Uttar Pradesh CM launched a scheme for cashless medical benefit

  • Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath has launched a scheme Deen Dayal Upadhyaya State Employees Cashless Medical Scheme.
  • Objective- To provide cashless medical facilities to state government employees, pensioners, and their dependents.
  • The eligible people will receive cashless medical facilities at government-run institutions, medical colleges, and hospitals without any financial limit.
  • Also, these facilities up to Rs 5 lakh will be available under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme.

Jharkhand CM launched Jharkhand Tourism Policy 2021

  • Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has launched the tourism policy 2021 for the state.
  • Objective – To revive, renew and revamp the tourism sector of the state, to provide a different dimension and perspective as to how the world views the state of Jharkhand.
  • Under the policy, the government would provide a single window system, capital investment subsidy at 20-25% up to a limit of Rs 10 crore, and reimbursement of 75% of net GST paid for a period of five years to the investors in state’s tourism sector.

IIT Kanpur launched NIRMAN Accelerator Program

  • The Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre (SIIC) at IIT Kanpur has launched the NIRMAN Accelerator Program.
  • It is supported by the Department of Science and Technology.
  • 15 start-ups will be selected and given the opportunity to accelerate their product journey from ‘lab to market’.
  • The programme will focus on the manufacturing startups engaged in healthcare and agriculture domains to help them overcome the challenges from their prototype-to-market journey.
  • The best-performing startups among the cohort of 15 startups will receive a cash award of up to ₹1 million.
  • The 6-month-long programme will be devised into four segments, namely – Principles of Product Growth, Engineering Acceleration, Navigating the Compliance Puzzle, and Leading to Next-Stage Growth. The programme will offer knowledge workshops, one-on-one mentoring support, diving deep for customized support for clinical validation, and business and investor connect.

Jammu Film Festival to begin from September 3

  • The second edition of Jammu film festival will be held here from September 3 with films from 54 countries slated to be screened over two days of the event.
  • The first-ever international film festival here was held in September 2019 in Jammu, the winter capital of the Union Territory.
  • 54 projects from 15 countries including feature films, documentaries, and shorts will be screened during the event.

Assam Government gives approval to second wildlife sanctuary in Barak Valley

  • Assam’s Barak Valley will soon get a second wildlife sanctuary with Governor Jagdish Mukhi approving a proposal for the creation of Barak Bhuban Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • The Barak Valley also houses the Borail Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • In exercise of the power conferred by Section 35 of Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 as amended up to date, the Governor of Assam is pleased to declare its intention to constitute the area described in the Schedule annexed hereto as the Barak Bhuban Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • The Barak Bhuban Wildlife Sanctuary will be spread over an area of 320 sq km between the Barak river and the Sonai river.
  • The area has eight recorded species of primates — slow loris, rhesus macaque, pig-tailed macaque, stump-tailed macaque, Assamese macaque, capped langur, phayre’s leaf monkey and hoolock gibbon.
  • It’s also an important habitat for king cobra, according to the Cachar Forest Division.
  • Named after the second-largest river in the northeast, the Barak Valley is home to 550 species of birds and 100 species of mammals.

Cochin Shipyard signed an agreement with IIM Kozhikode to boost start-ups in the maritime sector

  • The Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) and the Indian Institute of Management-Kozhikode (IIMK) have signed an agreement to boost start-ups in the maritime sector.
  • The CSL and IIMK’s business incubator Laboratory for Innovation Venturing and Entrepreneurship (LIVE) plan to augment initiatives to develop an ecosystem for supporting the startups in the maritime sector from the technical, regulatory, financial, and marketing points of view by bringing the stakeholders together.
  • Under this initiative, start-ups can get up to Rs 50 lakh as seed grants, Rs one crore as prototyping grants, and equity funding for start-ups at the scale-up stage.
  • IIMK LIVE will act as an implementation partner of this initiative and will provide incubation, mentorship, and training to startups selected under this program.
  • Start-ups selected under the scheme would have to be committed to working on innovation, improvement of products, processes, or services, and present a scalable business model with a high potential for employment generation and wealth creation.

