Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar inaugurated National Maternal Health Workshop

  • Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar has inaugurated the National Maternal Health Workshop in New Delhi.
  • The theme of the workshop was “Striving for zero preventable maternal mortality”.
  • India has achieved a momentous milestone in reduction of maternal mortality ratio (MMR) registering a significant decline from 130 in 2014-16 to 97 per lakh live births in 2018-20.
  • More than 3.6 crore pregnant women have received comprehensive antenatal care under this program across all states and union territories.

Finland and India signed joint declaration on migration and mobility

  • India and Finland have signed a joint declaration of Intent on migration and mobility to arrive at a mutually beneficial arrangement on migration and mobility between the two countries.
  • This will facilitate the mobility of students, academics, researchers, business people, and professionals and to combat irregular migration.
  • The declaration was signed by Union Minister of State for External Affairs V. Muraleedharan and Minster of Employment of Finland Ms. Tuula Haatainen.
  • India and Finland share warm and friendly relations underpinned by common values of democracy, freedom, rule of law, and respect for human rights.

US prints its first-ever currency with two women’s signatures

  • The U.S. The Treasury (United States of America’s Finance Ministry) has printed the first US banknotes (currency notes) with two women’s signatures.
  • The new currency notes of $1 and $5 value carry the signature of the Secretary of Treasury (American Finance Minister) Janet Yellen and Lynn Malerba.
  • Lynn Malerba is Native American and is the chief of the Mohegan Tribe, who holds the position of Treasurer of the United States within the Department of Treasury, United States government.
  • Janet Yellen is a former chairman of the United States Central Bank, Federal Reserve of New York. She was the first female head of the Federal Reserve.
  • The United States currency notes are popularly called Greenback.

New Zealand passed world’s first law to ban smoking for future generation

  • New Zealand has passed a new anti-smoking law which banned the future generation of New Zealand from purchasing tobacco.
  • The suite of new laws include bans on selling tobacco to anyone born on or after 1 January 2009, punishable by fines up to NZ$150,000 ($95,910).
  • The ban will remain in place for a person’s whole life.
  • The legislation will also reduce the amount of nicotine allowed in smoked tobacco products and cut the number of retailers able to sell tobacco by 90%.
  • Retailers licensed to sell tobacco will be cut to 600 by the end of 2023 from 6,000.

WPI Inflation declined to 21-Month Low of 5.85% In November 2022

  • According to the Commerce Ministry data, the Wholesale price inflation (WPI) for November 2022 has hit a 21-month low and reduced to 5.85% from 8.39% in October 2022.
  • Decline in the rate of inflation in November 2022, is primarily contributed by fall in prices of food articles, basic metals, textiles, chemicals & chemical products and paper & paper products as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year.
  • Inflation in food articles in November was 1.07 percent against 8.33 percent in the previous month.
  • Inflation in vegetables was (-) 20.08 percent during the month compared to 17.61 percent in October.
  • In the ‘Fuel and power’ basket, inflation was 17.35 percent, while in manufactured products, it was 3.59 percent in November.
  • On a yearly basis, WPI inflation went down from 14.87% in November 2021 to 5.85 percent in November 2022.

Canara HSBC Life Insurance launches Non-Participating ‘Guaranteed Fortune Plan

  • Canara HSBC Life Insurance has launched a new ‘Guaranteed Fortune Plan’, a non-linked, non-participating individual savings scheme.
  • The product launched offers two plan options: Guaranteed Savings Option and Guaranteed Cash Back Option.
  • The first option provides a lump sum on outliving the policy term.
  • The second option offers customers guaranteed cashback at the end of every fifth policy year, with an opportunity to defer the amount till maturity or withdraw it earlier.
  • The plan also includes a unique feature called CARE Pay Benefit. This in-built benefit pays 100 per cent of total premiums paid (excluding underwriting extra premiums and taxes) on intimation of death.

Bank of Baroda proposed to sell its majority stake in Nainital Bank

  • State-owned Bank of Baroda (BoB) plans to sell its majority stake in Nainital Bank.
  • The board of directors of the bank has approved the divestment of its majority shareholding in Nainital Bank Limited (NBL), and authorized the issuance of an advertisement inviting Expressions of Interest (EOI) through a Preliminary Information Memorandum (PIM) from interested parties (IPs).
  • Presently, the bank holds 98.57% of the total equity share capital of Nainital Bank Limited.
  • The Mumbai-based Bank of Baroda had taken over Nainital Bank in 1973 on the directions of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
  • Uttarakhand-based Nainital Bank has about 150 branches across Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, and Rajasthan.

