme, and the revenue earned from the scheme can be used by the hospitals for improving the delivery of health services in their respective facilities.

Haryana topped the Public Affairs Index 2022

  • Haryana has been ranked the best-governed state in the Public Affairs Index Report 2022 prepared by the Bengaluru-based think tank Public Affairs Center (PAC).

Wildlife populations declined 69% since 1970: WWF report

  • Wildlife populations monitored across the globe have declined by a massive 69% between 1970 & 2018, according to the World Wildlife Fund’s (WWF) Living Planet Report 2022.
  • Wildlife populations have dipped by 66% in Africa & 55% in the Asia Pacific. Freshwater populations have declined by 83%.
  • The IUCN Red List shows cycads are the most threatened species, while corals are declining the fastest, followed by amphibians.
  • The main drivers of wildlife population decline are habitat degradation and loss, exploitation, introduction of invasive species, pollution, climate change and disease.

Global Hunger Index 2022; India ranked 107th out of 121 countries

  • India has been ranked 107th out of 121 countries in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2022.
  • With an overall score of 29.1 (see table below to understand the measurement), the level of hunger in India has been categorized as “serious”.
  • India was ranked 101st out of 116 countries in the GHI 2021 and 94th out of 107 assessed countries in 2020.
  • India has fared poorer than its neighbours Pakistan (99th), Nepal (81st) and Bangladesh (84th).
  • Pakistan (26.1), Nepal (19.1), Bangladesh (19.6), and Sri Lanka (13.6) have secured a relatively better rank than India.
  • The GHI that tracks and measures hunger across the world says that malnutrition among children under five years in India is very high.
  • With 35.5 percent of children below five years stunted (low height for age), India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan are among the worst-performing countries.
  • India is off-track regarding the progress needed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal of “Zero Hunger” (Goal 2) by 2030.

15 October – World Students’ Day

  • October 15 is celebrated as World Students’ Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, a celebrated Aerospace scientist and former President of India (2002-07).

  • Kalam was born on October 15, 1931. He served as an inspiration to many students to achieve and do something remarkable.
  • On July 2015, he was delivering a lecture at the IIM Shillong, when he collapsed due to cardiac arrest and died at the age of 83.
  • Kalam is fondly remembered as “People’s President”, and he was known for his dedication towards promoting education.
  • He was honoured with several recognitions including Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan (1990), Bharat Ratna (1997), and Ramanujan Award.
