National News

Amit Shah inaugurated Mega Dairy at Mandya, Karnataka

  • Union Home and Cooperation Minister, Amit Shah has inaugurated Mega Dairy at Mandya in Karnataka.
  • The mega-dairy inaugurated at a cost of Rs 260 crore would process 10 lakh liters of milk per day and will have the capacity to increase it up to 14 lakh liters per day.
  • Currently, there are 15,210 village-level cooperative dairies in Karnataka, in which about 26.22 lakh farmers deliver their milk daily and through 16 district-level dairies, Rs 28 crore is deposited into the accounts of 26 lakh farmers every day.
  • The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) will get all technical support and cooperation from Amul.
  • The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and the Ministry of Cooperation will establish a primary dairy in every panchayat of the country in the next three years.

PM Modi flagged off West Bengal’s first Vande Bharata Express train

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has virtually flagged off Vande Bharat Express from Howrah Railway Station connecting Howrah to New Jalpaiguri.
  • It is the first Vande Bharat Express to operate in West Bengal and on the Eastern parts of the country. Also, it is the seventh Vande Bharat train by Indian Railways in the country.
  • Covering a distance of 564 km in 7.45 hours, this train will save three hours in travel time as compared to other trains on the route.
  • He also inaugurated the Joka-Taratala Stretch of the Joka-Esplanade Metro Project (Purple Line) of Kolkata Metro.

India’s first underwater metro to become operation by December 2023

  • According to the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation, India’s first underwater metro service, the East-West Metro Corridor project is expected to be completed by December 2023.
  • The East-West corridor of the Kolkata Metro is 15 Km-long and spans from Salt Lake Stadium to Howrah.
  • This metro line between Salt Lake Sector-5 to Salt Lake Stadium has Karunamayi, Central Park, City Center, and Bengal Chemical metro stations.
  • It costs about ₹120 crore per kilometre to build the tunnel but the manufacturing cost of the tunnel underwater, which is deep in the Hooghly river costs increased to around 157 crores by per kilometre.
  • First metro in India, Kolkata Metro which started its operation 24 October 1984 between Dum Dam to Tollygunge. It was started with the help of the Soviet Union.
  • Largest metro rail in operation in India, Delhi Metro (390.14 km). It started operation on 24 December 2002.

Pralhad Joshi inaugurated Rs 300 crore Angul-Balram rail line in Odisha

  • Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi inaugurated the Rs 300 crore Angul-Balram rail line connecting Odisha’s Talcher Coalfield.
  • The 14-km-long Angul-Balram rail link is the first phase of a total 68-km inner corridor connecting Angul with Putugadia, Jarapada, and Tentuloi, which will cater to coal mines of Talcher coalfields.
  • The project was constructed by Mahanadi Coal Railway Ltd, a joint venture entity of MCL, IRCON International Ltd, and IDCO, an industrial infrastructure development agency of the Odisha government.
  • The internal corridor is being implemented by Mahanadi Coal Railway Ltd (MCRL) in two phases.
  • In phase two, the Balram-Putugadia-Jarapada-Tentuloi rail link would be completed.
  • The project is likely to enable Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) to increase its daily dispatch of coal by around 40,000 tonnes.

Ministry of Rural Development launched Prajjwala Challenge

  • Rural Development Ministry has launched Prajjwala Challenge inviting ideas, solutions, and actions to transform the rural economy.
  • It was launched under Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM).
  • It is one of the platforms where ideas are invited from individuals, Social Enterprises, Start Up, Private Sector, Community Based organizations, Incubation centres, and Investors having the potential to transform the rural economy.
  • Focus areas under challenge are Inclusive Growth, Value Chain Interventions, and Enhanced Women Entrepreneurship.
  • The top 5 ideas will be rewarded with Rs 2 Lakh each.

Asian Development Bank provides $100 million loans to Shriram Finance Limited

  • Non-banking financial company Shriram Finance Ltd. has secured long-term funding of $100 million from Asian Development Bank (ADB) to finance its purchase of new and used vehicles across India.
  • The loan amount will be used by Shriram Finance to provide loans to customers to buy new or used BS VI-compliant vehicles and electric vehicles”, besides providing financial support to women entrepreneurs and under-developed states.
  • Shriram Finance Limited is the largest retail NBFC in India. It was formed after the merger of mainly Shriram City Union Finance and Shriram Transport Finance.

