Exp. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on 18th July launched ‘Navin Rojgar Chhatri Yojana’ for an all-round development of the Scheduled Castes. He transferred a financial assistance of 17.42 crore online to 3,484 people under the ‘Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Swarojgar Yojana’ and interacted with some beneficiaries from Rae Bareli, Gorakhpur, Basti, Meerut, Azamgarh and Moradabad districts through video conferencing.

The chief minister said, “Economic equality becomes the basis of social equality. The society with one of its sections becoming strong while another remaining weak will not be able to become self reliant. It is necessary that there is a balance in the society and this balance should also be at the economic level.”

Exp. In a view to strengthening grass roots democracy by providing a sense of security to the elected members of local bodies, Jammu and Kashmir has approved an insurance cover of Rs 25 lakh to all the elected panchayat and Urban Local Body (ULB) members in case of militancy-related death.

This comes after a month when Congress sarpanch Ajay Pandita was shot dead by militants in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

Exp. Railway Board Chairman VK Yadav on 18th July announced that all the capitals of North-Eastern states will be connected to the rail network by 2023. “We are implementing a project to connect all the capitals of North-Eastern states. The capitals of Assam, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh are already connected. In Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Meghalaya, the capital connectivity work is in progress. Manipur will be connected in March 2022, Mizoram in March 2023, Nagaland in March 2023, Meghalaya in March 2022 and Sikkim in December 2022.

Exp. Credit rating agency India Ratings and Research expects gross domestic product (GDP) to contract by (-5.3) per cent on a year-on-year basis in FY21.

This will be the lowest GDP growth in Indian history and the sixth instance of economic contraction, others being in FY58, FY66, FY67, FY73 and FY80; the previous low was negative 5.2 per cent in FY80.

Exp. Marianna Vardinoyannis of Greece and Morissana Kouyate of Guinea were on 18th July announced the laureates of the United Nations 2020 Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Prize by General Assembly President Tijjani Muhammad-Bande.

Vardinoyannis is a Greek philanthropist and world advocate for human rights and the protection of children’s health and welfare.

Kouyate is a leading advocate on ending violence against women and girls in Africa.

About 273 million Indians moved out of multidimensional poverty between 2005-2006 and 2015-2016, according to a UN report, which noted that India has recorded the largest reduction in the number of people living in this category.

The data, released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI), shows that 65 out of 75 countries studied significantly reduced their multidimensional poverty levels between 2000 and 2019.

Exp. After decades of fighting for the freedom of Black Americans, civil rights leader Rev. Cordy Tindell “C.T.” Vivian died at 95 years old. He also led the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and became its interim president in 2012. He also helped in organizing the Freedom Rides to integrate buses across the south and trained waves of activists in non-violent protest.

Cordy Tindell Vivian was honored by the Barack Obama with the presidential medal of freedom in 2013.
