- Government e Marketplace (GeM) celebrated its Incorporation Day 2026 on 16 May, highlighting its role in making public procurement more transparent, efficient and inclusive.
- GeM SPV, a Section 8 company under the Ministry of Commerce, was incorporated on 17 May 2017 to manage India’s digital procurement platform and promote ease of doing business through technology-driven governance.
- The platform aligns with national initiatives like Aatmanirbhar Bharat, Vocal for Local and Viksit Bharat 2047, supporting domestic enterprises including MSEs, startups, women-led and SC/ST entrepreneurs.

- Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated India’s first AI-powered ‘phygital’ banking branch of Slice Small Finance Bank in Guwahati, marking a major step in digital-first banking innovation.
- The new branch combines physical and digital banking services through AI-enabled self-service kiosks, paperless cash deposits and withdrawals, and fully digital onboarding processes.
- The initiative aims to improve financial inclusion by providing access to credit, savings, and payment services for individuals and small businesses, especially in underserved communities across Assam.

- Narendra Modi was presented with the historic 11th-century Chola Copper Plates by Leiden University during his official visit to the Netherlands, marking a key moment in cultural cooperation and heritage restitution.
- The Leiden Copper Plates, preserved for over a century, include 21 large and 3 small copper plates linked to Chola kings Rajendra Chola I and Kulottunga Chola I, with inscriptions in Sanskrit and Tamil detailing administration, taxation, and governance systems.
Tata Electronics Partners with ASML to Boost Semiconductor Manufacturing in India
- Tata Electronics and Dutch semiconductor equipment giant ASML have entered into a strategic partnership to boost semiconductor manufacturing in India.
- The agreement was announced during the official visit of Narendra Modi to the Netherlands, highlighting growing India–Europe technology cooperation.
- Under this partnership, ASML will support the setup and scaling of Tata Electronics’ upcoming 300 mm semiconductor fabrication plant (Fab) at Dholera, Gujarat, strengthening India’s chip manufacturing ecosystem.
UIDAI Extends Free Aadhaar Document Update Service Till June 2027
- Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has extended the free online document update service on the myAadhaar portal for one more year.
- Aadhaar users can now update their identity proof and address proof documents online free of cost till June 14, 2027.
- The initiative aims to encourage Aadhaar holders to keep their demographic details updated for better authentication and service delivery.
West Bengal Govt. Approves ‘Annapurna Bhandar’ Scheme and Clears Formation of 7th Pay Commission
- The Government of West Bengal cabinet approved the “Annapurna Bhandar” scheme, under which eligible women will receive monthly financial assistance of ₹3,000 starting from June 1.
- The state cabinet also gave in-principle approval for the formation of the 7th Pay Commission for state government employees to review salary and pension structures.
- The government decided to discontinue several religion-based direct benefit transfer schemes from June 1, including honorariums provided earlier to imams, muezzins, and purohits.

Kami Rita Sherpa Creates History with Record 32nd Ascent of Mount Everest
- Nepali mountaineer Kami Rita Sherpa created history by climbing Mount Everest for a record 32nd time, breaking his own record for the most ascents of the world’s highest peak.
- Born in Solukhumbu district of Nepal, Kami Rita Sherpa began his mountaineering career in 1992 and first successfully summited Everest in 1994, completing his 31st ascent last year.
- Another climber, Lhakpa Sherpa, extended her record as the first Nepali woman to summit Everest by completing her 11th successful ascent of the peak.

Saurabh Vijay Takes Charge as CEO of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI)
- Saurabh Vijay has assumed charge as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). He is a 1998-batch IAS officer from the Maharashtra cadre.
- Before joining UIDAI, Saurabh Vijay served as Principal Secretary (Expenditure) in the Finance Department of the Government of Maharashtra and earlier held key positions in planning, tourism, medical education, and higher & technical education departments.
- He has also served in important national and international roles, including Director at the President’s Secretariat in New Delhi and Advisor to the Executive Director representing Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, and Sri Lanka at the World Bank
