Rajnath Singh launched Navy’s updated indigenous programme Swavalamban 2.0
- Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has launched the Navy’s updated indigenous programme Swavalamban 2.0 in New Delhi.
- During the event, also released the fifth Positive Indigenisation list of 98 items at the event. It shows the major step in the Indigenisation process of the Armed forces.
- These 98 items in this list are a big step in the self-reliance of the Defence sector.
- He also launched 76 challenges for the industry under 10th Defence India Start-up Challenges & DISC 10 PRIME of Innovations for Defence.
Madhya Pradesh announces 35 % reservation for women in govt jobs
- The Madhya Pradesh government has issued a notification for providing 35 percent reservation for women in recruitment, barring the forest department.
- The government has introduced an amendment to the Madhya Pradesh Civil Services (Special Provision for Appointment of Women) Rules, 1997 to provide 35 percent reservation for women in the state.
- Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan recently announced that 35 percent of vacancies in police and other government jobs will be filled by women.
- Madhya Pradesh was the first state to introduce 50 percent reservation for women in elections to panchayats and urban bodies.

PM Modi announces to establish Central Tribal University in Telangana

- The Union cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a proposal for an amendment to the Central Universities Act, 2009 to establish a Central Tribal University in Telangana.
- The cabinet approved the introduction of the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2023, which further amends the Central Universities Act, 2009.
- This was done with the aim of establishing the Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University in the Mulugu district of Telangana as stipulated in the Thirteenth Schedule to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act, 2014.
- The new tribal university will be named after Telangana’s tribal deities Sammakka and Sarakka. A budget of Rs. 889.07 crore would be allocated towards the establishment of this institution.
- By offering educational and research facilities in tribal art, culture, and traditional knowledge systems for the benefit of the state’s tribal population, the new university shall not only expand access to and improve the standard of higher education in the state, but also foster avenues for higher education and expand knowledge.
Bihar govt announces 10% reservation for EWS in judicial services
- Bihar government has announced 10 percent reservation for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in the judicial services and state-run law colleges and universities.
- The announcement came just a day after the government released the first set of data from state’s caste survey.
- The cabinet approved amendments in the guidelines of the State Judicial Services, 1951, allowing 10 percent reservation for EWS category in judicial services and also in state-run law institutes and universities.
- According to the data, Extremely Backward Communities (EBCs) account for 36.01% of the population, while Backward Classes comprise an additional 27.12%.

RBI revealed its fourth bi-monthly Monetary Policy

- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has revealed its fourth bi-monthly monetary policy. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), led by RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das.
- RBI Monetary Policy Committee has kept the key policy repo rate unchanged at 6.5%. This is the fourth meeting on the trot that the MPC decided to maintain the status quo on the repo rate.
- Currently, Repo rate is at 6.5 percent, Reverse Repo at 3.35 percent and Bank rate is at 6.75 percent.
- The MPC last raised this rate by 25 bps to 6.50% at its meeting in February 2023. Announcing the bi-monthly monetary policy, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said the transmission of 250 bps repo rate cut is still incomplete.
- The Real GDP growth projection for FY24 remains unchanged at 6.5%. Similarly, inflation for FY24 is projected at 5.4%, unchanged from earlier.
- Preventing food and fuel price shocks are a non-negotiable necessity, the Governor said.

Anirban Mukherjee appointed as Global CEO of PayU

- Prosus-owned fintech major PayU India’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Anirban Mukherjee has been promoted to the role of global CEO of PayU.
- He is replacing Laurent Le Moal, who will step back from the operational management of the day-to-day business but will remain with Prosus and PayU in an advisory capacity.
- In his new role, Anirban will join the Prosus leadership team and report directly to Ervin Tu, Prosus and Naspers Interim CEO. He will be responsible for overall business operations of PayU.
- This comes just two months after Netherlands-based investment firm Prosus announced that the fintech arm PayU is selling a part of its business.

Prof. Dr. Joyeeta Gupta receives Spinoza Prize for Climate Change

- Indian-origin professor Dr Joyeeta Gupta has received the Spinoza Prize, the highest distinction in Dutch science for her work in the field of climate change at a ceremony in the Netherlands.
- The prize was presented to her by the Netherlands’ minister for Education, Science, and Culture, Robert Dijkgraaf at The Hague.
- The Dutch Research Council (NWO) prize is worth 1.5 million euros which Gupta intends to spend on scientific research and activities related to knowledge utilization.
- Joyeeta Gupta is a Dutch environmental scientist who is professor of Environment and Development in the Global South at the University of Amsterdam.

