National News

India to start supplying petrol with 20% ethanol from April 2023

  • India will start supplying petrol with 20% ethanol at select petrol pumps from April 2023.
  • Oil minister Hardeep Puri said a fifth of petrol will be made up of ethanol by 2025.
  • India achieved the target of supplying petrol mixed with 10 percent ethanol (10% ethanol, 90% petrol) ahead of schedule in June 2022.
  • Supply of petrol with 20 percent ethanol will result in a saving of an estimated USD 4 billion annually.
  • India is the world’s fifth largest producer of ethanol after the US, Brazil, EU, and China. Ethanol worldwide is largely used for consumption but nations like Brazil and India also dope it in petrol.

Odisha Government signed an MoU with NIOT for protecting coastline

  • The Odisha govt has signed an MoU with the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) for the protection of its coasts.
  • National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences is a premier institute in the country specializing in the field of ocean engineering and coastline protection.
  • According to the MoU, the NIOT will provide technical guidance, design, and drawing of climate resilient coastal protection measures to the state government.
  • Odisha has a vast coastline of about 480 km and the coastal areas are exposed to natural disasters. Cyclones cause high tidal surges with very high wind speed, resulting in loss of lives and properties.

India added 11 more wetlands to its list of Ramsar sites

  • India has added 11 more wetlands to the list of Ramsar sites to make total 75 Ramsar sites covering an area of 13 lakh 26 thousand 677 Hectares in the country in the 75th year of Independence.
  • Of the 11 new sites four are in Tamil Nadu, three in Odisha, two in Jammu & Kashmir, and one each in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
  • Tamil Nadu has the maximum number of Ramsar sites at 14, followed by Uttar Pradesh which has 10.
  • India is one of the Contracting Parties to Ramsar Convention, signed in Ramsar, Iran in 1971. India signed it on 1st February 1982. From 1982 to 2013, a total of 26 sites were added to the list of Ramsar sites.
  • From 2014 to 2022, the country has added 49 new wetlands to the list of Ramsar sites.

Bharat Biotech completed trials for India’s first intranasal vaccine

  • Bharat Biotech has completed clinical development for phase III trials and booster doses for BBV154 intranasal Covid vaccine.
  • The adenoviral intranasal vaccine BBV154 is the first of its kind Covid-19 vaccine to undergo human trials in India. “BBV154 has proven to be safe, well-tolerated and immunogenic in subjects in controlled clinical trials.
  • BBV154 is stable at 2-8°C for easy storage and distribution.
  • The company has established large manufacturing capabilities at multiple sites across India, including Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Telangana, with operations pan India.

J&K Government launched Village Defence Guards Scheme

  • Ministry of Home Affairs has sanctioned approval for the creation of Village Defence Guard Scheme – 2022 in Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Earlier, this scheme was known as Village Defence Committee in which volunteers from villages were trained by the Indian Army and Police.
  • Under this scheme, rifles were provided to VDC’s and they protected their villages from terrorist attacks and terror-related activities.

Assam CM launched 1,000 model Anganwadi centres

  • Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has rolled out nearly 1,000 model Anganwadi centres constructed across the state and 15,000 such units would be constructed by 2026.
  • He also launched the ‘Adopt an Anganwadi’ portal, aimed at providing philanthropists, NGOs, and citizens concerned with a platform through which they can contribute to the welfare of the society by adopting full or partial expenses of an Anganwadi centre.
  • Anganwadis are centres where the physical and mental foundations of a child are built. It prepares the child for their journey towards the higher education system.

SBI launched Utsav fixed deposit scheme

  • On the occasion of the nation’s 76th year of Independence celebrated as Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the largest lender in the nation, State Bank of India (SBI), introduced a unique term deposit programme called “Utsav Deposit.”
  • This fixed deposit scheme has higher interest rates and is only available for a limited time.
  • In the Utsav Fixed Deposit Scheme, SBI is offering an interest rate of 6.10% per annum on fixed deposits with a tenure of 1000 days. And senior citizens will be eligible to get an additional interest rate of 0.50% over and above the regular rate.
  • These rates are effective as of 15th August 2022 and the scheme is valid for a period of 75 days.

India can be USD 5 trillion economy by FY29 if GDP grows at 9% for 5 years: Former RBI Governor D Subbarao

  • India may become a USD 5 trillion economy by 2028-29 only if the GDP grows at 9 percent per annum consistently for the next five years, former RBI Governor D Subbarao
  • Speaking at the Federation of Telangana Chamber of Commerce and Industry on India @75- Marching Towards USD 5 Trillion Economy on the occasion of 75 years of Indian Independence, he said there are eight key challenges for India to overcome to achieve the dream of 5 trillion economy.
  • The challenges are increasing investment, improving productivity and education and health outcomes, creating jobs, raising agriculture productivity, maintaining macroeconomic stability, managing global megatrends and improving governance.
  • the States and union government must realize that, the country does not have surplus budgets and while some safety net is surely needed. They must be cautious and selective on what freebies to be given from borrowed money and future generations should not be burdened with unnecessary debt burden.

