Bashar Al-Assad Re-Elected for 4th term as Syria's President

  • Bashar al-Assad was re-elected as President for a fourth term in war-ravaged Syria, amid accusations that polls were “neither free nor fair”.
  • Parliamentary speaker announced, Assad got 95.1 percent of votes cast. In last multi-candidate poll of 2014, he had won 88 percent of vote.

Hong Kong woman breaks record for fastest ascent of Everest

  • Hong Kong mountaineer, Tsang Yin-hung, recorded “world’s fastest ascent of Everest by a woman” in just 26 hours.
  • Tsang climbed 8,848.86-metre mountain in a record time of 25 hours and 50 minutes in her third attempt. Earlier in 2017, Tsang became first Hong Kong woman to climbed the top. She broke the earlier record of Nepali women Phunjo Jhangmu Lama completed the climb in 39 hours 6 minutes.

Value and volume of banknotes in circulation increased by 16.8% and 7.2% respectively in 2020-21: RBI

  • The Reserve Bank of India on 27th May said banknotes in circulation witnessed higher than average increase during 2020-21, on account of precautionary holding of cash by people due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and its prolonged continuance.
  • The value and volume of banknotes in circulation increased by 16.8 per cent and 7.2 per cent, respectively, during 2020-21, as against an increase of 14.7 per cent and 6.6 per cent, respectively, witnessed during 2019-20.

Frauds reported by banks fell by 25% in value terms to Rs 1.38 lakh crore in 2020-21: RBI

  • Frauds reported by banks fell by 25% in value terms in just one year to Rs 1.38 lakh crore at the end of fiscal year ended March 2021, data released by the RBI as part of it annual report showed.
  • During the same period last year total frauds reported by lenders was at Rs 1.85 lakh crore. In number terms fraud reporting was down by 15 percent on a year basis to 7363.
  • Public sector banks contributed to more than 59 percent of the total value of frauds at Rs 81,901 crore while private sector banks contributed 33 percent at Rs 46,335 crore.

Bharat Ratna Professor Rao honoured with International ENI Award 2020

  • Bharat Ratna Professor C.N.R. Rao has been honoured with the International ENI Award 2020 for his research in renewable energy sources and energy storage.
  • Professor C.N.R Rao has been working on hydrogen energy as the only source of energy for the benefit of all mankind. Photochemical and electrochemical production of hydrogen, hydrogen storage, non-metallic catalysis, and solar production of hydrogen were the highlights of his work.
  • The ENI Awards 2020 will be presented on October 14, 2021, in an official ceremony that will take place at Quirinal Palace in Rome. It will be attended by the President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella.

  • Jagjit Pavadia, the former Narcotics Commissioner of India and a retired officer of the Indian Revenue Service (Customs), has been elected president of the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB).
  • INCB monitors the compliance of UN Member States with the three international drug control conventions and the functioning of the international drug control system.

Govt. appointment of B V R Subrahmanyam as Commerce Secy from July

  • J&K Chief Secretary, B V R Subrahmanyam, was on 27th May posted as OSD in the Union Commerce Ministry and will succeed Commerce Secretary Anup Wadhawan on his retirement next month-end.
  • Subrahmanyam from J&K, three seniormost IAS officers — Pradip Kumar Tripathi, Sudhanshu Panday and Arun Kumar Mehta — are front runners for the Chief Secretary’s post here.
  • Tripathi and Panday are posted in the Centre, as Secretaries, Steel and Food and Public Distribution, respectively.

  • Research and Analysis Wing chief Samant Kumar Goel and Intelligence Bureau head Arvind Kumar were given a one-year extension in their services.
  • Goel, a 1984-batch IPS officer from Punjab cadre, would continue to be the Secretary of Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) for a period one-year beyond the presence tenure which ends on June 30 and Similarly, IB Head Arvind Kumar.
