Indian High Commission signed MoU to establish Hindi Chair at Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka

  • The Indian High Commission has signed an MoU with the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka to establish a Hindi Chair.
  • High Commissioner Gopal Bagale and Vice-Chancellor of Sabaragamuwa University Prof. Uday Ratnayake signed an MoU for establishment of Hindi Chair for cultural engagement through Indian Council for Cultural Relations.
  • The Hindi Chair will help to acquaint the students with India, its history, and culture. This will pave the way for popularizing Hindi by appointing Indian faculties.
  • The Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka is a public university located in Belihuloya, Balangoda, Sri Lanka. It was established on 20th November 1991.

Centre renamed Integrated Food Security Scheme as Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana

  • The Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had approved a new Integrated Food Security scheme for providing free foodgrains to Antodaya Ann Yojna (AAY) & Primary Household (PHH) beneficiaries, to be rolled out from 1st January 2023.
  • New scheme has been named as Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana (PMGKAY).
  • Implementation of the new scheme has started from 1st January 2023, benefitting more than 80 crores poor and poorest of poor people.
  • The integrated scheme will strengthen the provisions of NFSA, 2013 in terms of accessibility, affordability, and availability of food grains for the poor.
  • For the effective and uniform implementation of NFSA 2013, PMGKAY will subsume the two subsidy schemes of the Department of Food & Public Distribution (a) Food Subsidy to FCI (b) Food Subsidy for decentralized procurement states dealing with procurement, allocation, and delivery of free foodgrains to the states under NFSA.
  • The Central Government will spend more than Rs 2 lakh crore in 2023 as food subsidy under NFSA and other welfare schemes, to remove the financial burden of the poor and the poorest of the poor.

14th edition of the World Spice Congress (WSC) to be held in Mumbai

  • The 14th edition of the World Spice Congress (WSC) is to be held in Mumbai from 16-18 February 2023.
  • Objective – To open up newer opportunities to promote the international trade of Indian spices.
  • The event, organized to create a platform not only for traders but also policy regulators, will have special business sessions dedicated to promoting spice trade among the G20 countries.
  • Policymakers, regulatory authorities, spice trade associations, government officials as well as technical experts from key G20 countries will participate in the event.
  • The theme of the WSC 2023 is VISION 2030: S-P-I-C-E-S (Sustainability, Productivity, Innovation, Collaboration, Excellence and Safety).
  • Union Minister Piyush Goyal will also distribute the trophies and Awards for Excellence in Exports of Spices on 17th February 2023.
  • The WSC is organized by the Spices Board of India.
  • Maharashtra is one of the leading states producing spices. It is the largest producer of turmeric in India. Maharashtra produces two GI-tagged turmeric varieties and one GI-tagged chilli variety.
  • Coastal areas of Maharashtra are also known for the production of GI-tagged Kokum. The state is one of the largest exporting hubs for spices.

PM Modi inaugurated 26th National Youth Festival at Hubbali in Karnataka

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated 26th National Youth Festival, organized in Karnataka from 12th -16th January 2023.
  • Theme of this event: Viksit Yuva – Viksit Bharat.The event also included folk dances and songs.
  • The festival aims to step up the role of youth in nation building during Amrit Kaal. It will be an endeavour to disseminate the message of ‘Panch Pran’ espoused by the Prime Minister in his Independence Day address.
  • The festival brings diverse cultures from all parts of the country on a common platform and unites the participants in the spirit of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.
  • Over 7500 youngsters representing the states and Union Territories India have congregated at the festival to exchange their talents.
  • This festival is held every year to provide exposure to our talented youth at the national level.

Axis Bank signed MoU with IISc Bengaluru to set up Centre for Mathematics and Computing

  • Axis Bank has signed an MoU with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru to establish a Centre for Mathematics and Computing at the Institute.
  • The centre spread over 1.6 lakh square feet will have labs and programmes benefitting faculty and students.
  • Additionally, it will host the new IISc BTech programme in Mathematics and Computing and the ongoing Interdisciplinary Ph.D. programme in Mathematical Sciences.
  • Over 500 engineers and scientists are estimated to be benefited annually.

World Bank projected India’s economic growth to slow to 6.9% in FY23

  • The World Bank has projected that India’s economy would grow 6.9% in FY23, which is much lower than the 8.7% growth achieved by the country in the previous financial year (FY2021/ 22).
  • India is expected to be the fastest-growing economy of the seven largest developing economies.
  • The World Bank stated that global growth is slowing sharply in the face of elevated inflation, higher interest rates, reduced investment, and disruptions caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
  • The World Bank has also predicted that global growth in 2023 would slow to 1.7% from the 3%.
  • This would mark the first time in more than 80 years that two global recessions have occurred within the same decade.
  • In October, IMF had said that global growth is forecast to slow from 6% in 2021 to 3.2% in 2022 and 2.7% in 2023.

Centre approved ₹2,600 crore as incentive for banks to promote digital payments

  • The Union Cabinet has approved a ₹2,600 crore scheme for promoting RuPay debit cards and low-value BHIM-UPI transactions.
  • The Cabinet has approved this incentive scheme to promote small amount transactions between individuals and merchants through RuPay Debit Cards and BHIM-UPI.
  • Under the scheme, banks will be given financial incentives in the current financial year 2022-23 to promote ‘Point of Sale’ (PoS) i.e. payment machines and e-commerce transactions using RuPay and UPI.
  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said in the last budget, will continue to provide financial help to increase digital payments.
  • India has remained a cash-dependent economy since independence. India’s Cash to GDP ratio is 13% while the global average is at most 8%.

India successfully carried out test launch of Prithvi-Il ballistic missile

  • Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has successfully launched Short-Range Ballistic Missile (SRBM) Prithvi-Il from the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, Odisha coast.
  • The missile, which is powered by light propulsion twin engines, has a range of around 350 km and can carry 500-1,000 kg of warheads.
  • It uses an advanced inertial navigation system to strike the set target.
  • Prithvi-Il missile is a well-established system. The Prithvi-II was earlier successfully test-fired during night hours in 2018 and in 2019.
  • Prithvi was developed by the DRDO under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme.

Former Union Minister Sharad Yadav passed away

  • Former Union Minister and RJD Leader Sharad Yadav passed away recently at the age of 75-year in Gurugram.
  • He was elected from Uttar Pradesh’s Badaun parliamentary seat in 1989.
  • He also served as the Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Consumer Affairs from 1999-2004.
  • He contested from the Madhepura Lok Sabha constituency in Bihar in a by-election caused by Lalu Prasad Yadav’s resignation from his seat in 2004. He was elected from Madhepura four times in 1991, 1996, 1999 and 2009.
  • Sharad Yadav was probably the first politician in India to be elected as a member of the Lok Sabha from three states. Sharad Yadav was the convenor of the National Democratic Alliance.
