Odisha Cabinet approved Rs 2808.39 crore for Millets Mission

  • Odisha State Cabinet headed by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has approved Rs 2808.39 crore for the promotion of millets in the tribal areas of the state.
  • The Odisha Millets Mission was launched by Government of Odisha in 2017 to revive millets in farms and on plates. It emerged from consultation between Government, Academia (NCDS) and Civil Society Organizations (RRA Network, ASHA Network and local NGOs).
  • It is the first of its kind of agriculture programme with a priority on increasing consumption in Odisha.
  • The programme aims comprehensive revival of millets in farms and plates to promote climate resilient farming and contribute to addressing micronutrient deficiency.

Kolkata to host India International Seafood Show 2023

  • The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) in association with the Seafood Exporters Association of India (SEAI) will host the 23rd edition of India International Seafood Show in Kolkata from February 15 to 17 in 2023 after a gap of 16 years.
  • It will provide an ideal platform for interaction between Indian exporters and overseas importers of the country’s marine products.
  • India’s tremendous strides in the seafood sector will be exhibited in all its facets as the event will have over 350 stalls spread over 7,000 sqm showcasing a wide range of products based on automated and IT-aided technology and energy-efficient systems for value addition.

WPI inflation eases to 13.93 percent in July 2022

  • India’s wholesale inflation in July eased sequentially to93 percent as vegetables, milk and fuel became cheaper, but remained in double digits for the 16th month.
  • Wholesale Price Index-based (WPI) inflation was 15.18 percent last month and at a record high of 16.63 per cent in May. It was 11.57 per cent in July 2021.
  • WPI inflation rate for May 2022 was revised to a record high of 16.63 per cent year-on-year, from 15.88 per cent estimated earlier.
  • Inflation in food articles basket in July came in at 10.77 percent, meanwhile, the inflation in the manufacturing goods segment declined by 0.42 percent to 8.16 percent.
  • For the fuel and power segment, the WPI number jumped to 43.75 percent in July, from 40.38 percent in June.

IRDAI invited innovative solutions for insurance sector

  • Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) is organizing its first hackathon “Bima Manthan 2022″ with the theme ‘Innovation in Insurance’.
  • The hackathon invites participants to identify & develop solutions that have the potential to make the insurance available to every individual in a seamless and swift manner with the use of technology.

Indian Railways launched ‘Operation Yatri Suraksha’

  • Indian Railway Protection Force (RPF) has launched a pan-India operation known as Operation Yatri Suraksha.
  • Under this operation, several steps are taken to provide round-the-clock security to passengers.
  • As part of this initiative, several steps are being taken to provide foolproof security to passengers i.e., train escorting, visible presence on stations, surveillance through CCTV, surveillance on active criminals, collection of intelligence about the criminals, and action thereupon.

Defence forces, RBI & PM Office Most Trusted Institutions: survey by Ipsos India

  • Defence forces, RBI and Prime Minister of India are the three most trusted institutions in the country, according to a survey by Ipsos India.
  • The Supreme Court of India came fourth and it was followed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
  • The survey was conducted by Ipsos India and interviewed 2,950 adults including females.
  • Ranked first are the Defence Forces with at least 2 in 3 (65%) citizens reposing their faith in them, ranked second was the RBI with 1 in 2 (50%) choosing them, ranked third was the PM of India chosen by 49% of citizens polled, and rank fourth was bagged by the Supreme Court of India (47%), rank fifth occupied by the CBI (43%) and rank 6th by the Police (38%).
  • This was followed by the Parliament (33%) ranked 7th, the media ranked 8th on the list while placed 9th was the Election Commission of India (31%).

International News

UK becomes first country to approve Omicron vaccine

  • The UK has become the first country to authorize a Covid-19 vaccine for the Omicron variant.
  • The UK medicine regulator (MHRA) approved the ‘bivalent’ vaccine made by Moderna as a booster for adults.
  • The agency’s decision was based on clinical trial data that showed the booster triggered “a strong immune response” against both Omicron (BA.1) and the original 2020 virus.

SBI launched its first dedicated branch to support start-ups

  • The country’s largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) has launched its first branch dedicated to start-ups in Koramangala, Bengaluru.
  • The branch will provide services ranging from the stage of formation of start-ups to Initial Public Offerings and Follow-on Public Offerings.
  • SBI Chairman Dinesh Khara launched the branch which is located in Koramangala near HSR Layout and Indiranagar which are the biggest start-up hubs in the city.
  • After Bengaluru, the next branch will be opened in Gurgaon and third one will be in Hyderabad.
  • These branches would support the needs of the entire start-up ecosystem.

Rajkiran Rai appointed as MD of NaBFID

  • The Centre and the board of National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID) have appointed Rajkiran Rai G as its Managing Director (MD) for five years.
  • Last year in October 2021, the Centre had appointed K V Kamath as chairperson of NaBFID.
  • Subsequently, Pankaj Jain and Sumita Dawra were appointed directors to the board.

William Ruto elected as the new president of Kenya

  • Deputy President of Kenya William Ruto has been elected as the President of country.

  • With this win, he become the fifth President of Kenya since independence.
  • His party Kenya Kwanza coalition has also won a majority of seats in Senate of Kenya, the upper house of the parliament.

107 gallantry awards announced on Independence Day

  • President Droupadi Murmu has approved 107 gallantry awards to armed forces and CAPF personnel.
  • The awards include three Kirti Chakra, 13 Shaurya Chakras, two bar to Sena Medals (gallantry), 81 Sena Medals (gallantry), one Nao Sena Medal (gallantry) and seven Vayu Sena Medals (gallantry).
  • 8 Shaurya Chakras have been awarded to army personnel, including two posthumously.
  • Naik Devendra Pratap Singh has been awarded the second highest peacetime gallantry award Kirti Chakra.
  • Naik Devendra Pratap Singh was a part of an operation in Pulwama on January 29 where he killed two hardcore terrorists in a gunfight, showing exceptional bravery.
  • Sepoy Karn Veer Singh and Gunner Jasbir Singh have been awarded the Shaurya Chakra posthumously.

Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) Awards 2022 announced

  • The 13th Indian Film Festival of Melbourne began on August 12 and will conclude on Aug 30, 2022.

FIFA suspended All India Football Federation

  • FIFA has suspended the All-India Football Federation (AIFF) and banned it for the upcoming under 17 women’s world cup 2022 which was scheduled to be held and hosted by India.
  • Reason – Undue influence from third parties.
  • The suspension will be lifted once an order to set up a committee of administrators to assume the powers of the AIFF Executive Committee has been repealed.

16 August – Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s death anniversary

  • 16 August 2022 marked the 4th death anniversary of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
  • Atal Bihar Vajpayee was the former Prime Minister of India and was elected to the position twice in 1996 and 1999. He passed away in 2018.
  • Vajpayee first took charge as Prime Minister of India for a short period in 1996, followed by a second and a third term between 1998-2004.
  • He was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan in 1992.
  • He was awarded India’s highest civilian honour Bharat Ratna in 2015 on his birthday December 25. This day was also declared as Good Governance Day by the Narendra Modi government.


Former BCCI Secretary Amitabh Choudhary passed away

  • Amitabh Chaudhary the former BCCI acting secretary and president of Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) has passed away at 58.
  • He served as acting secretary of the BCCI until 2019 and he was the Indian team manager in Zimbabwe in 2005-06
  • He was a retired senior IPS officer, who rose to the rank of IGP with the Jharkhand Police and was the chairman of the Jharkhand Public Service Commission.
  • He played a crucial role in developing infrastructure for Jharkhand cricket.
