Tamil Nadu CM Vijay launches Vettri Payanam scheme, expanding no-fare bus travel for women

  • Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay launched the expanded Vetri Payanam Thittam on October 2, 2026, providing free bus travel for women and transgender persons across more than 12,690 government buses.
  • The expanded program aims to benefit roughly 84.32 lakh (8.43 million) passengers every day.
  • The scheme includes Ordinary, Express, Limited Stop Service (LSS), Deluxe, mofussil ordinary, and certain hill-route buses operated by state transport undertakings.

Gujarat Becomes Second State to Receive Presidential Assent for Uniform Civil Code

  • After Uttarakhand, Gujarat has become only the second state to receive the President’s assent to its version of the Uniform Civil Code, a set of rules that will govern civil matters like marriage, divorce and inheritance.
  • The landmark legislation replaces varied personal laws with a unified legal code governing marriage, divorce, succession, and live-in relationships for all citizens residing within the state.
  • However, the provisions do not apply to Scheduled Tribes, preserving constitutional protections for their customary rights. The Act also extends its jurisdiction to Gujarat residents living outside the state.
  • Rules: Under the law, mandatory registration forms a central pillar of the administrative reform. Marriages solemnised within Gujarat, or involving a state resident, must be formally registered within sixty days to avoid monetary penalties. Additionally, the legislation introduces formal legal procedures and required registration protocols for couples entering live-in relationships.

ICICI Lombard General Insurance Launches ‘VIBE’ Health Insurance Plan for GenZ

  • ICICI Lombard General Insurance has launched a new health protection proposition called VIBE, targeting young consumers with a product that combines hospitalisation cover, outpatient care, mental health support, teleconsultations, health screenings and lifestyle rewards under one plan.
  • The product is built on the company’s existing IL TakeCare platform and is designed as a mobile-first offering. VIBE comes in six plan variants, Rookie, BasicFit, Upgrade, Flex, GOAT and Value, with sum insured options ranging from ₹7 lakh to ₹1 crore.

Narendra Bhooshan assumes charge as Environment Secretary

  • Narendra Bhooshan, a 1992-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, has assumed charge as Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC).
  • Bhooshan brings more than three decades of administrative experience at the Central and state government levels, with experience across energy, infrastructure, industry, agriculture, urban development, finance and land-resource management.

Sidharatha Mishra appointed MD & CEO of ICICI Prudential Life

  • ICICI Prudential Life Insurance has appointed Sidharatha Mishra as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, effective October 14, or upon receipt of approval from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI), whichever is later, for a five-year term subject to requisite approvals.
  • Sidharatha Mishra will first take charge as Chief Operating Officer with effect from October 6. He succeeds Anup Bagchi, who is stepping down as MD & CEO with effect from the close of business hours on October 13, to take over as MD & CEO of HDFC Bank from October 27.

Petronet LNG names Sanjay Kumar as next MD and CEO from May 2027

  • Petronet LNG Limited’s board has approved the appointment of Sanjay Kumar, Director (Marketing) at GAIL (India) Limited, as the company’s next Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Sanjay Kumar will take charge on May 13, 2027.
  • Sanjay Kumar will succeed Akshay Kumar Singh, whose extended term as MD and CEO runs until May 12, 2027. Singh came to Petronet LNG from Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), where he was Director (Pipelines), and took charge on February 1, 2021, for a five-year term. Petronet LNG extended that term in January 2026.

Gujarat govt to honour Flydubai captain Smit Machchhar with ‘Vishisht Gujarat Garima Award

  • Gujarat govt will honour pilot Captain Smit Machchhar with ‘Vishisht Gujarat Garima Award’ for saving the lives of 174 passengers during an attack on a Flydubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv.
  • The award carries a cash prize of Rs 25 lakh and will be presented at a special felicitation event after Machchhar recovers from injuries sustained in the incident.

India Exported Akash Missile System to Tajikistan and Turkmenistan

  • India’s indigenous Akash air defence missile system has expanded its footprint into Central Asia, with Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh confirming that the system has been exported to Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, in addition to Armenia.
  • “The first customer was Armenia, which has taken multiple batteries. Thereafter, we’ve also exported it to Tajikistan and Turkmenistan,
  • About Akash: The Akash is an indigenous short range surface to air missile system developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to protect vulnerable areas and vulnerable points from aerial attacks.

Indian Army conducted Exercise Jai Se Vijay on NH-911

  • Exercise Jai Se Vijay was conducted by the Indian Army’s Sapta Shakti Command (South Western Command) on September 29, 2026, near the India–Pakistan International Border in Rajasthan.

Details of the Exercise

  • Location: A stretch of National Highway-911 (NH-911) near Dantour.
  • Objective: Test operational preparedness, rapid mobility, and the viability of using civilian dual-use infrastructure as alternative landing surfaces for military contingencies.
  • Helicopters Involved: Rudra (armed Advanced Light Helicopter), Dhruv (indigenous Advanced Light Helicopter), and Chetak.
  • Theme: “Mission Ready, Future Ready”

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and SkyPulse Solutions Sign MoU for Deployment of 30 Helicopters

  • Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and SkyPulse Solutions IFSC signed a memorandum of understanding on September 26, 2026, for a ₹2,491 crore program to finance, lease, and deploy 30 made-in-India helicopters.
  • Phase 1 (2027–2029): Acquisition of the first 10 helicopters, with initial induction planned in FY 2027–28.
  • Phase 2 (2030 onwards): Deployment of the remaining 20 helicopters.
  • Fleet Mix: Includes single-engine and twin-engine domestically manufactured platforms.
  • Location: Uses GIFT City IFSC in Gujarat for aviation leasing and financing structures.
  • Support: Covers lifecycle maintenance, training, and MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) capabilities.
