India’s largest open air fernery opened in Uttarakhand

  • India’s largest open-air fernery has been inaugurated in Ranikhet of Uttarakhand. The new centre will serve the dual objective of ‘conservation of fern species as well as ‘create awareness about their ecological role and promote further research.
  • The fernery is home to a large number of fern species, some of which are endemic to the state, some hold medicinal value while some are threatened species that demand care and conservation.

Chhattisgarh launches ‘Millet Mission’

  • Chhattisgarh government launched the “Millet Mission” on September 14, 2021 with the objective of making the state a millet hub of India. On the occasion of launch of the mission, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel noted that state will soon become the millet hub of India.
  • Aims: Millet Mission initiative was launched with the aim of giving the farmers right price for small cereal crops and to provide them input assistance, procurement arrangements and processing. This mission also seeks to ensure that the farmers get benefit from the expertise of experts.

IIT-Bombay launches ‘Project Udaan’

IIT-Bombay launches ‘Project Udaan’

  • IIT-Bombay launched its “Project Udaan” on the occasion of Hindi Diwas on September 14, 2021. Project Udaan was launched with the aim of breaking the language barrier that many students face while joining the institutes of higher education.
  • Project Udaan enables the translation of textbooks and other study material of the engineering and other streams from English to Hindi & other Indian Languages. It helps in translating engineering textbooks and learning materials in one-sixth the time as compared to manual tasking. This machine translation will be aided by human effort.
  • Democracy is as much a process as a goal, and only with the full participation of the international community, can the ideal of democracy be made into a reality.”

Pawan Goenka appointed chairperson of In-SPACe

  • Former managing director of Mahindra & Mahindra Pawan Kumar Goenka has been appointed as the chairperson of the Indian National Space Promotion Authorization Centre (In-SPACe). During his R&D tenure in M&M, he led the development of the Scorpio SUV.
  • IN-SPACe functions as an independent nodal agency under the Department of Space, Government of India.

Super 30 founder Anand Kumar conferred with Swami Brahmanand Award 2021

  • Mathematician Anand Kumar was conferred with the Swami Brahmanand Award 2021 for his contribution in the field of education through his ‘Super 30’ initiative, which prepares underprivileged students for the IIT entrance exam.
  • Super 30′ is a coaching programme of Kumar’s Patna-based Ramanujan School of Mathematics. It has been instituted in the name of Swami Brahmananda, a freedom fighter, former MP and a saint known for his sacrifices and his contribution in the field of education.

Lanka fast bowler Malinga announces retirement from all forms of cricket

  • Sri Lanka pace veteran Lasith Malinga, who terrorised the world’s best batsmen with his toe-crushing yorkers delivered from a low and sling-arm action, on 14th Sept announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.
  • The 38-year-old, who was captain of Sri Lanka’s 2014 T20 World Cup winning team, posted a message on his social media account announcing his decision.He picked up 107 wickets in 84 T20 Internationals, 338 scalps in 226 ODIs and 101 wickets in 30 Tests.

Joe Root and Eimear Richardson named ICC Players of the Month for August

  • England Test skipper Joe Root and Ireland’s Eimear Richardson have been voted as the winners of the ICC Players of the Month for August 2021.
  • Root was voted the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for August for his consistent performances in the Test series against India that was part of the next cycle of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC).

15 September: Engineer’s Day (India)

  • Engineers Day 2021 would be celebrated on September 15, across the country to mark the birthday of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. His contributions to the field of engineering and education are significant. Since 1968, India has celebrated Engineers day on this day every year.
  • Visvesvaraya, the man with high principles, played a crucial role in constructing dams, reservoirs and hydro-power projects in India. His high architect projects include the Krishna Raja Sagar dam in Karnataka and the flood protection system of Hyderabad.

15 September: International Day of Democracy

  • September 15 is celebrated as International Day of Democracy after being established in 2007 through a resolution passed by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). In the words of the United Nations, “International Day of Democracy provides an opportunity to review the state of democracy in the world.
  • Theme 2021: “Strengthening democratic resilience in the face of future crises”.
