Exp. 12 July – Paper Bag Day
Paper Bag Day is celebrated every year on July 12 as a reminder of the importance of eco-friendly alternatives to plastic bags.
Objective – To raise awareness about the harmful effects of plastic on the environment and promote the use of sustainable alternatives like paper bags.
Plastic bags not only take centuries to decompose, but they also endanger wildlife, pollute oceans and landscapes, and cause lasting damage to ecosystems.
Paper bags have a historical origin rooted in the 19th century when Francis Wolle invented the first paper bag machine in 1852. This groundbreaking invention revolutionized the production of paper bags, leading to their widespread adoption as a packaging solution.
However, the popularity of plastic bags surged in the 20th century due to their convenience and cost-effectiveness. Nevertheless, as people became increasingly aware of the detrimental environmental impact of plastic bags, the use of paper bags resurfaced.
A significant turning point occurred in 1999 when San Francisco took a stand against plastic bags by banning their usage in grocery stores and pharmacies, becoming the first city worldwide to enforce such a prohibition.
