19th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas Convention to be held in Kolkata from January 7-9, 2027
- The 19th edition of the Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas (PBD) Convention will be held in Kolkata, West Bengal, from January 7 to 9, 2027.
- The three-day convention will be organised by the MEA in partnership with the West Bengal government and will bring together members of the Indian diaspora and other stakeholders from across the world.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the convention, while President Droupadi Murmu will confer the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards and preside over the valedictory session.
- The convention will also feature a Youth PBD segment, with young diaspora leaders expected to participate alongside entrepreneurs, professionals, academics, innovators and other members of the Indian diaspora.
- The Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas is observed on January 9 to commemorate the return of Mahatma Gandhi to India from South Africa on January 9, 1915.
- The 19th edition of the flagship diaspora engagement event will build on previous editions to strengthen the longstanding connections between the Indian diaspora and India and recognise their contributions to the country as well as the wider world.
Uttar Pradesh Renames Bhadohi District as Sant Ravidas Nagar Bhadohi
- Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced on 4 October 2026, that Bhadohi district will now be called Sant Ravidas Nagar Bhadohi. He made the announcement at an event in the district.
- The government says the new name honours Sant Ravidas, a medieval saint who is respected for bringing people together through his spiritual teachings. The plan was first announced on Guru Purnima.

India Joins 153rd IPU Assembly in Tanzania
- An Indian Parliamentary Delegation led by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Shri Harivansh is participating in the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania.

Bank of Baroda Becomes Second Public Sector Bank to Sponsor a Pension Fund
- Bank of Baroda became the second public sector bank to enter the pension fund business after receiving the PFRDA Certificate of Appointment as Sponsor of the Pension Fund under Section 27 of the PFRDA Act, 2013, on the occasion of NPS Divas 2026.
- The bank also became one of the first few banks to onboard Tatkal NPS on the BHIM App as part of its second-phase rollout. The integration was aimed at making digital onboarding to the National Pension System more accessible through the BHIM platform.

Kumkum, Sujeet named inaugural recipients of first Jaspal Rana & Raja Randhir Singh awards
- Archer Kumkum Anil Mohod and wrestler Sujeet Kalkal have been named the first-ever recipients of the Jaspal Rana Award and the Raja Randhir Singh Award respectively by the Indian Olympic Association, in recognition of their performances at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
- The awards have been instituted by the IOA to honour the best female and male sportspersons of the Games, and to commemorate the legacy of two stalwarts of Indian sport who passed away earlier this year.

Qatar receives OCA flag to host 21st Asian Games 2030
- Qatar formally received the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) Flag at the Closing Ceremony of the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026, officially beginning its journey towards hosting the continental Games in Doha in 2030.
- The handover ceremony also saw the unveiling of the Doha 2030 identity and slogan, ‘The Games We Live For’, as Qatar prepares to welcome Asia to the capital 20 years after Doha hosted the Asian Games for the first time in 2006.

Veteran actor and filmmaker Nana Patekar passed away at the age of 75
- Veteran actor and filmmaker Nana Patekar passed away at the age of 75 on October 8, 2026, after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in Dona Paula, Goa.
- Winner of three National Film Awards and the Padma Shri (2013). He also served in the Territorial Army as an Honorary Lieutenant Colonel. Nearly five decades in Hindi and Marathi cinema, along with theatre.
Filmmaker Singeetham Srinivasa Rao Passes Away
- Legendary filmmaker Singeetham Srinivasa Rao, who directed genre-defining Indian films such as Pushpaka Vimanam and Aditya 369, died in Chennai on 5 October following age-related complications. He was 94.
- Singeetham Srinivasa Rao made his directorial debut with Neeti Nijayiti (1972). He went on to direct films like Dikkatra Parvathi (1974), Tharam Marindi (1977), Panthulamma (1978), Mayuri (1985), Anand (1986), Pushpaka Vimana (1987), Aditya 369 (1991), Brundavanam (1992), Magalir Mattum (1994), Bhairava Dweepam (1994), Madam (1994), and Son of Aladdin (2003). His last film was Sing Geetham, which hit screens earlier this year.
