World Bank economist Deepak Mishra appointed as director of ICRIER

  • Deepak Mishra, Practice Manager in the World Bank’s Macroeconomics, Trade, and Investment Global Practice, has been appointed as the next director and chief executive of the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER).
  • He will take the charge from Rajat Kathuria who has been the director and chief executive of ICRIER since 1st September 2012.
  • Mishra has held various positions at the World Bank, including co-director of the World Development Report 2016 (Digital Dividends), country economist for Ethiopia, Pakistan, Sudan, and Vietnam.

  • India’s foreign-exchange reserves surpassed Russia’s to become the world’s fourth largest, as the South Asian nation’s central bank continues to hoard dollars to cushion the economy against any sudden outflows.
  • India’s foreign currency holdings fell by $4.3 billion to $580.3 billion as of March 5.
  • , edging out Russia’s $580.1 billion pile. China has the largest reserves, followed by Japan and Switzerland on the International Monetary Fund table.

  • Mumbai had earlier secured the ISL Shield along with a spot in the AFC Champions League group stage by finishing first in the standings in the regular season.

69th National volleyball championships held in Bhubaneswar

  • Haryana men and Kerala women won the 69th National volleyball championships at the KIIT University in Bhubaneswar on March 11, 2021.
  • Both the finals were won in straight sets with Haryana beating Assam and women’s defending champion Kerala prevailing over Railways. Kerala men defeated Railways 36-38, 25-18, 23-25, 25-21, 15-12 in a two-hour thriller for the bronze.

♦Bhavani Devi becomes first ever Indian fencer to qualify for Olympics

  • Bhavani Devi became the first ever Indian fencer to qualify for the Olympics. The sabre fencer secured an Olympic spot due to events in the ongoing Fencing World Cup on 14th March.
  • Hosts Hungary lost in the quarterfinals of the team event, allowing Korea to progress to the semis. Therefore, Bhavani Devi qualifies through the Adjusted Official Ranking (AOR) Method.

♦ISRO launches sounding rocket RH-560 to study attitudinal variations

  • Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched the sounding rocket (RH-560) to study attitudinal variations in the neutral winds and plasma dynamics on March 12, 2021 at Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), Sriharikota Range (SHAR).
  • Sounding rockets are one or two-stage solid propellant rockets used for probing the upper atmospheric regions and for space research. They also serve as easily affordable platforms to test or prove prototypes of new components or subsystems intended for use in launch vehicles and satellites.

♦Maths, Physics no longer must for engineering admissions: AICTE

  • Prospective engineering students will not have to mandatorily study maths and physics in Class 12, according to new norms released by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for 2021-22. According to the AICTE’s approval process handbook for 2021-22, students only need to score 45% in any three subjects from a list of 14 in order to qualify.
  • The diverse list includes physics, mathematics, chemistry, computer science, electronics, information technology, biology, informatics practices, biotechnology, agriculture, technical vocational subject, engineering graphics, business studies and entrepreneurship.

♦14 March – Pi Day

  • Pi Day is an annual celebration of mathematical constant (Pi). The approximate value of Pi is 3.14. It is marked on March 14 which if written in the format of month/day (3/14), will include the first three significant digits of the value of Pi.
  • In 1988, Physicist Larry Shaw first recognised Pi Day. In 2009, the United States House of Representatives designated March 14 as Pi Day. Later, UNESCO marked Pi Day as the ‘International Day of Mathematics’ during its general conference in 2019.

♦14 March – International Day of Action for Rivers

  • Every year on 14 March, the International Day of Action for Rivers is observed to raise voice to protect rivers and demand for improving the policies for Rivers.
  • It is a day to educate one another about the threats facing our rivers and to find solutions.

♦15 March – World Consumer Rights Day

  • It is observed on 15 March every year for raising global awareness about consumer rights and needs. This day is a chance to demand that the rights of all consumers are respected and protected and to protest against social injustices.
  • Theme 2021:“Tackle Plastic Pollution”.
