India to invest $30 billion for 4G, 5G connectivity to every village

  • The government is investing nearly $30 billion to ensure last-mile network accessibility for 4G and 5G in every village across the country and build a robust digital infrastructure in the rural areas.
  • So far, the government has reached out to over 1.5 lakh gram panchayats.
  • The govt is currently looking at 3-4 legislations cumulatively inclusive of the new telecom bill, the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, and the IT Act of 2000 to create an interactive framework.

Royal Society of Chemistry partnered with CSIR to support chemistry in schools across India

  • The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and the Council for Industry and Scientific Research (CSIR) have partnered to support an outreach programme designed to promote the chemical sciences in schools and universities.
  • About 2000 students across the country participated in RSC’s Global Coin experiment organized across over 30 CSIR laboratories.
  • The MoU will be a non-financial one and will be time-bound for at least three years with an option of renewal.
  • Both have committed to work together on the CSIR’s Jigyasa programme, an India-wide outreach programme designed to promote chemical sciences in schools and universities.

Sterling and Wilson Solar signed an MoU with Nigerian government

  • Sterling and Wilson Solar Solutions (SWSS), the US subsidiary of Sterling and Wilson Solar Limited (SWSL), has signed an MoU with the Nigerian government, along with its consortium partner Sun Africa.
  • The MoU is for the development, design, construction, and commissioning of solar PV power plants aggregating 961 MWp at five different locations in Nigeria with total installed capacity of 455 MWh.
  • These projects will ultimately be owned and operated by Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), a Nigerian Government owned entity.
  • SWRE, part of the Sterling and Wilson Group, entered the African market in 2015 with its first international project of 90 MWp in De Aar, South Africa. The company is one of the largest solar EPC players in the region with a strong portfolio of over 1 GWp spread across seven countries.

Assam to use portable device ‘SAANS’ to stop neonatal deaths

  • The Assam government has decided to use the air pressure machine developed by a Bangalore-based start-up across its hospitals.
  • ‘SAANS’ is a portable neonatal Continuous Positive Air Pressure (CPAP) system that can provide lifesaving breathing support to infants in hospital settings as well as during travel.
  • The machine was used with some babies at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital as a pilot project and demonstrated “excellent results
  • For the development of the machine, InnAccel Technologies, incubated at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms (C-CAMP), joined hands with the SAMRIDH Healthcare Blended Finance Facility to strengthen respiratory support for newborns and pediatric populations in Assam.

Mansukh Mandaviya inaugurated Arogya Manthan 2022

  • Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has inaugurated Arogya Manthan 2022 to celebrate the four years of implementation of Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri – Jan Arogya Yojana.
  • The scheme provides a health cover of five lakh rupees annually to vulnerable families and aims at benefiting more than ten crore poor families across the country.
  • It was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September 2018.
  • PM-JAY was launched on 23 Sept 2018 with the aim to provide health cover to more than 10.74 crore poor and vulnerable families of up to Rs 5 lakh per family per year.

Amit Shah to inaugurate Dairy Cooperative Conclave in Gangtok

  • Union Home Affairs and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate the Eastern and North-Eastern Zones Dairy Cooperative Conclave at Gangtok in Sikkim on 7 October 2022.
  • It will be organized by the National Cooperative Dairy Federation of India (NCDFI).
  • Theme of this conclave – Resilient Eastern and North-Eastern Zones Dairy Cooperatives – Exploring the Challenges and Opportunities
  • Officials from National Dairy Development Board, NABARD, cooperative milk unions, and state dairy federations from around 12 eastern and north-eastern states are likely to attend the conclave.

Chhattisgarh government launched ‘Hamar Beti Hamar Maan’ campaign

  • Chhattisgarh government has decided to launch a campaign on women’s safety titled ‘Hamar Beti Hamar Maan’ (our daughter, our honour)
  • Objective – To create awareness on safety measures among school- and college-going girls and prioritize registration and investigation of women-related crimes.
  • Under this campaign, the girls will be taught about various necessary subjects, including their legal rights, good touch-bad touch, and sexual crimes.
  • A helpline number will also be issued under the Hamar Beti Hamar Maan campaign.

Sikkim gets India’s first avalanche-monitoring radar

  • The Indian Army and the Defence Geoinformatics and Research Establishment (DGRE) have jointly installed the Avalanche Monitoring Radar in North Sikkim.
  • Besides being used for detection of avalanches, this radar can also be employed to detect landslides.
  • This radar has the capability to detect avalanches within three seconds of their triggering and will assist in saving the valuable life of troops and civilians as also vehicles in super high altitude areas.

Government formed 5-member committee to review pharma marketing practices

  • The central government has formed a 5-member committee led by V K Paul, member (health) of NITI Aayog, to consider a “legally enforceable” mechanism for regulating the marketing practices of pharmaceutical firms.
  • S Aparna, secretary in department of pharmaceuticals (DoP); Rajesh Bhushan, secretary in the ministry of health and family welfare (MoHFW); Nitin Gupta, chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT); and a joint secretary (policy) from the department of personnel (DoP) are the four other members of the ‘high level’ committee.
  • It will also “examine the related issues on the requirement of legally enforceable mechanisms for regulating marketing practices, including study of the practices across the globe.
  • It is expected to submit its report in 90 days.

Japan’s MUFG Bank injected Rs 3,000 crore in India biz

  • Japan’s MUFG Bank has boosted the capital of its branches within India by ₹3,000 crores, as the bank looks to expand its India business.
  • As a result of this capital injection, the total capital of MUFG Bank in India will rise to ₹5,207 crores.
  • Objective – To strengthen its financial base in India and better respond to the diverse financing needs of its clients through the funds.
  • The bank established MUFG Enterprise Solutions India Pvt. Ltd as its global capability centre that supports the technology and innovation arm for MUFG in the year 2020
  • The bank has already expanded its presence by opening a branch at Gujarat International Finance TecCity.

Dr. M Srinivas appointed as Director of AIIMS Delhi

  • The Central Government has appointed M Srinivas as the Director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi.
  • Srinivas will be succeeding Dr. Randeep Guleria, who has served as the director since March 2017.
  • M Srinivas will be serving as the director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, AIIMS Delhi for a period of five years or till he attains the age of 65.
  • Guleria, who was appointed in 2017, had his term extended twice. His term initially came to an end on March 24, 2022, but was extended for another three months – twice, due to the delay in finalizing the new director.

Dilip Tirkey elected as President of Hockey India

  • Dilip Tirkey, a former India hockey captain and member of the gold medal-winning team at the 1998 Asian Games, was unanimously elected as Hockey India president.
  • First time in history, a former sportsperson and an Olympian has been elected as the head of Hockey India.
  • Tirkey has a record 412 international matches as a defender in his career spanning more than 15 years.

Dr. Rajiv Bahl appointed as Director General of ICMR

  • Rajiv Bahl has been appointed as Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) & Secretary of the Department of Health Research for a period of three years.
  • Bahl is currently working at the World Health Organization in Geneva.
  • His predecessor, Dr Balram Bhargava’s extended tenure as Director General of ICMR and Secretary of the Department of Health Research ended in July.
  • ICMR is the apex body in India for the formulation, coordination and promotion of biomedical research, is one of the oldest medical research bodies in the world.
  • During the covid-19 pandemic, this top medical research centre addressed played an important role in generating research based scientific evidence and solutions in the fight against the pandemic.

  • Bharat Lal, a 1988-batch Indian Forest officer of Gujarat cadre, had served as Gujarat government’s resident commissioner in Delhi and has been known to be close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