Government re-appointed 4 independent directors on central board of RBI

  • The central government has re-appointed Satish Kashinath Marathe, Swaminathan Gurumurthy, Revathy Iyer, and Sachin Chaturvedi as part-time non-official directors on the central board of the Reserve Bank of India for a term of four years.
  • Iyer and Chaturvedi have been re-appointed as a Member of the Northern Local Board and on the Eastern Local Board of the Reserve Bank of India.
  • In June, the government nominated Mahindra and Mahindra group Chairman Anand Mahindra, TVS Motors Chairperson Venu Srinivasan, Zydus Lifesciences’ Chairman Pankaj Patel, and Ravindra Dholakia, a former member of the Monetary Policy Committee, as part-time non-official directors on the central board of the RBI.

Government appointed 11 new High Court Judges in Punjab & Haryana

  • The Government has notified the appointments of another 11 High Court Judges in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
  • The appointments include the names Nidhi Gupta, Sanjay Vashisth, Tribhuvan Dahiya, Namit Kumar, Harkesh Manuja, Aman Chaudhary, Naresh Singh, Harsh Bunger, Jagmohan Bansal, Deepak Manchanda and Alok Jain.
  • The Punjab and Haryana High Court are currently functioning with just 46 judges against the sanctioned strength of 85 with around a dozen of the 46 judges set to retire in the next two years. With the appointment of new additional judges, the number of judges will rise to 57.
  • On 13th August 2022, the govt had appointed 26 High Court Judges in the High Courts of Allahabad, Andhra, Telangana, Gauhati, Orissa, and Himachal Pradesh.

1082 Police personnel awarded Police Medals in 2022

  • The Union ministry of home affairs (MHA) has awarded 1,082 police personnel from CAPFs and state forces with various categories of service medals, including for gallant action on the eve of Independence Day.
  • 347 personnel have been awarded for Gallantry while 87 have been awarded for Distinguished Service.
  • The maximum gallantry medals at 109 have been received by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) followed by 19 to the Border Security Force (BSF) and six each to the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
  • Among the state police forces, Jammu and Kashmir Police led by DGP Dilbagh Singh has been awarded the maximum number of medals 108 among all the states and Union Territories. As many as 42 gallantry medals have been given to Maharashtra, 15 to Chhattisgarh and the remaining from the other States/UTs and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs).

Asia’s Oldest tournament Durand Cup starts on August 16

  • The oldest football tournament in Asia, Durand Cup is scheduled to start on August 16, 2022.
  • The opening match will be played between FC Goa and Mohammedan SC at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata. The tournament will feature 20 teams all divided into four groups of five teams each.
  • For the first time in its history, the tournament is being held in multiple cities. West Bengal, Assam and Manipur are hosting the Durand Cup 2022.
  • The matches will be played in Salt Lake Stadium (Kolkata, West Bengal), Naihati Stadium (Naihati, West Bengal), Kishore Bharati Stadium (Kolkata, West Bengal), Khuman Lampak Stadium (Imphal, Manipur) and Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium (Guwahati, Assam).
  • Durand Cup is one of the three major football tournaments in India, the other two being Indian Super League and Super Cup.
  • This year the tournament is 131st edition.

  • He was born in 1872 in Kolkata and he passed away on 5 December 1950.
  • His main literary works are ‘The Life Divine’, ‘Synthesis of Yoga’, and ‘Savitri: A Legend and a Symbol

Anshu Jain former co-CEO of Deutsche Bank passed away

  • Deutsche Bank’s former India-born co-CEO Anshu Jain dies after battle with cancer
  • Anshu Jain, Deutsche Bank’s former India-born co-Chief Executive Officer, has died after a nearly five-year battle with cancer. He was 59.
  • Jain, who was born in India, spent two decades building Deutsche Bank into one of the world’s top universal banks. He was the first non-European to lead the German institution.
  • In the aftermath of the financial crisis of 2008 and the European debt crisis that followed, Jain pushed Deutsche to remain Europe’s “last man standing” as US. firms pulled ahead in global banking.
  • He resigned from the German lender in 2015 and had been the president of US financial services firm Cantor Fitzgerald since 2017.
