Kerala CM inaugurated Indian Library Congress in Kannur, Kerala

  • Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has inaugurated Indian Library Congress at the Collectorate Ground in Kannur, Kerala.
  • The People’s Mission for Social Development and Library Council organized the event in association with Kannur University.
  • The program was presided over by Dr. V Shivdan, and Higher Education Minister Dr. R Bindu announced 100 new libraries to be dedicated to the Kannur district.
  • Representatives from Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Bihar, and other states and foreign countries are participating in the Indian Library Congress.

‘SMART’ programme launched to boost R&D in Ayurveda

  • Government of India has launched the ‘SMART’ (Scope for Mainstreaming Ayurveda Research in Teaching Professionals)
  • Objective – To boost scientific research in priority healthcare research areas through Ayurveda colleges and hospitals.
  • The SMART program has been jointly launched by the Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) and the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS). Both Institutions come under the Union Ministry of Ayush.
  • The ‘SMART’ program will have a deep longterm rejuvenating impact on research in the field of Ayurveda and it will be a great service to the nation.

India signed an agreement with Austria for migration and mobility 3

  • India and Austria have signed five agreements and two of them are in the interest of the Indian community living in Austria.
  • The two agreements would be in the interest of the Indian community.
  • There is an agreement on ‘Migration and Mobility’ for people who want to work in Austria and who want to come to India for business, or who come here as students and professionals.
  • Another agreement is on the ‘Working Holiday’ program that will enable Indian students in Austria to work for 6 months.
  • This is the first India-Austria EAM-level visit in the last 27 years which is taking place in 2023 against the backdrop of 75 years of diplomatic relations.

Election Commission’s launched ‘Mission-929’ to take voter turnout in Tripura to over 90

  • The Election Commission of India (ECI) has started ‘Mission 929’ in Tripura.
  • It will focus on 929 polling booths across Tripura with a target to increase the voter turnout to 92 percent in the next assembly elections.
  • These booths recorded a voter turnout of less than 89 percent, which was the average across 3,328 booths in the 2018 assembly polls.
  • To turn around the relatively low voting percentage in these booths, the EC has launched ‘Mission-929’. Apart from an awareness campaign, poll officials will visit senior citizens and persons with disability, and appeal them to cast their votes.
  • The EC is also working on ‘Mission Zero Poll Violence’ to make the assembly elections peaceful.

Coffee export increased by 1.66 % to 4 lakh tonne in 2022: Coffee Board of India

  • According to the Coffee Board of India, the total export of coffee from India rose by 1.66 percent to 4 lakh tonnes in 2022 mainly due to the increase in instant coffee exports and re-exports.
  • The total export in 2021 was at 3.93 lakh tonnes.
  • In value terms, coffee export was higher at Rs 8,762.47 crore in 2022 as against Rs 6,984.67 crore in the previous year.
  • Italy, Germany and Russia are the major export destinations for the Indian coffee.
  • India exports both Robusta and Arabica varieties of coffee and also instant coffee.
  • According to the Board’s the export of Robusta coffee declined marginally to 2, 20,974 tonnes in 2022 from 2, 20,997 tonnes in the previous year.
  • Similarly, export of Arabica fell 11.43 per cent to 44,542 tonnes from 50,292 tonnes.

India’s unemployment rate rises at 8.30% in Dec 2022

  • According to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), India’s unemployment rate in December 2022 has increased to a 16-month high at 8.30% from 8% in November 2022.
  • The urban unemployment rate has increased to 10.09% in December from 8.96% in the previous month, while the rural unemployment rate slipped to 7.44% from 7.55%.
  • The employment rate has increased in December to 37.1%, which again is the highest since January 2022.
  • The unemployment rate had declined to 7.2% in the July-September quarter compared to 7.6% in the previous quarter, according to separate quarterly data compiled by state run National Statistical Office (NSO) and released in November.
  • In December, the unemployment rate rose to 37.4% in the northern state of Haryana, followed by 28.5% in Rajasthan and 20.8% in Delhi.

PM Modi inaugurated 108th Indian Science Congress

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the 108th Indian Science Congress through video conferencing.
  • The focal theme of this year’s ISC is “Science and Technology for Sustainable Development with Women Empowerment”.
  • The first session of Congress was held in 1914.
  • The 108th annual session of ISC held at Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Maharashtra which is also celebrating its centenary this year.
  • The technical sessions of the 108th Indian Science Congress have been divided into 14 sections.

