Southern Railway achieves 100% electrification after 95 years
- Southern Railway 100% electrification: Southern Railway has achieved 100 per cent electrification of its Broad Gauge (BG) network, covering 5,068 route kilometres (RKM) across the zone. The milestone was achieved after the completion of electrification work on the final 71-km-long Pattukkottai-Karaikkudi section. The statutory inspection of the newly electrified section was completed on September 9.
- Entire BG network electrified, trains can operate on electric traction across Southern Railway without the need for traction change at relevant points. This can help streamline operations and improve the utilisation of electric locomotives.
Bihar Signs UAE Partnership to Develop Food Processing Park
- The Bihar Industries Department has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the AIM Global Foundation to promote a dedicated food processing park in Bihar and attract investment from the UAE and wider Gulf region.
- The partnership aims to develop an integrated agri-food and food processing cluster in Bihar. The proposed food processing park is expected to strengthen connections between farmers, industries and global supply chains.

Axis Bank Launches Sparsh Week 2026 with Theme ‘Act with Speed’
- Axis BankLimited launched 4th edition of the Sparsh Week, its flagship nationwide customer engagement initiative themed “Act with Speed,” held from September 7 to 11, 2026 across India, with over 90 leaders participating from Kashmir (Jammu and Kashmir, J&K) to Kanyakumari (Tamil, Nadu, TN) and Kutch (Gujarat) to Kohima (Nagaland).
- The initiative aims to conduct more than 2.5 lakh customer interactions across diverse touchpoints, accelerating feedback into faster action through digital innovation and enhanced engagement platforms.

UNESCO International Literacy Prizes 2026 reward six impactful initiatives
- Six outstanding literacy programmes from Colombia, Lebanon, Mexico, Netherlands, Nigeria and Thailand have been awarded the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes for their exceptional contributions to advancing literacy across the globe.
- These awards were presented during the International Literacy Day global celebration, organised by UNESCO in collaboration with the government of Mexico on September 8 and 9 in the State of Chiapas, Mexico.
- Since 1967, UNESCO’s International Literacy Prizes have rewarded more than 600 individuals, organisations and institutions for the excellence, innovation and impact of their field initiatives to advance literacy worldwide.

Himalaya Diwas 2026 : September 9
- Himalaya Diwas, or Himalaya Day, is observed annually across India on 9 September to raise awareness about the importance of the Himalayan mountain range and the need to protect its fragile ecosystem.
- Himalaya Diwas was first observed in Uttarakhand in 2010 through an initiative led by environmentalists including Sunderlal Bahuguna, Anil Prakash Joshi and Radha Behen.

World First Aid Day 2026: 12 September
- World First Aid Day is an annual global event that raises awareness about the importance of first aid.

- Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies around the world launched World First Aid Day in 2000. Since then, it has grown into a global event, where we celebrate and promote the humanitarian mission of teaching first aid so people can act in emergencies.

Obituary
Veteran Tamil scholar, Orator and Padma Shri Awardee Solomon Pappaiah Passed Away
- Solomon Pappaiah, the legendary Tamil scholar, orator, actor and television personality who transformed the centuries-old art of Pattimandram from an academic exercise into a living-room tradition for millions of Tamil-speaking people, died at a private hospital in Madurai at the age of 90 on 12 Sept 2026.
- Solomon Pappaiah was a recipient of Padma Shri. The civic body has announced that Pappaiah, who was also an orator, will be honoured by naming the street where he resided after him.
