BSES Yamuna Power Limited commissioned India’s 1st smart managed EV charging station in New Delhi

  • BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL), a subsidiary of Reliance Infrastructure commissioned India’s first ‘Smart Managed EV (Electric Vehicle) Charging Station’ in New Delhi.
  • The project is supported by Nordic Innovation, an organization promoted by the governments of Nordic countries, and executed by Fortum Charge & Drive.
  • The management and operation of Smart EV Charging Stations will be under BYPL.
  • It has the capacity to charge five EVs simultaneously and the charging station can be integrated with BYPL’s SCADA system. It is located at BYPL’s 11 kV substation building in Mayur Vihar Extension Phase-I in New Delhi.

Tamil Nadu overtook Karnataka to become the top state in overall installed renewable capacity

Tamil Nadu overtook Karnataka to become the top state in overall installed renewable capacity

  • According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MoNRE), Tamil Nadu has achieved the first position in overall installed renewable energy capacity in India surpassing Karnataka.
  • In recent years, Tamil Nadu has increased its capacity across solar and wind segments to regain its top position against Karnataka.
  • As of 31st January 2022, Tamil Nadu’s total installed renewable capacity stood at 15,914 MegaWatt (MW) as compared to Karnataka’s total clean energy capacity of 15,795 MW.
  • Rajasthan and Gujarat added the highest renewable capacity (4.8 GW and 2.4 GW respectively) in the current fiscal year till 31st January 2022.

Cochin International Airport to become power-positive with new solar plant

  • Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL), the world’s first airport fully powered by solar energy, is to become power-positive with the commissioning of its 12 MWp solar power plant near Payyannur in the Kannur district of Kerala.
  • CIAL’s solar plants together generate two lakh units of power a day whereas the daily consumption of power in the airport stands at 6 lakh units.
  • The airport became the first in the world in 2015 to be fully powered by solar energy.

Japan and India renewed Bilateral Swap Arrangement of up to $75 billion

  • Japan and India have renewed the Bilateral Swap Arrangement (BSA) of up to $75 billion with effect from February 28, 2022.
  • The Bank of Japan, acting as agent for the Minister of Finance of Japan, and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) signed the Amendment and Restatement Agreement of the BSA.
  • BSA is a two-way arrangement where both authorities can swap their local currencies in exchange for the US Dollar.

New Development Bank will be the 1st multilateral agency to open office in Gift City

  • New Development Bank (NDB) will become the first multilateral agency to open an office in Gujarat International Finance Tech (GIFT) City.
  • NDB has received approval for the same and will open the office in May 2022 in GIFT City. NDB announced the Director-General position for India Regional Office and will be responsible for origination-implementation of operations in India.
  • NDB also expects to partner with the newly launched National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NBFID) to support crucial infrastructure projects in India.
  • NDB was set up in 2014 by BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) and started operations in 2015 at Shanghai, China (headquarters) with the objective of mobilising resources for infrastructure and sustainable development projects in the BRICS as well as other emerging markets.

RBI canceled CoR of PC Financial Services operating ‘Cashbean’ app

  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI) canceled the certificate of registration (CoR) issued to PC Financial Services Private Limited, Delhi due to increase in complaints against usurious rate of interest and unfair recovery practices being followed by several digital lenders.
  • The action was taken under Section 45-IA (6) (iv) of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934. The PC Financial Services Private Limited used to carry out its lending operations through an app called Cashbean. 
  • It is the first instance when such regulatory action taken against an entity. It is now debarred from transacting the business of a Non-Banking Financial Institution (NBFI) under RBI Act, 1934.
  • Earlier the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) seized bank gateway funds worth Rs 288 crore belonging to PC Financial Services vide three seizure orders issued under the provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999 (FEMA).

South Indian Bank entered into Bancassurance partnership with Star Health and Allied Insurance to offer health insurance

  • South Indian Bank (SIB) has joined hands with Star Health and Allied Insurance Company Limited as a corporate agent to provide innovative health insurance products for the SIB’s ~6.5 million customers spread over 923 branches across India.
  • The SIB’s customers can avail benefits of Star Health’s retail insurance products and group affinity products through the SIB’s distribution channels.
  • The partnership will enable the South Indian Bank customers to financially safeguard themselves from rising healthcare costs. Star Health and Allied Insurance is India’s first Standalone Health Insurance provider.