Government hikes interest rates on small savings schemes

  • Government has increased interest rates on various small savings schemes for the fourth quarter of the current Financial Year starting from 1st January 2023.
  • The interest rate of five year National Saving Certificate has been increased to 7 percent from 6.8 percent.
  • The interest rate on the senior citizen saving scheme increased to 8 percent from 7.6 percent. The Monthly Income Account Saving has also been increased to 1 percent from 6.7 percent.
  • The interest rate on Kisan Vikas Patra will now be 7.2 percent from 7 percent and will mature in 120 months.
  • The interest rate of small savings deposit of one year time period has been increased to 6 percent from 5.5 percent.
  • However, the interest rate on the Public Provident Fund scheme, Sukanya Samriddhi Account Scheme, and Saving Deposit have been kept unchanged.

Ajit Kumar Saxena appointed as Chairman & MD of MOIL

  • Ajit Kumar Saxena has been appointed as the Chairman-Cum-Managing Director of the public sector enterprise MOIL Limited.
  • Prior to this assignment, Shri Saxena held the position of director (Operations) at RINL-Vishakhapatnam Steel Plant.
  • He started his career as a management trainee (Technical) in Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) in 1986 and thereafter, held various positions during his long tenure in SAIL such as chief general manager, Mills, IISCO, Burnpur, and general manager, Bhilai Steel Plant, etc.

About MOIL

  • MOIL is one of the largest manganese ore producers of the country.
  • MOIL is a Schedule “A” Miniratna Category-I Company under the Union Ministry of Steel.
  • It was originally incorporated as Manganese Ore (India) Limited in 1962 and its name was changed to MOIL Limited during 2010-11.

N Chandrasekaran appointed as head of Maharashtra government advisory council

  • The Maharashtra government has appointed Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran as the head of the new Economic Advisory Council of Maharashtra.
  • This was announced by deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis in the state Legislative Council in Nagpur.
  • The Maharashtra government has set up the Economic Advisory Council, to make Maharashtra a trillion-dollar economy.
  • The new advisory council will function as a private research organization that will focus on issues related to agriculture, banking, engineering, and education, among others.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a target of India becoming a $5 trillion economy by 2024-25.

Sundararaman Ramamurthy appointed as MD & CEO of BSE

  • Sundararaman Ramamurthy has been appointed as the Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Limited
  • He has been appointed for a five-year term with effect from January 4.
  • In November, BSE received consent from regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to appoint Ramamurthy as MD and CEO of the exchange.
  • The position has been vacant since July when the then MD and CEO Ashishkumar Chauhan resigned from the post to join the National Stock Exchange (NSE). He was appointed as MD and CEO of NSE, in late July.
  • Sundararaman Ramamurthy has over 20 years of work experience in the National Stock Exchange of India Limited (NSE) as a senior member of its team since its inception.

  • Former world rapid champion Koneru Humpy has won India’s first-ever Silver medal in the FIDE World Blitz Chess Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
  • Humpy defeated China’s Zhongyi Tan to win Silver in the 17th and final round.
  • Fourth-seeded Humpy scored an impressive 12.5 points, just half a point behind the gold medal winner Bibisara Balabayeva of Kazakhstan.
  • Humpy is the second Indian to win a medal at World Blitz, after Viswanathan Anand.

Hockey Madhya Pradesh clinched Khelo India Youth Games 2022 Men’s U-18 title

  • In hockey, Madhya Pradesh clinched the title by defeating Odisha 6-5 in the Khelo India Youth Games 2022 Men’s Under-18 qualifier title in Bhubaneswar.
  • Jamir Mohammad was the star of the final, scoring a hat-trick, while Ali Ahmed, Mohammad Zaid Khan, and Captain Ankit Pal scored one goal each for Madhya Pradesh.
  • Haryana claimed third place in the competition with a win against Jharkhand 2-0 in the 3rd and 4th place clash. Amandeep and Roshan scored goals for Haryana.
  • With this, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Haryana, and Jharkhand have qualified for the Khelo India Youth Games to be held in Madhya Pradesh next year.

Hockey Haryana Women’s U-18 team won Khelo India Youth Games 2022

  • Hockey Haryana’s women’s team has won the Khelo India Youth Games 2022 Women’s Under 18 Qualifiers after defeating Madhya Pradesh 2-0 in the final at Bhubaneswar.
  • In the final match, Pooja and Gurmail Kaur scored a goal each for Haryana to end the contest in their favour.
  • Odisha stepped up to claim third place after beating Hockey Jharkhand 2-1 in the 3rd and 4th place encounter.
  • Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Jharkhand have qualified for the Khelo India Youth Games to be held in Madhya Pradesh next year.
