IIT Roorkee launches Earthquake Early Warning Mobile App for Uttarakhand

  • Indian Institute of Technology in Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) launched an earthquake early warning (EEW) Mobile App for Uttarakhand. This mobile app project was  sponsored by Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA).
  • Earthquake early warning system will alert people regarding the onset of calamity on mobile application. It can detect onset of the Earthquake and issue warnings before significant tremors take place in state.

Germany becomes 5th country to sign ISA Framework Agreement

  • Germany became the 5th country to sign the International Solar Alliance Framework Agreement after amendments to it entered into force on 8th January 2021, opening its Membership to all Member States of the United Nations.
  • Membership to the ISA was earlier limited to 124 countries, which were partially or entirely located within the tropics. This didn’t allow major solar energy economies such as Germany to join the alliance that is being increasingly seen as a foreign policy tool.

RBI revises retail inflation projection for FY22 to 5.7%

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has revised upwards retail inflation projection for FY 22 to 5.7 per cent from 5.1 per cent, even as it retained real GDP projection at 9.5 per cent.
  • The revised quarterly retail inflation projections are: 5.9 per cent in Q2 (5.4 per cent earlier projection); 5.3 per cent in Q3 (4.7 per cent); and 5.8 per cent in Q4 (5.3 per cent) of 2021-22.

Dhriti Banerjee becomes 1st woman Director of Zoological Survey of India (ZSI)

  • In over 100 years history of the Zoological Survey of India, Dhriti Banerjee has been appointed as the director of organisation. The proposal in this regard was approved by the cabinet committee on appointments on 4th August.
  • She has been an eminent scientist conducting research in zoogeography, taxonomy, morphology among others. Since 2012, Dhriti has been engaged with ZSI’s digital sequence information project.

Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award renamed as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 6 announced that India’s top sports award Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award will hereby be called the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.
  • Hockey greats Dhyan Chand and KD Singh Babu were the stars as India won six straight Olympic tournaments between 1928 and 1956. Five of their eight triumphs came after India’s independence from British rule in 1947.
  • The award was inaugurated in 1991-92, the award comprises a medallion, a certificate, and a cash prize of 25 lakh.

6 August: Hiroshima Day

  • August 6, 2021, observed solemnly as Hiroshima Day around the world, will be the 76th anniversary of the atomic bombing of the Japanese city in the final year of World War II. On this day in 1945, the United States dropped the very first deployed nuclear bomb in the city of Hiroshima.
  • The Manhattan Project, commissioned by the US, created two atomic bombs. The first one, called ‘The Little Boy’ was dropped in the city of Hiroshima while the second one, dubbed ‘The Fat Man’, was dropped in Nagasaki by the US on August 6 and 9, respectively.

  • International Beer Day (IBD) is a celebration on the first Friday of every August founded in 2007 in Santa Cruz, California by Jesse Avshalomov.
  • Since its inception, International Beer Day has grown from a small localized event in the western United States into a worldwide celebration spanning 207 cities, 80 countries and 6 continents.

Specifically, International Beer Day has three declared purposes:

  • To gather with friends and enjoy the taste of beer.
  • To celebrate those responsible for brewing and serving beer.

Obituary

Olympian footballer S.S. ‘Babu’ Nayaran passes away

  • Two-times Olympian Shankar Subramaniam, alias “Babu” Nayaran passed away. He was India’s goalkeeper during the 1956 and 1960 Olympics. Besides representing Maharashtra in football and basketball, Narayan emerged as one of the most reliable goalkeepers in India.
  • His decade-long career for the national team also included the stellar effort of India finishing fourth in the 1956 Olympics and representing India in the 1964 Asian Games.
