National News

Cabinet approved Competition Amendment Bill

  • The Union cabinet has cleared a Bill to amend the two-decade-old Competition Act 2002.
  • It aims to reform the competition regulation ecosystem.
  • The Competition (Amendment) Bill seeks to introduce changes to the governing structure of the Competition Commission of India (CCI) and modify the substantive provisions in law to address the needs of new age markets.
  • The proposed Bill is set to expand the scope of prohibited anti-competitive agreements to cover new age marketing arrangements which do not squarely fit into conventional supply chain arrangements for which explicit regulatory provisions are given in the law.

Cabinet approves investment of Rs 12,000 crore by BPCL’s unit

  • The Union Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved additional investment of USD 1,600 million (around Rs 12,000 crore) by Bharat Petro Resources Ltd (BPRL) for development of BM-SEAL-11 Concession Project in Brazil.
  • BPRL has 40 percent participating interest (PI) in this concession along with Petrobras, National oil company of Brazil, as the operator with 60 percent Participating Interest.
  • The CCEA also approved an increase in the limit of equity investment by BPCL in BPRL and authorized share capital of the company from Rs 15,000 crore to Rs 20,000 crore (to be subscribed by BPCL from time to time).
  • Also, the limit of equity investment by BPRL International BV in International BV Brasil Petroleo Limitada, through an intermediate wholly-owned subsidiary, to Rs 15,000 crore from the current limit of Rs 5,000 crore was also approved.
  • The BPRL is a wholly owned subsidiary of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL). Since 2008, BPRL has been associated with development of this project in Brazil.

  • Coca-Cola has signed Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra for Limca Sportz promotion.
  • Recently, Neeraj Chopra has become the first-ever Indian to win a silver medal at World Athletics Championships with his best throw of 88.13 m.
  • Also, Neeraj Chopra has been ruled out of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 in England due to an injury he picked up at World Athletics Championships.

Lulo Rose: Largest pink diamond in 300 years found in Angola

  • A rare pure pink diamond, believed to be the largest found in 300 years, has been unearthed in Angola, a country in Central Africa.
  • It is a 170-carat pink diamond & has been named ‘The Lulo Rose’.
  • It weighs 34 grams.
  • Miners in Angola discovered it at the Lulo mine in Angola’s diamond-rich northeast.
  • The Lulo Rose is a type 2a diamond, meaning it has few or no impurities.
  • The pink gemstone is the fifth largest diamond found at the mine, where 27 diamonds of 100 carats or more have been found.

ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund launched ICICI Prudential Nifty IT Index Fund

  • ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund has launched ICICI Prudential Nifty IT Index Fund, an open-ended index scheme replicating the Nifty IT index.
  • The new fund offer (NFO) opened for subscription 28 July and will close on 8 August, 2022.
  • The NIFTY IT index captures the performance of Indian information technology companies.

Dinesh Shahra Lifetime Award’ instituted for the first time

  • Dinesh Shahra Foundation (DSF) has instituted a first-of-its-kind ‘Dinesh Shahra Lifetime Award’ for Excellence in Music.
  • The initiative is supported by the Indian Arts & Cultural Society. Apart from a trophy or memento, the recognition will also include a significant cash component.
  • Dinesh Shahra’s book – Sanatan Leela, was also launched during the event.
  • The Announcement of this novel recognition was made by Dinesh Shahra, Trustee -DSF, during a cultural event titled ‘Mausiqui’ in Mumbai recently.
  • The event ‘Mausiqui’ was a tribute to deceased legends – Pandit Shivkumar Sharma and Lata Mangeshkar who have made invaluable contributions to Indian music.

ISRO earned USD 279 million in foreign exchange through satellite launches

  • Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has earned 279 million dollars in foreign exchange by launching satellites for global clients.
  • ISRO in association with its commercial arms has successfully launched 345 foreign satellites from 34 countries on board Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).
  • Total foreign exchange revenue earned through launching of foreign satellites amounts to USD 56 million (one million=10 lakhs) and 220 million Euros approximately.
  • Recently on June 30, the PSLV-C53 mission by ISRO successfully launched 3 Singapore customer satellites: DS-EO, NeuSAR, and SCOOB-1.

PV Sindhu & Manpreet Singh named India’s flagbearers for CWG 2022

  • Indian men’s hockey team captain Manpreet Singh & shuttler PV Sindhu have been named as India’s flag-bearers for the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022.
  • Sindhu was also the flagbearer at the 2018 CWG in Gold Coast.
  • A total of 215 athletes from India will be taking part in the CWG 2022 taking place in Birmingham, England from 28 July to 8 August 2022.

Three new countries received ICC Membership status

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) awarded Associate membership status to 3 new countries during the ICC Annual Conference in Birmingham.
  • These three new members include Cambodia & Uzbekistan from Asia and Cote D’Ivoire from Africa.
  • The addition of these new countries has taken the total number of ICC members to 108 countries including 96 associates.
  • The two Asian teams take the total count of Asian countries to 25 while Cote D’Ivoire is the 21st country from Africa.
  • A major criteria to gain ICC Membership is detailed in ‘Participation and domestic structures’ of Clause 2.1 (d) of the ICC Membership Criteria. This includes having in place a proper structure with minimum team requirements for 50-over and 20-over tournaments, aside from clear junior and women’s pathways.
  • Ukraine’s application for ICC Membership is deferred until cricket activity is able to safely resume within the country, but the ICC will continue to support the Ukraine Cricket Federation through this process.
  • Cricket Russia’s suspension at the 2021 AGM has turned into termination after it failed to resolve the issues and demonstrate compliance following suspension.

  • In England, the Leicester Cricket Ground has been named after India’s legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar.
  • It has been named after Gavaskar to acknowledge his immense contribution to uplifting Indian Cricket to a certain height.
  • There is already a ground named after Gavaskar in the Kentucky area of the US.

Obituary

Atulananda Goswami, an eminent Assamese writer, passed away

  • Eminent Assamese writer Atulananda Goswami passed away at the age of 87 in Guwahati.
  • Goswami was awarded the Sahitya Academy award for his novel ‘Seneh Jorir Ganthi’ in 2006. His other notable works include ‘Namgharia’, ‘Rajpaat’, ‘Polatok’ and ‘Ashray!
  • He was known as a short story writer, a litterateur, and a novelist par excellence.