FDI equity inflows dip 16% during Apr-Dec 2021 to $43.17 bn: DPIIT data

  • According to data from the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), during April-December 2021, India’s Foreign direct investment (FDI) equity inflows contracted by 16% to USD 43.17 billion.
  • During the same time period the previous year, inflows stood at USD 51.47 billion. Total FDI inflows (reinvested earnings, equity inflows, and other capital) totaled USD 60.34 billion in the first nine months of this fiscal year, compared to USD 67.5 billion the previous year.
  • During April-December 2021 period, with investments of USD 11.7 billion, Singapore came out on top. US with USD 7.52 billion, Mauritius with investments of USD 6.58 billion, Cayman Islands with USD 2.74 billion, Netherlands with USD 2.66 billion, and the UK with USD 1.44 billion followed Singapore.
  • The highest inflows were in the hardware and computer software sector with USD 10.25 billion during the nine-month period of this fiscal year. The automobile industry with USD 5.96 billion stood second and it was followed by the services sector with USD 5.35 billion, construction (infrastructure) activities with inflows of USD 1.6 billion, and pharma with inflows of USD 1.2 billion.

Madhabi Puri Buch appointed first woman chairperson of SEBI

  • The government has announced Madhabi Puri Buch as the new chairperson of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).
  • This is the first time that a woman and a person from the private sector have been chosen for a key post with the market regulator.
  • Buch, who was serving as the whole-time member at SEBI till last year and before that was serving at the New Development Bank in Shanghai, has been appointed for a period of three years.
  • She will replace Ajay Tyagi as the SEBI chief who was a 1984 batch IAS officer of Himachal Pradesh cadre and was appointed as the chairman of Sebi on 1 March 2017, for a period of three years.

Tan Kim Her appointed as India’s Badminton Doubles Coach

  • Malaysia’s Tan Kim Her has been appointed as India’s doubles coach in badminton till the Asian Games in 2026.
  • He has been credited with shaping the careers of doubles specialists Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy in his first stint (2015-2019) as doubles coach in India.
  • Among other things, he will identify Indian coaches with potential and assist in their skill development by holding four workshops each year.

  • Spain’s Rafael Nadal has won the singles title of Mexican Open 2022 (Acapulco title), defeating British number one Cameron Norrie by 6-4 and 6-4.
  • This is the 91st ATP title of his career and the third title of the season. This is the 4th time that Rafael Nadal has won the Mexican Open title, after winning the previous ones in 2005, 2013, and 2020.
  • Men’s double title winners of Mexican Open 2022 are Feliciano Lopez (Spain) and Stefanos Tsitsipas (Greece).

Pooja Jatyan became 1st Indian to win a silver in individual section of Para Archery World Championships

  • Para-archer Pooja Jatyan scripted history as she became the first Indian to win a silver in an individual section of the Para World Championships in Dubai, UAE.
  • Pooja lost to Italy’s Patrilli Vincenza in the final to be content with the silver medal. India ended its campaign with two silver medals, a first for the country.
  • The compound mixed pair of Shyam Sundar Swamyand Jyoti Baliyan had earlier opened India’s account by winning a silver medal.

27 February: Polio National Immunization Day 2022

  • In 2022, the Government of India has organized the Polio National Immunization Day 2022 (also known as ‘’Polio Ravivar”) on February 27, 2022, to give two drops of oral polio vaccine (OPV) to every child in the country under the age of five.
  • Over 15 crore children will be covered under the drive across all 36 States and UTs in 735 districts. The National Polio Immunization Drive for 2022 was launched by Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya on February 26, 2022.
  • In India, one nationwide NID and two Sub-National Immunization Day (SNIDs) for polio is held every year to maintain population immunity against wild poliovirus and to sustain its polio-free status.
  • India was removed from the list of polio-endemic countries in 2012 and in 2013 the entire Southeast Asia Region was declared Polio free. The last case of wild poliovirus reported in India was on 13th January 2011.

Legendary West Indies spinner Sonny Ramadhin passed away

  • West Indies spin legend Sonny Ramadhin has passed away at the age of 92. He was a part of the side that won its first away series in England in 1950.
  • He made his Test debut against England at Old Trafford in 1950. Ramadhin ended up playing 43 Tests and taking 158 wickets at an average of 28.98.
