Arvind Kejriwal to take oath as Delhi CM for third time

  • Arvind Kejriwal, whose party stormed to power in Delhi for the third term by winning 62 of 70 seats, is set to take oath as Chief Minister for a third term. The oath-taking ceremony is being held at the Ramlila Maidan.
  • AP held on to the nearly 54 per cent votes it had got in the 2015 Delhi Assembly polls, while the BJP improved its tally with 38.51 per cent votes. The Congress party, which ruled Delhi for 15 years before being voted out in 2013, drew a blank.

India, Portugal sign 14 agreements in areas including defence, culture & yoga

  • India and Portugal signed 14 agreements to boost cooperation in a range of areas, including defense, investment, transport, ports, culture, and industrial and intellectual property rights and yoga. The agreements were signed after extensive talks between PM Narendra Modi and Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in New Delhi.

Nine medical colleges, two AIIMS sanctioned for Jammu and Kashmir

  • Union Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions Jitendra Singh on 14th February performed “bhoomi poojan” ceremony of AIIMS building here. Speaking on the occasion, Singh said that Jammu and Kashmir has been allocated two AIIMS – one in Jammu and other in Kashmir.
  • The Union Government had approved the proposal for setting up an AIIMS in Jammu at Vijaypur, District Samba under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) in January 2019.
  • Estimated to cost of Rs 1661 crores, the project is being executed by CPWD. It is projected to be completed in 30 months by August 2022. Once completed, AIIMS Jammu would be a 750-bed hospital with super specialty departments.

  • On Valentine`s day (14th February), `Pyaar ka Paudha` (a plant of love) campaign has been launched by the Bihar government`s Department of Environment and Forest in Patna, to encourage the practice of planting trees in the state. It`s good for the environment and climate.

2 Prominent Government Institutes Renamed After Sushma Swaraj

  • The government has renamed two prominent buildings after former foreign minister and BJP veteran Sushma Swaraj, a day before her 68th birth anniversary.
  • First: The Pravasi Bharatiya Kendra, a cultural centre reflecting India’s connect with its diaspora, has been renamed Sushma Swaraj Bhavan, who was known for reaching out to distressed Indians globally.
  • Second: The Foreign Service Institute, a renowned institution where diplomats are trained, will now be called Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service.

Sebi constitutes municipal bonds development committee headed by Sujit Prasad

  • Markets regulator Sebi on 14th February said it has constituted a committee which will suggest on policy matters pertaining to development of municipal debt securities and facilitate municipalities for issuance of such bonds.
  • The regulator has constituted a municipal bonds development committee headed by its Executive Director Sujit Prasad and comprises representatives from municipal corporations, lawyers, professionals and market practitioners.
  • The panel will advise Sebi on issues related to regulation and development of primary and secondary market of municipal debt securities.

♦RBI Board Recommends Switch To April-March Financial Year after 80 years

RBI

  • The board of the Reserve Bank of India has recommended a change in the central bank’s accounting year to April-March starting 2020-21. The RBI currently follows a July-June financial year. “The Board recommended aligning the financial year of RBI, currently July-June, with the Government’s fiscal year (April-March) from the year 2020-21 and approved forwarding a proposal to the Government for its consideration on 15th February.
  • According an RBI spokesperson, the ongoing financial year will end on June 30, 2020. The next financial year will be a nine month year, starting from July 1, 2020 and ending on March 31, 2021. Thereafter the RBI will begin each financial year from April 1.
  • The RBI has followed a July-June financial year since 1940, when it moved away from a January-December financial year.       
  • Headed by former RBI Governor Bimal Jalan, set up to review the central bank’s economic capital framework, had suggested aligning RBI’s financial year with the government’s fiscal year.
  • Benefit: According to the panel’s report the RBI would be able to provide better estimates of the projected surplus transfers to the government, and help the central bank in better ‘cohesiveness’ in monetary policy projections.

  • About Dr Carl H June: Dr June will bag the award for his pioneering work in the field of immunotherapy; breakthrough research in developing CAR-T therapy for the treatment of cancer and development and commercialisation of world’s first FDA-approved gene therapy.
  • About Dr Vas (Vasant) Narasimhan: Dr Vas will receive the award for his extensive work on a range of public health issues particularly in developing countries and exemplary work in the development of over 20 novel medicines, including advances cell and gene therapies as well as vaccines.

Govt appoints Rajiv Bansal as Air India CMD amid privatisation process

  • In between the privatisation process of Air India, the government appointed Rajiv Bansal, an additional secretary with the oil and gas ministry, as the new CMD of the state-owned airline. He will replace Ashwani Lohani, the current Chairman & Managing Director (CMD), who didn’t agree to extend his one-year contract, which expired on February 11.
  • Bansal has served as CMD of Air India for around a year in 2017 before going back to the oil & gas ministry.

ISRO G Narayanan to head space PSU NSIL

  • Veteran space scientist G Narayanan has been named the chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation’s newly formed commercial entity New Space India Ltd (NSIL).
  • He was earlier working as deputy director (systems reliability and quality assurance) at the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC), a Thiruvananthapuram-based unit of ISRO that designs, develops liquid propulsion stages for launch vehicles.
