♦India, Japan ink pact on movement of skilled workers

• An agreement to promote the movement of skilled Indian workers to Japan in a total of 14 sectors was signed between the two countries on 18th Jan.
• The areas under which skilled Indian workers would be eligible to seek employment in Japan include construction, shipbuilding and ship-related industry, automobile maintenance, nursing, aviation, agriculture, fisheries and food services industry among others.
• Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla and Japanese Ambassador Suzuki Satoshi signed the Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) on a “basic framework for partnership for proper operation of the system pertaining to Specified Skilled Worker (SSW)”.

♦Nepali Climbers 1st to Scale K2, World’s 2nd Highest Mountain, In Winter

• A team of 10 Nepali summiteers climbed K2, setting a record as the first team ever to climb the world’s second-highest mountain in the winter season.
• The 28,251-foot summit of K2 has never been reached in winter due to weather and geographical difficulties. Climbing to the top requires technical skills.
• K2 is the second-highest peak after Mount Everest.
• Mingma Gyalje Sherpa, Nirmal Purja, Pun Magar, Gelje Sherpa, Mingma David Sherpa, Mingma Tenzi Sherpa, Dawa Temba Sherpa, Pem Chhiri Sherpa, Kilu Pemba Sherpa, DawaTenjing Sherpa, and Sona Sherpa reached the top of the peak on 17th Jan.

♦Harsh Vardhan chairs 148th session of WHO Executive Board

• Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare digitally chaired the 148th session of WHO Executive Board, through Video Conference.   The 148th session of the Executive Board has been organised from 18-26 January 2021.
• The meeting provides a platform to bring together all member states to set the directions and agenda and continue striving for the objective of Health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. The WHO has declared the Year 2021 as the Year of Global Solidarity and Survival.

♦Vishwavir Ahuja re-appointed as RBL Bank chief

• The board of directors of RBL Bank has approved the re-appointment of Vishwavir Ahuja as the Managing Director and CEO of the bank for three years. The re-appointment is with effect from June 30, 2021, to June 29, 2024.
• Ahuja is a seasoned banker with over 38 years of experience and expertise in banking, economics, finance, risk management, HR and business management.

♦Khelo India Zanskar Winter Sport & Youth festival 2021 begins

• In Ladakh, the inaugural edition of the Khelo India Zanskar Winter Sport & Youth Festival 2021 kicked off on 18th January 2021.
• The 13- Day Zanskar Winter Sports Festival aims to open a new arena in Ladakh for adventure and Nature loving tourists and a boost for local Youth to hone up their skills in winter sports to represent India.

♦Goa CM releases book ‘Manohar Parrikar – Off the Record’

• Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant released a book ‘Manohar Parrikar- Off the Record’ at a function organized at Institute Menezes Braganza hall in the city. The book has been written by senior journalist Waman Subha Prabhu.
• The book ‘Manohar Parrikar- Off the Record’ is a collection of memories of Mr Prabhu who happened to be with late Parrikar during the journey of his life.

♦January 18 to February 17, 2021: National Road Safety Month

• The National Road Safety Month being held from January 18 to February 17, 2021, the month-long event will focus on promoting road safety in the country.
• Over 400 people are killed in road accidents every day and over 1,200 injured every single day in India.

♦Government announces 23rd January to be celebrated as “PARAKRAM DIWAS’ every year

• Government of India has decided to celebrate the 125th Birth Anniversary year of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in a befitting manner at national and international level, beginning from 23rd January 2021.
• A High Level Committee, headed by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has been constituted for deciding the programs, and to supervise and guide the commemoration.
• In order to honour and remember Netaji’s indomitable spirit and selfless service to the nation, Government of India has decided to celebrate his birthday on the 23rd day of January every year as “PARAKRAM DIWAS” to inspire people of the country, especially the youth, to act with fortitude in the face of adversity as Netaji did, and to infuse in them a spirit of patriotic fervour.
