Covid-19 battle: World Bank offers $1bn for proposed India project

  • The World Bank has offered $1 billion to the Indian government for a proposed India Covid-19 emergency response and health systems preparedness project. This four-year project aims to develop the preparedness of India’s health care systems in the time of the pandemic.
  • The World Bank funding is from its Covid-19 fast-track facility where both the entities (World Bank and the government of India) will work on following the best international practice.

COP26 climate change conference postponed until 2021 due to coronavirus

  • A major UN climate change conference due to take place in November has been postponed until 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
  • The COP26 summit was set to be hosted by the U.K. at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) in Glasgow, Scotland, with over 30,000 people expected to attend.

Hindustan Unilever completes its merger with GSKCH India


  • FMCG major Hindustan Unilever on 2nd April announced completion of GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare Ltd’s merger (GSKCH) with itself.
  • The company has received all the necessary regulator approvals along with the National Company Law Tribunal for the merger of GSKCH into the company, HUL said in a statement.


World Athletics championship shifted to 2022

World Athletics championship shifted to 2022

  • The 2021 world athletics championships in Eugene, Oregon will be shifted to 2022 to accommodate the re-arranged Tokyo Olympics, World Athletics said.
  • The announcement came immediately after Olympics organisers said the 2020 Tokyo Games — postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic — will now take place on July 23-August 8, 2021.
  • That means the world athletics championships that were scheduled to take place in Eugene on August 6-15, 2021, can no longer be held on those dates.

Wimbledon cancelled due to coronavirus, first time since World War II


  • Wimbledon organisers on 2nd April scrapped the grasscourt Grand Slam for the first time since World War II as the coronavirus wreaks further havoc on the global sporting calendar.
  • The cancellation of the only grasscourt major at the All England Club leaves the season in disarray, with no tennis due to be played until mid-July. “Devastated,” tweeted eight-time champion Roger Federer.

Padma Shri awardee Bhai Nirmal Singh Khalsa dies after testing positive for coronavirus

  • Former Hazoori Raagi of the Golden Temple and Padma Shri awardee, Bhai Nirmal Singh Khalsa, died.
  • He tested positive for coronavirus On 2nd April and died of a cardiac arrest. Nirmal Singh was honoured with Padma Shri in 2009.