Ojas Deotale is Nagpur’s First Asian Games Gold Medalist
- India’s first world champion in an individual archery event, Ojas Pravin Deotale, is now Nagpur’s first sportsperson to win an Asian Games medal after he created history by clinching a gold in the mixed team compound event at Hangzhou.
- The 21-year-old city boy paired up with Jyothi Vennam Surekha and surprised archery powerhouse South Korea to win the first archery gold for India in the 19th edition of the Games.
- In the gold-medal match of the mixed-team event, the Indian duo of Ojas and Jyothi defeated Korean duo of Chaewon So and Jaehoon Joo 159-158.
- Indian archer Ojas Deotale, hailing from Nagpur, clinched the gold medal in the men’s individual compound archery event.
Jyothi Vennam wins gold medal in women’s individual compound archery
- India’s Jyothi Surekha Vennam won the gold medal in the women’s individual compound archery event at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.
- Jyothi defeated So Chaewon of South Korea 149-145 in the final to complete a hattrick of gold medals, having already won titles in the women’s and mixed team events.

Aditi Swami bags bronze in compound archery women’s individual event
- India’s Aditi Swami has won the bronze medal in the women’s individual compound archery event at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.
- Aditi, who is the reigning world champion, defeated Ratih Zilizati Fadhly of Indonesia 146-140 in the bronze medal playoff.
- The 17-year-old from Maharashtra had lost 146-149 to Jyothi Surekha Vennam, 10 years senior to her, in an all-Indian semifinal.
- This is Aditi’s second medal at her first-ever appearance at the continental event. The teenager, along with Jyothi and Parneet Kaur, defeated Chinese Taipei 230-229 to clinch the women’s team gold medal.
Aman Sehrawat won bronze medal in men’s 57kg category
- Aman Sehrawat secured a bronze medal for India in the men’s freestyle wrestling 57kg category at the Asian Games 2023.
- Sehrawat beat local favorite Liu Minghu by 11-0.
- Aman Sehrawat is the U-23 world champion. Aged 16, he became the first Indian wrestler to win a gold medal at the U-23 World Wrestling Championships in Pontevedra, Spain, last year.
- He also won a silver medal at the U-20 World Wrestling Championships.
- A year later, Aman has an Asian Games bronze medal to his name now. Aman started his Asian Games 2023 journey with a 6-1 win over Korean wrestler Kim Sung-gwon in the Round of 16. He then knocked out Iran’s Ebrahim Khari in the quarterfinals with a 19-8 victory.
Prannoy wins bronze in men’s singles badminton
- India’s H.S. Prannoy clinched bronze after going down against China’s Li Shifeng in the badminton men’s singles semifinal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou.
- After going into the first game break trailing 10-11, World No.1 Shifeng cruised through the contest as he won 21-16. 21-9 in just over 45 minutes.
- This is India’s third medal in the sport in the 19th edition of the Asiad. Syed Modi previously finished third in the 1982 edition of the Asian Games.
India won Asian Games cricket gold without having to bat
- India was crowned Asian Games men’s cricket champions without needing to bat in an anti-climactic finish.
- India was declared winners of the final under an Asian Games-specific rule where the higher-ranked team takes the honours if the match cannot be finished, in this case due to rain.
- Afghanistan made 112-5 under the floodlights in Hangzhou before the wet weather arrived after 18.2 overs.
- Despite the damp ending, it completed a golden double for India after they beat Sri Lanka by 19 runs to be crowned women’s champions last week.
- Twenty20 cricket has been played at the Asian Games twice before, at Guangzhou 2010 and Incheon 2014, with Bangladesh and then Sri Lanka crowned men’s winners.
- Afghanistan was runners-up both times, but India did not take part.
Satwiksairaj-Chirag duo win India’s first-ever gold medal in badminton
- The Indian men’s doubles badminton duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty made history by securing India’s first-ever gold medal in badminton at the Asian Games.
- The dynamic pair emerged victorious after defeating the formidable Korean duo with a scoreline of 21-18, 21-16 in a breathtaking final match.
- With this victory, the dazzling duo of Satwik and Chirag brought India’s first medal in men’s doubles in 41 years since Leroy D’sa and Pradeep Gandhe won a bronze in the 1982 edition.
- The two became the first Indians to win the Asian Championships in 58 years in March this year, extended their sensational run with a 21-18, 21-16 win over Choi and Kim, ranked 15th, to achieve their crowning glory.
- India had won a silver and bronze in the 2018 edition at Jakarta, while bagging five bronze at the 1982 edition.
India won 107 medals at 19th Asian Games in China
- More than 12,000 athletes from all 45 members of the Olympic Council of Asia competed in the 19th Asian Games, which took place in Hangzhou, People’s Republic of China from 23 September to 8 October.
- A total of 481 events were contested, with competitions in nine sports – archery, artistic swimming, boxing, breaking, hockey, modern pentathlon, sailing, tennis and water polo – will serving as Olympic qualifiers, with Paris 2024 quotas on the line.
- The Indian contingent bagged a record 107 medals – 28 gold, 38 silver, and 41 bronze – in Hangzhou, surpassing their previous best, set at 2018 Jakarta.
