President unveiled the statue of Mahatma Gandhi and ‘Gandhi Vatika’ in New Delhi
- President Droupadi Murmu has unveiled a 12 feet high statue of the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi and a ‘Gandhi Vatika’ at Gandhi Darshan near Rajghat in New Delhi.
- To enhance the visitor experience, a selfie point has been established within Gandhi Vatika.
- The Gandhi Vatika features multiple statues of Mahatma Gandhi depicting him in various postures. Speaking on the occasion, the President said that Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals and values have given a new direction to the whole world.

The 2nd edition of Naval Commanders’ Conference 2023 begins in New Delhi
- The second edition of the Naval Commanders’ Conference 2023 began in New Delhi.
- The objective of the conference is to establish a structured platform for naval commanders to engage with senior government officials with a focus on taking forward various inter-ministerial initiatives aimed at ensuring a safe and secure maritime environment.
- The conference serves as the highest-level biennial event, which facilitates discussion and policy formulation among naval commanders.
- During the three-day conference, to be held in a hybrid format, the senior leadership of the Indian Navy will review major operational, material, logistics, training, and administrative activities undertaken during the last six months.
CCI approves merger of Vistara into Air India
- The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has approved the merger of Tata SIA Airlines into Air India, subject to certain conditions.
- This landmark merger also involves Singapore Airlines (SIA) and entails the acquisition of shares in the merged entity, Air India, subject to certain voluntary commitments.
- TSAL (Tata SIA Airlines Limited) is a joint venture between the Tata Group and Singapore Airlines with the former holding 51% and the latter 49%.
- As part of the merger transaction, SIA shall also invest Rs 2,059 crore in Air India. Post the consolidation, SIA shall hold 25.1% shareholding in Air India.
- The consolidation will make Air India India’s largest international carrier and second-largest domestic carrier.

- It promotes healthy market competition and prevents activities that have an adverse effect on competition in India.

RBI Governor rated ‘A+’ in Global Finance Central Banker Report 2023
- Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das has been ranked as the top central banker globally by US-based Global Finance magazine.
- Das has been rated ‘A+’ in the Global Finance Central Banker Report Cards 2023.
- Das is followed by Switzerland Governor Thomas J Jordan and central bank chief of Vietnam Nguyen Thi Hong.
- Das has been placed at the top of the list of three central bank governors who have been rated A+.
- Grades are based on a scale from A to F for success in inflation control, economic growth goals, currency stability, and interest rate management, according to a statement by Global Finance magazine.
- An ‘A’ represents an excellent performance down through an ‘F’ for outright failure.
- The report has been published annually by Global Finance since 1994.

PhonePe launches Share. Market app or buying and selling stocks
- PhonePe announced its foray into stock broking business with the launch of a new mobile application called ‘Share(dot)Market’, under its subsidiary PhonePe Wealth Broking.
- According to PhonePe, the Share(dot)Market app elevates discount broking by providing market intelligence and quantitative research-based Wealth Baskets, a scalable technology platform.
- It will be available as a mobile app and a dedicated web platform, enabling retail investors to buy stocks, engage in intra-day trades, and buy curated Wealth Baskets and mutual funds.
- In 2022, PhonePe acquired two wealth tech platforms, Wealth Desk and OpenQ, valued together at $70 million. This acquisition was part of PhonePe’s ongoing expansion into financial services beyond payments.
- Share(dot)Market app will provide a wide spectrum of investment products, including stocks (intraday and delivery), mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and Wealth Baskets.

Tharman Shanmugaratnam Wins Singapore Presidential Election
- Indian-origin economist Tharman Shanmugaratnam has emerged victorious in Singapore’s presidential election.
- Tharman Shanmugaratnam defeated two contenders of Chinese origin in the country’s first contested presidential polls since 2011.
- Tharman secured 70.4% of the votes, while Ng Kok Song and Tan Kin Lian received 15.7% and 13.88% respectively.
- The president-elect, Tharman, had served as Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister from 2011 to 2019.

Nasscom appoints Cognizant’s Rajesh Nambiar as Chairperson
- Chairman and Managing Director of Cognizant India, Rajesh Nambiar has been appointed as the Chairperson of the National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM).
- Nambiar takes on the new role from his previous role as Vice Chairperson succeeding Anant Maheshwari, Former President, of Microsoft India.
- Nambiar along with President Debjani Ghosh, will continue to work with the Nasscom Executive Council, industry, and the government in strengthening India’s position as a global technology hub while navigating the current volatile macro environment.

- Mohun Bagal Super Giant clinched the Durand Cup 2023 trophy beating East Bengal 1-0 at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata, West Bengal.
- With this victory, Mohun Bagan SG became the first team in Durand Cup history to win 17 titles.
- With 16 titles, East Bengal are the second-most successful team in the Durand Cup.

Ministry of Education observes Literacy Week from 1st to 8th September
- The Government of India has decided to organize a literacy week from 1st September to 8th September 2023 to celebrate International Literacy Day to generate awareness among all the stakeholders/ beneficiaries/ citizens about the ULLAS- Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram.
- The week-long literacy campaign shall enable mass participation to inculcate a sense of Kartavyabodh and Janbhagidari in each and every citizen of the nation.
- Another main objective will be to increase the number of registrations for learners and volunteers on the ULLAS mobile app.
5 September – National Teachers’ Day
- National Teachers’ Day in India is celebrated on September 5th every year.
- It is a day to honour and celebrate the contributions of teachers to the society.
- The day is also observed as a tribute to the memory of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the second President of India from 1962 to 1967.
- Radhakrishnan was a scholar, philosopher, and teacher. He was also a strong advocate for education and believed that teachers played a vital role in shaping the future of the nation.
- In 1962, when his students asked him to celebrate his birthday, he requested that they instead observe September 5th as Teachers’ Day.
