Amit Shah launched Bharat Taxi, India’s First Cooperative-Based Ride-Hailing Platform
- Bharat Taxi was launched by Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, marking India’s first cooperative-based ride-hailing platform.
- Registered under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002, Bharat Taxi was established on June 6, 2025 and follows a zero-commission, surge-free pricing model with profits directly shared with drivers (sarathis).
- Driver-centric model emphasises ownership and welfare, including share certificates, ₹5 lakh personal accident insurance, ₹5 lakh family health cover, retirement support, and social security benefits.
- Over 3 lakh drivers onboarded, 1 lakh+ users, 10,000+ daily rides across Delhi-NCR and Gujarat, ₹10 crore distributed to drivers, with nationwide expansion planned within two years.
NTH Partners with STQC-ERTL to Enable EMI–EMC Testing of Drones in India
- National Test House (NTH) partners with STQC-ERTL (North) under MeitY through a government-to-government collaboration to enable EMI/EMC testing of drones in India.
- Collaboration aims to support Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) testing, a critical requirement for drone safety and certification.
- Partnership strengthens India’s drone testing and certification ecosystem, boosting regulatory compliance and indigenous drone development.
India and Tanzania Hold 4th Joint Defence Cooperation Committee Meeting in Zanzibar
- India–Tanzania 4th Joint Defence Cooperation Committee (JDCC) meeting was held in Zanzibar, focusing on reviewing ongoing bilateral defence cooperation.
- Both sides discussed expanding collaboration in military training, maritime security, service-to-service cooperation, defence industry, and explored new areas like counter-terrorism, peacekeeping, EW, Cyber and AI.
Government Launches Digital Portal for Online Issuance of Certificates of Origin for Cultivated Medicinal Plants
- The National Biodiversity Authority (NBA), under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), has launched a digital portal for electronic issuance of Certificates of Origin for cultivated medicinal plants.
- The portal supports implementation of the Biological Diversity (Amendment) Act, 2023, enabling stakeholders to avail Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) exemptions in a transparent and streamlined manner.
- The initiative benefits multiple sectors including AYUSH, seed industry and research institutions, following the notification of Biological Diversity Rules in 2024 and 2025 to operationalise the amended Act.

Walmart Becomes World’s First Retailer to Cross $1 Trillion Market Valuation
- Walmart became the world’s first retail company to achieve a market valuation of $1 trillion, a milestone usually associated with technology giants, following a strong rally in its shares.
- With this achievement, Walmart joins the elite group of trillion-dollar companies such as Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Nvidia and Meta, highlighting its scale and global dominance in retail.
- Founded in 1962 in Arkansas, Walmart now operates around 4,600 stores across the US, went public in 1970, joined the Dow Jones Index in 1997, and remains a key constituent of the S&P 500.

World Bank Approves $830 Million Loan To Revamp India’s Skill Training Institutes
- World Bank approves $830 million loan to support the revamp of India’s skills training ecosystem, particularly the Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs).
- PM-SETU (Pradhan Mantri Skilling and Employability Transformation through Upgraded (ITIS) align training with labour market needs, and generates over one million skilled workers annually while improving low job placement rates.
- Project prepared jointly with the Asian Development Bank, with plans to mobilise at least $680 million in private sector investment; the loan has a 19.5-year maturity with a 4-year grace period.
- It is a centrally sponsored scheme. It was launched on 4th Oct 2025.
- Under the scheme, 1,000 government ITIs to be upgraded under a hub-and-spoke model, with 200 hub ITIs connected to 800 spoke ITIs to provide advanced infrastructure, innovation centres, placement support, and digital learning.
- Industry-led cluster management through Anchor Industry Partners and SPVs, with each hub serving about four spoke ITIs to ensure outcome-oriented and region-focused skill training.
New Insurance Act to Take Effect from Feb 5, Allows 100% FDI with Stronger Policyholder Protection
- New Insurance Laws to come into force from February 5, 2026, allowing 100% FDI in the insurance sector, except Section 25, as notified by the Finance Ministry.
- Sabka Bima Sabki Raksha (Amendment of Insurance Laws) Act, 2025 amends the Insurance Act, 1938, LIC Act, 1956 and IRDAI Act, 1999, while mandating that top leadership of insurance companies must be Indian citizens.
- Reforms aimed at boosting ease of doing business and policyholder protection, including higher limits for share transfer approval, reduced capital norms for foreign reinsurers, LIC autonomy, creation of a Policyholders’ Education and Protection Fund, and stronger regulatory powers for IRDAI.

IOC Elects Soraya Aghaei as First Female Member from Iran
- Soraya Aghaei has been elected as the first female IOC member from Iran, becoming the youngest current member and the 107th member of the International Olympic Committee, elected by a 95–2 vote.
- A former Iranian badminton Olympian at Tokyo 2020, Aghaei is only the third Iranian representative at the IOC and the first since 2004, marking a significant milestone for Iran’s presence in the global Olympic body.
- Her election comes under the leadership of IOC’s first female President, Kirsty Coventry, with women now forming 45% of IOC membership, reflecting greater gender representation in the organisation.
- Aghaei will serve an eight-year term, during which she will participate in key decisions, including voting for the host city of the 2036 Summer Olympics.

Indian-Origin Climate Scientist Veerabhadran Ramanathan Wins 2026 Crafoord Prize in Geosciences
- Indian-origin climate scientist Veerabhadran Ramanathan has won the 2026 Crafoord Prize in Geosciences, often called the “Nobel of Geosciences”, for his groundbreaking work on climate science.
- He is globally known for discovering in 1975 that CFCs trap heat up to 10,000 times more effectively than CO₂ and for his research on atmospheric brown clouds through the Indian Ocean Experiment (INDOEX).
- The award, given by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, includes 8 million Swedish kronor and a gold medal, and his research has significantly influenced global climate agreements like the Montreal Protocol.

Paradip Port Authority Wins Swachhata Pakhwada Award 2025
- Paradip Port Authority (PPA) won the First Prize at the Swachhata Pakhwada Awards 2025, conferred by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, for excellence in cleanliness, sustainability and community participation under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
- The award was presented in New Delhi by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and was received by P. L. Haranadh, Chairman, PPA, in the presence of senior officials of the Ministry.
- PPA effectively implemented the three core pillars of Swachhata Pakhwada 2025—Jan Bhagidari, Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam (including plantation of 40,000 saplings at Paradip Sea Beach), and Safai Mitra Suraksha, focusing on public participation, environmental sustainability and sanitation workers’ welfare.
Bhutan Queen Mother conferred ‘Soldier of Humanity’ award in Assam
- Bhutan’s Queen Mother Gyalyum Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck was conferred the 22nd Upendra Nath Brahma ‘Soldier of Humanity’ Award 2025 at Bodoland University, Kokrajhar, Assam.
- The award was presented by the Upendra Nath Brahma Trust (UNBT) in recognition of her lifelong contributions to humanitarian service, social development and inclusive growth.
- The honour includes a citation, statuette of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma, traditional Bodo artefacts, and a cash prize of ₹2 lakh.

INS Sudarshini Makes First International Port Call at Salalah During Lokayan 26 Expedition
- INS Sudarshini makes its first international port call at Salalah, Oman, during the transoceanic expedition Lokayan 26.
- Lokayan 26 expedition began on 20 January 2026, undertaken by the Indian Navy’s sail training ship INS Sudarshini.
- The 10-month voyage will cover over 22,000 nautical miles, with visits to 18 foreign ports across 13 countries.