With USD 87 billion, India becomes the top remittance recipient in 2021: WHO report

  • According to a World Health Organisation report, India has received USD 87 billion in remittances in 2021 and becomes the top remittance recipient.
  • The United States was the largest source country for remittances in 2020, followed by the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Switzerland.
  • In 2021, the top five remittance recipients in current US dollars were India, China, Mexico, the Philippines (36 billion dollars), and Egypt (33 billion dollars).

WHO declared monkeypox a global health emergency

  • World Health Organization (WHO) has declared monkeypox a global health emergency. It came at the end of the second meeting of the WHO’s emergency committee on the virus.
  • The classification is the highest alert that the WHO can issue and follows a worldwide upsurge in cases.
  • More than 16,000 cases have now been reported from 75 countries.
  • There have been five deaths so far.

RS Gandhi appointed as Additional Independent Director of YES Bank

  • YES Bank has announced the appointment of Rama Subramaniam Gandhi as an additional independent director of the bank for a period of five years.
  • Gandhi is currently a financial sector policy expert and adviser. Currently, he advises banks, finance companies, fintech entities, payment system entities, investors and funds on subjects ranging from financial regulations and Indian economy.
  • He is an independent director on the boards of several financial sector entities.
  • Gandhi was a Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India for three years from 2014 to 2017.
  • He had a three-year secondment to the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), the capital market regulator.

India and Japan conducted a maritime partnership exercise in the Andaman Sea

  • A Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX) was conducted between Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force and the Indian Navy in the Andaman Sea.
  • INS Sukanya and JS Samidare undertook various exercises including seamanship activities as part of the operational interaction.
  • The exercise was aimed at enhancing interoperability and streamlining seamanship and communication procedures.

Neeraj Chopra won silver at  World Athletics Championships 2022, Oregon 

  • Neeraj Chopra has clinched the silver medal with best throw of 88.13 meter, in the javelin throw final at 2022 World Championships, Eugene, Oregon.
  • He also becomes only the second Indian and first male track and field athlete to win a medal.
  • Anderson Peters (Grenada) has bagged gold with a best throw of 90.54 meter while Jakub Vadlejch (Czech Republic) took the bronze with 88.09 meter.
  • Legendary long jumper, Anju Bobby George was the first Indian to win bronze in 2003 at Paris.

  • National Thermal Engineer Day is commemorated every year on July 24.
  • It honours the importance of thermal management in the electronics sectors along with the engineers and businesses that make it possible.
  • The Advanced Thermal Inc (ATS) first acknowledged July 24th as the National Thermal Engineer Day in the year 2014 with the intention to highlight the innovation of the thermal industries.

25 July – World Drowning Prevention Day

  • World Drowning Prevention Day is celebrated annually on 25 July.
  • The United Nations recognised this day for the global advocacy of drowning prevention with a resolution to move towards a more sustainably-developed world.
  • The first-ever World Drowning Prevention Day was commemorated in 2021 on July 25.
  • According to a World Health Organization report, an estimated 236,000 people lose their lives each year by drowning. It is one of the top ten causes of death for children and adults between ages 1 and 24.
  • WHO further states that more than 90% of drowning deaths in low- and middle-income countries occur in rivers, lakes, wells, and domestic water storage vessels.
  • Most of these deaths are linked to mundane activities such as bathing, collecting water for domestic use, traveling on boats or ferries, and fishing.

24 July – Income Tax Day

  • The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has observed the 163rd anniversary of Income Tax Day on July 24, 2022.
  • Income Tax was introduced for the first time in India by Sir James Wilson on 24 July 1860.
  • Purpose – To compensate for the losses incurred by the British regime during the first war of independence against British Rule in 1857.
  • The CBDT is a statutory authority functioning under the Central Board of Revenue Act, 1963.
