PM Modi begins four-day Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan visit for SCO summit
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 28 August embarked on a four-day visit to Uzbekistan and the Kyrgyz Republic, during which he will hold bilateral talks with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and attend the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek.
- PM Modi will be on a State Visit to Uzbekistan on August 29-30 at the invitation of Mirziyoyev before travelling to Bishkek for the SCO summit on August 31 and September 1.
- Visit would focus on strengthening India’s strategic partnerships in Central Asia and deepening its ties with the region.
UP CM launches ‘Lokmata Ahilyabai Matrushakti Yatra’, women aged 60+ to get free bus travel
- Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on 27 August launched the ‘Lokmata Ahilyabai Matrushakti Yatra’ scheme and flagged off special buses to provide free travel facilities to women aged 60 years and and above in the state.
- Aimed: Making the journey of women more convenient and dignified and strengthening their self-reliance.

Air India partners with Drukair to expand India-Bhutan flight connectivity
- Air India has entered into an interline partnership with Bhutan’s flag carrier Drukair-Royal Bhutan Airlines to offer seamless travel across their networks and strengthen air connectivity between India and Bhutan.
- The arrangement also offers competitive interline fares, greater travel flexibility and improved connectivity. With the partnership, the airline now provides connectivity to nearly all countries in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) region through its own or partner network.

World Bank Group Appoints Yuko Keicho as Vice President and Auditor General
- The World Bank Group announced the appointment of Yuko Keicho (Japanese national) as Vice President and Auditor General.
- Keicho will lead the Internal Audit Vice Presidency, providing independent assurance and advisory services that support effective governance, accountability, risk management, and internal controls across the institution. She will report to World Bank Group President Ajay Banga and functionally to the Audit Committee.

Praggnanandhaa Becomes First Indian Grand Chess Tour Champion
- Praggnanandhaa has made history by becoming the first Indian to win the Grand Chess Tour after defeating the U.S. defending champion Fabiano Caruana 15–13 in the final held in St. Louis.
- The Grand Chess Tour is an elite circuit spanning Classical, Rapid and Blitz events with the world’s best players and a total prize pool of $2 million.
- After five gruelling tournaments, which include two Classical and three Rapid and Blitz events, the top four players qualify for the GCT finals, a knockout event where the year’s best compete for the title.

Indian Navy Receives First Indigenous Multi-Purpose Vessel ‘Samarthak’
- The Indian Navy has taken delivery of Samarthak, its first locally built Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV), constructed by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) at its Kattupalli shipyard near Chennai.
- The vessel was delivered on August 27. More than 75% of the vessel’s components are made in India. It will mainly be used to test and evaluate new naval weapons, sensors and other systems.
DRDO Successfully Tests Military Combat Parachute System at 22,000 Feet in Ladakh
- The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully tested its indigenous Military Combat Parachute System (MCPS) at the Nyoma-Mudh drop zone in Ladakh from an altitude of 22,000 feet.
Note:
- Location: Nyoma-Mudh drop zone, Ladakh (landing at 13,700 feet)
- Jump Altitude: 22,000 feet above mean sea level in temperatures of −15°C
- Deployment: Parachute deployed at 20,000 feet by test jumpers including Wg Cdr Rahul Jha, MWO R J Singh, and MWO Vivek Tiwari
- Developers: Designed by the Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE) in Agra and the Defence Bioengineering and Electromedical Laboratory (DEBEL) in Bengaluru
- Sub-systems: Utilized indigenous gear including a para computer, specialized jumpsuits, and an oxygen system
- System Specs: Designed for operations up to 32,000 feet with a payload capacity of up to 200 kg and NavIC compatibility

- Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat launched the biographical novel ‘Kaho Kalidasa!’ on August 25, 2026, at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) in New Delhi.
- Theme: The novel explores the lesser-known life and personality of the classical Sanskrit poet Mahakavi Kalidasa through five love stories inspired by his seven famous literary works.

World Sanskrit Day: 28 August 2026
- World Sanskrit Day, also known as Vishva Samskrita Dinam, is an annual observance celebrated on Shravana Purnima (the full moon day in the Hindu month of Shravana) to honor the Sanskrit language and promote its learning.
- Designated by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, in 1969 to encourage the revival and maintenance of Sanskrit.

Yayoi Kusama, Japan’s ‘queen of polka dots’, dies at 97
- Yayoi Kusama, the Japanese artist known for her polka-dot paintings, pumpkin sculptures and immersive “Infinity Mirror Rooms”, has died at the age of 97.
- Kusama was born in Matsumoto, Japan, on March 22, 1929. She became famous for polka dots, pumpkin sculptures and Infinity Mirror Rooms.
