Government raises authorized capital of FCI from Rs 10,000 cr to Rs 21,000 cr
- The government of India has increased the authorized capital of state-run Food Corporation of India (FCI) from ₹10,000 crore to ₹21,000 crore to enhance the operational capabilities and fulfill its mandate effectively.
- FCI is the central government’s nodal agency that undertakes the procurement of foodgrains at a minimum support price (MSP) to protect the interest of farmers. It also maintains strategic stocks and distributes the grains under different welfare schemes.
- The increase in the authorized capital will reduce the interest burden, decrease the economic cost and ultimately affecting the government subsidy positively.
- These measures are essential not only for reducing post-harvest losses but also for ensuring efficient distribution of food grains to consumers.
About FCI
- The Food Corporation of India (FCI) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.
- It was set up in 1965 following the enactment of the Food Corporation Act, 1964.
- It was set up in 1965 with its initial headquarters at Chennai. Later this was moved to New Delhi.
Govt launches ‘Sagar Aankalan’ guidelines to boost efficiency, competitiveness

- Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has launched the ‘Sagar Aankalan’ guidelines for the Indian port performance index to boost their efficiency and improve competitiveness.
- The ‘Sagar Aankalan’ guidelines for National Benchmarking of Indian Ports Performance will be enforced across all seaports in India, with goal of boosting their efficiency and competitiveness.
- India has 13 major ports – Deendayal (Kandla), Mumbai, Mormugao, New Mangalore, Cochin, Chennai, Ennore (Kamarajar), Tuticorin (V O Chidambaranar), Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Kolkata (including Haldia) and Jawaharlal Nehru Port.
- The Union shipping ministry has also drawn up an action plan to speed up the implementation of agreements signed at the Global Maritime India Summit 2023.
- During GMIS 2023, 360 MoUs were signed with an investment commitment of Rs 8.35 lakh crore and the announcement of additional investible projects worth Rs 1.68 lakh crore.

- Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid the foundation stone of Shri Kalki Dham temple in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal.
- The construction of Shri Kalki Dham is overseen by the Shri Kalki Dham Nirman Trust, led by its chairman Acharya Pramod Krishnam.
- The Prime Minister also inaugurate over 14,000 projects valued at more than ₹10 lakh crore across the state.
- These projects stem from investment proposals received during the UP Global Investors Summit 2023 (UPGIS 2023) held the previous year.

11th International Puppet Festival begins in Chandigarh
- The 11th International Puppet Festival was inaugurated at Tagore Theatre in Chandigarh.
- The festival’s inauguration was presided over by the Governor of Punjab and Administrator UT Chandigarh, Banwarilal Purohit, along with Rajeev Verma, Adviser to the Administrator.
- The festival started with a mesmerizing performance by the Novosibirsk Regional Puppet Theatre from Russia, presenting the renowned puppet show “Petrushka.”

Bandhan Bank authorized to collected revenues of West Bengal govt
- Private lender Bandhan Bank has been authorized by the West Bengal government to collect tax and non-tax receipts on its behalf.
- The mandate will enable the bank to collect revenues through the Government Receipt Portal System (GRIPS).
- By virtue of this mandate, people will be able to pay various taxes like property tax, motor vehicle tax and professional tax using this portal.
- GRIPS is an online internet-based platform for making various tax and non-tax payments to the West Bengal government.

KVS Manian appointed as JMD of Kotak Mahindra Bank

- KVS Manian has been appointed as the Joint Managing Director of Kotak Mahindra Bank, with effect from 1 March.
- Manian was serving as the whole-time Director and key managerial personnel of the bank.
- Shanti Ekambaram, who is currently a whole-time Director, has been appointed as the Deputy MD with effect from March 1, 2024.
- The current Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Devang Gheewalla has been appointed as the President and Group Chief Financial Officer with effect from April 1, 2024.
- The bank has appointed Milind Nagnur as the Chief Operating Officer of the Bank, with effect from April 1, 2024. He is currently the Chief Technology Officer of the Bank.
- Another member, Paul Parambi, currently the Chief Risk Officer of the Bank, has been promoted to the position of Group Chief Risk Officer with effect from March 1, 2024.

