  • Union Culture Minister Shri Prahlad Singh Patel released an e-book “Prof B.B. Lal -India Rediscovered” on 2 May on the occasion of the centenary year of great archaeologist Professor B. B. Lal. The book is a tribute from the Ministry of Culture for his immense contribution to the field of archaeology. The book is a centenary special edition that has been prepared by the Ministry of culture in collaboration with Prof B B Lal Centenary Celebration Committee.

Five more States, UTs added under One Nation One Ration Card platform

  • The Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Ram Vilas Paswan approved the integration of 5 States and Union Territories (UTs) with the National Cluster under the “One Nation One Ration Card” plan. The 5 states/UTs include Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu.
  • Already 12 states are under the One Nation One Ration Card plan. The 12 are Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Kerala, Karnataka Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Telangana, and Tripura.

Kisan Sabha App: CSIR launches new app to provide timely logistics support to farmers

  • The Kisan Sabha application was launched by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI) on May 1, 2020. The application will connect farmers to freight transportation management and supply chain amid COVID-19 lockdown.
  • The farmers are presently facing difficulty in transporting their harvest to the market or procuring seeds or fertilizers in the wake of the nationwide lockdown. Hence, proper supply chain management is required to facilitate the timely delivery of the produce at the best pricing.

Kashmiri Saffron Gets GI Tag

  • One of the most popular spices know for its aroma, the Kashmiri Saffron has received geographical indication (GI) tag. The recognition was formally published in the latest GI Journal by the GI Registry. As per the documents, the Geographical Indication Registry has approved the GI tagging on the saffron with GI no 635.

  • Communications and Electronics and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad emphasized on the responsibility of G20 nations to focus on making inclusive and sustainable economies and societies that are more resilient in the face of the ongoing pandemic.

  • NASA has developed a new Mars helicopter and Vaneeza Rupani, a high schooler from Northport, Alabama, was bestowed the honour to name it. In a historic event, the 17-year-old girl of Indian origin Vaneeza has officially named NASA’s first Mars helicopter ‘Ingenuity’ and everyone loves it. It will be the first aircraft to attempt powered flight on another planet.

RBI cancels licence of Mumbai-based CKP Cooperative Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on 2nd May cancelled the licence of Mumbai-based CKP Co-operative Bank Ltd. The bank has about 97 percent NPAs. The licence of CKP Co-operative Bank Ltd has been cancelled with effect from the close of business on April 30, 2020, as the bank’s financial position had worsened.
  • “The bank is not satisfying the requirement of minimum capital and reserves….The bank is not in a position to pay its present and future depositors, thereby not complying with Section 22(3) (a) read with Section 56 of the Act,” the RBI said.

  • The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has approved the proposed combination between BP Global Investments Ltd and Reliance BP Mobility Ltd (RBPML) under Section 31(1) of the Competition Act 2002.
  • The proposed combination relates to transfer to RBPML of Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) and its group entities’ entire undertaking pertaining to the business of owning, operating and conducting petroleum retail and related activities in India.

  • The proposed combination relates to the acquisition of Tech Data Corporation (Tech Data) by Tiger Midco LLC (Tiger Midco) by way of merger of Tech Data with a wholly owned subsidiary of Tiger Midco, viz., Merger Sub.

  • The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors 30th April approved USD 400 million multi-year financing envelope to help India enhance its coastal resources, protect coastal populations from pollution, erosion, and sea-level rise, and improve livelihood opportunities for coastal communities,” said the World Bank.
  • “The multi-year financial support responds to the growing need to safeguard India’s coastal and marine assets over the next decade. The program will help protect coastal resources by focusing on the rehabilitation of coastal beaches and mangroves.

  • The Centre is yet to announce new economic growth and budgetary estimates for 2020-21 in light of the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting nationwide lockdown. However, the Finance Ministry is internally projecting FY21 GDP growth to be around 2-3 per cent, down from the 6-6.5 per cent given in the 2019-20 Economic Survey.

  • Yes Bank appointed Neeraj Dhawan as its Chief Risk Officer (CRO) with immediate effect. Neeraj was appointed for a period of three years. He assumed charge on 2 May. He replaced Ashish Agarwal, the current CRO, who will be transitioning to a new role in the bank. Neeraj Dhawan: Neeraj Dhawan held the position of chief risk officer for retail and business banking at Yes Bank. He has experience of over 29 years of financial services and banking industry.