Jitendra Singh inaugurated Incubation Centre at NRDC

  • Union Minister for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh has inaugurated the Incubation Centre at the National Research Development Corporation (NRDC) in New Delhi to provide multi-prong support to StartUps.
  • NRDC has created incubating start-ups facility and is also promoting beneficial schemes to provide support in terms of funding, mentoring, IP assistance and other allied services to the Startups.
  • NRDC was established in 1953 with headquarters in Delhi.

Tripura signed agreement with ADB to improve Power Distribution Network

  • The Tripura government has signed an agreement with Asian Development Bank (ADB) amounting to Rs 2,275 crore to strengthen and improve power distribution efficiency in the north-eastern state
  • Of the Rs 2,275 crore fund, the central government will repay Rs 1,820 crore while the state is supposed to provide Rs 455 crore. The project will be implemented in the next three years.
  • At present, gas based Rukhia power project produces 66 MW power and its installed capacity will be doubled by modernizing the plant.
  • The Dumbur hydropower project’s capacity will be increased from 5 MW to 10 MW. The externally aided project will benefit five to six lakh consumers and it will also generate 6,000 to 6,500 direct jobs in different levels.

Gross GST collection in December goes up by 15% is ₹1.49 lakh.

  • The gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue collected in December 2022 is ₹1.49 lakh.
  • The GST revenues are 15 percent higher than the GST revenues in the same month last year.
  • The gross GST revenue collected during December 2022 is ₹1,49,507 crore, of which CGST is ₹26,711 crore, SGST is ₹33,357 crore, IGST is ₹78,434 crore (including ₹40,263 crore collected on import of goods) and cess is ₹11,005 crore (including ₹850 crore collected on import of goods).
  • The monthly GST revenues more than ₹1.4 lakh crore for 10 straight months in a row.
  • The government has settled ₹36,669 crore to CGST and ₹31,094 crore to SGST from IGST as regular settlement.
  • The total revenue of Centre and the States after regular settlements in the month of December 2022 is ₹63,380 crore for CGST and ₹64,451 crore for SGST.

Government starts process to buy 100 more K9-Vajras

  • The Defense Ministry has initiated the process to procure 100 more K-9 Vajra self-propelled howitzers, which are made in India by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) using technology transferred from South Korean defence major Hanwha Defence.
  • The K-9 Vajra is a 155 mm, 52-calibre tracked self-propelled howitzer built by L&T with technology transferred from South Korean defence major Hanwha Defence based on its K-9 Thunder.
  • The 100th gun was delivered to the Army in February 2021, the contract for which was signed in May 2017.
  • The contract also involved the maintenance transfer of technology to an Army base workshop to support the howitzers throughout their operational life cycle.
  • The K-9 Vajra was mainly bought for use in deserts, but the standoff prompted them to be deployed in the mountains as well.

1 January 2023 – 65th foundation day of DRDO

  • Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) celebrated its 65th foundation day on 1st January 2023.
  • It is a premier defence research and development agency under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India.
  • It is working on several cutting-edge military technology areas, including aeronautics, armaments, combat vehicles, electronics, instrumentation, engineering systems, missiles, materials, naval systems, advanced computing, simulation, cyber, hypersonic technology, quantum computing, and communications.
  • The DRDO was formed in 1958 from the amalgamation of the then-already functioning Technical Development Establishment (TDEs) of the Indian Army and the Directorate of Technical Development & Production (DTDP) with the Defence Science Organization (DSO).
  • DRDO was then a small organization with 10 establishments or laboratories. Over the years, it has grown multi-directionally in terms of the variety of subject disciplines, number of laboratories, achievements, and stature.


Tata group veteran R Krishnakumar passes away

  • Tata Group veteran and former Tata Sons director R Krishnakumar passed away recently at the age of 84.
  • He started working for Tata Administrative Services in 1963 and joined Tata Global Beverages in 1965.
  • He had also worked through Tata Global Beverages’ transformation into Tata Tea and became VP of South India Plantations in 1982.
  • He was honoured with India’s fourth highest civilian honour, Padma Shri in 2009 for contributions to the country’s trade and business.

Gujarat’s first woman chief secretary Manjula Subramaniam passes away

  • The first woman chief secretary of Gujarat, Manjula Subramaniam passed away recently in Vadodara. She was 74.
  • A Gujarat-cadre officer of the 1972 batch, Subramaniam was appointed as the first woman chief secretary of Gujarat in 2007. Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat then.
  • After retirement, she was appointed as chief vigilance commissioner of Gujarat.
  • She was also part of the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation.