Jeremy Farrar appointed as new Chief Scientist of WHO

  • Jeremy Farrar has been appointed as the new Chief Scientist of the World Health Organization (WHO) and will join WHO in the second quarter of 2023.
  • He has replaced Soumya Swaminathan who served as Chief Scientist from 2019 to 2022.
  • Presently, he is serving as the Director of the Wellcome Trust.
  • The appointment comes even as the top scientists and administrations in the United Kingdom, United States, and the European Union come under intense scrutiny for their messaging and handling of Covid-19.

Indian film RRR bags two Golden Globe Award nominations

  • SS Rajamouli-directed period movie ‘RRR’ has been nominated in two categories at the Golden Globe Awards to be held in January 2023.
  • The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has nominated ‘RRR’.
  • The film has been nominated in two categories for Best Non-English Language Film and the film’s song ‘Naatu-Naatu’ for Best Original Song.
  • Recently, director SS Rajamouli has also received the New York Film Critics Circle Best Director Award for the film.
  • RRR is the only Indian film to make the final five out of a clutch of other entries from India, among them Gangubai Kathiawadi, Kantara and Chhello Show.

India & Kazakhstan joint military exercise KAZIND 2022 begins in Umroi, Meghalaya

  • The 6th Edition of India and Kazakhstan joint training exercise “KAZIND-22” starts at Umroi, Meghalaya from 15 to 28 December 2022.
  • A joint annual training exercise with the Kazakhstan Army was instituted in 2016 as Exercise Prabal Dostyk, which was later upgraded to a company-level exercise and renamed as Ex Kazind in 2018.
  • Kazakhstan Army soldiers comprising of troops from the Regional Command, South and Indian Army soldiers from the 11 Gorkha Rifles will be participating in the exercise.
  • The scope of this exercise involves a Command Post Exercise (CPX) at the Battalion level and Company level Field Training Exercise (FTX) on sub-conventional operations.

  • The 13th edition of the bilateral exercise between the Indian navy and the Royal Oman navy Naseem Al Bahr-2022 organized on the coast of Oman.
  • India-Indonesia joint exercise ‘Garuda Shakti’ kicks off in Karawang, Indonesia

Messi announced retirement after Qatar FIFA 2022

  • Argentina football player Lionel Messi has confirmed that he will retire after the FIFA World Cup 2022 final on December 18.
  • He also became their highest goal scorer in the FIFA World Cup finals recently.
  • The 35-year-old is playing at his fifth World Cup, surpassing the four of Diego Maradona and Javier Mascherano.
  • Argentina have not won the World Cup since Diego Maradona led La Albiceleste to glory in 1986.
  • Messi came close in 2014 but lost to Germany in extra time. Now, Argentina are once again in the final of the tournament after eight years.

Iga Swiatek named WTA Player of the Year for 2022

  • World number one Iga Swiatek (Poland) was crowned 2022 Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Player of the Year for the first time in her career.
  • While Barbora Krejcikova (Czech Republic) and Katerina Siniakova (Czech Republic) were named Doubles Team of the Year.
  • Swiatek went on a superb 37-match winning run and won the French and U.S. Opens as well as titles at Doha, Indian Wells, Miami, Stuttgart, Rome, and San Diego.
  • Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil was named the Most Improved Player of the Year after breaking into the top 20.
  • Germany’s Tatjana Maria was named the Comeback Player of the Year.
  • While China’s Zheng Qinwen was named Newcomer of the Year.

India won 6 gold medals at 19th International Junior Science Olympiad

  • India secured the top rank at the 19th International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) 2022 held in Bogota, Colombia by winning 6 gold medals.
  • In all, 20 gold, 42 silver, and 59 bronze medals were awarded at this IJSO.
  • Arittra Malhotra, Rajdeep Mishra, Devesh Pankaj Bhaiya, Banibrata Majee, and Avaneesh Bansal were the students who bagged gold medals at the IJSO 2022, Bogota.
  • There were 203 students from 35 countries participating in this year’s IJSO. This year’s competition was originally scheduled to be held in Kyiv, Ukraine; it was shifted to Bogota, Colombia in August 2022 due to the war in Ukraine.
  • This was the last international Olympiad of 2022.

Sridhar breaks national record at FINA World Swimming Championship

  • Indian swimmer Siva Sridhar broke the national record in the men’s 200m individual medley heats at the Short Course World Championships in Melbourne.
  • Siva clocked 1:59.80s to finish first in heat 1 at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.
  • South Africa’s Matthew Sates won the championship in 1:50.15s with USA’s Carson Foster (1:50.96) and Canada’s Finlay Knox (1:51.04) winning silver and bronze, respectively.