Shubman Gill designated as Punjab ‘state icon’ for Lok Sabha polls

- The Punjab Chief Electoral Officer’s office has designated Indian cricketer Shubman Gill as a “state icon” for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
- Gill will engage in various campaigns aimed at voter awareness to ensure a voting percentage of 70 per cent.
- The poll panel has set the target of “Is Vaar 70 Paar”.
- Punjab had recorded a voter turnout of 65.96 in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls for the 13 seats.

NASA, Japan to launch world’s 1st wooden satellite soon

- Japan and the US are planning to launch the world’s first wooden satellite, the LingnoSat, into space in 2024.
- This unusual spacecraft is made up of Magnolia wood which, during the experiments, was found to be particularly stable and resistant to cracking.
- The wooden satellite was created by Japanese scientists and now the US has become a part of their mission as they finalized the satellite to be launched on a US rocket.
- The researchers at Kyoto University in collaboration with the logging company Sumitomo Forestry built the timber satellite. They came up with the idea of using an alternative to metal, which are biodegradable material.

North Korea launched new surface-to-sea missiles
- North Korea test-launched the new surface-to-sea missiles, “Padasuri-6”.
- The missile hit a target after launch over waters in the East Sea for around 1400 seconds, or 23 minutes and 20 seconds.
- The missile seems to be designed to counter the naval capabilities of South Korea and the United States, such as U.S. aircraft carriers.

India women clinch Badminton Asia Team Championships title

- India women’s badminton team scripted history in Selangor Malaysia as they won the Badminton Asia Team Championships crown, beating Thailand 3-2 in a hard-fought final.
- This is the first time India have won the prestigious continental team championship title in the history of the sport.
- PV Sindhu, Gayatri Gopichand-Treesa Jolly and teenage sensational Anmol Kharb won their respective matches as India won the final 3-2 in Shah Alam.
MS Dhoni Named Captain of IPL’s Greatest All-Time Team
- Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni was picked as the captain to lead the all-time greatest IPL side.
- The 15-member squad was selected by a panel of experts, including former legends Wasim Akram, Dale Steyn, Matthew Hayden, and Tom Moody, along with 70 other journalists.
- The top order consisted of Australian batter David Warner, Indian superstar Virat Kohli, and West Indian powerhouse Chris Gayle.
- While Kohli is the all-time leading run-scorer in IPL history with 7,263 runs, Warner is third and first among overseas batters with 6,397 runs.
- The middle order batters comprised Suresh Raina, AB de Villiers, Suryakumar Yadav, and MS Dhoni. Raina and De Villiers are fifth and sixth all-time among IPL runs, with strike rates of 136.73 and 151.68, respectively.
- Meanwhile, Dhoni is the seventh leading scorer with over 5,000 runs and has the most victories as captain with 133 wins, including five titles as CSK skipper.

- Mizoram Foundation Day is celebrated every year on February 20 to honour the northeastern state’s accomplishment of statehood in 1987.
- It was on this day that the Lushai Hills Autonomous District Council was raised to the status of a complete state, turning into the 23rd state of India.
- February 20 denotes the Statehood Day of both Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh.

- The history of the World Day of Social Justice is linked to 1995 when the Copenhagen Summit for the Cause of Social Development was conducted in Denmark.
- The summit then resulted in the Copenhagen Declaration and Programme of Action, which called to end the concerning issues such as poverty, unemployment, and discrimination in society.

South Africa all-rounder Mike Procter dies
- Legendary South Africa cricketer Mike Procter passed away at the age of 77.
- Procter scored a staggering 21,936 runs including 48 centuries and took 1417 wickets at 19.53 with 70 five-wicket hauls from 401 first-class games.
- After his playing days, Procter became a match referee, a position where controversy followed him. He was the referee at the Oval in 2006 when Pakistan forfeited the Test after the umpires penalised them for ball tampering.
- In 2008, he was the referee at Sydney and banned Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh for three matches on charges of racism – a decision which was overturned later.
- He stepped down from the post in 2008 and became South Africa’s convener of selector.
