♦India aims to achieve 100 MT coal gasification target by 2030: Union Minister Pralhad Joshi

- India aims for 100 million tonnes (MT) coal gasification by 2030 with investments worth over Rs. 4 lakh crores, said Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister of Coal and Mines.
- It will boost production of energy fuel, urea for fertilisers and production of other chemicals; transporting gas is cheaper than transporting coal, reducing energy imports etc.

♦Indian Govt Bans PubG And 118 Other Apps

- After India China clash in Ladhak, Indian government has decided to ban PubG mobile game and other 118 Chinese Apps.
- The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India invoking it’s power under section 69A of the Information Technology Act read with the relevant provisions of the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking of Access of Information by Public) Rules 2009.

♦Defence Minister to visit Russia: To attend SCO, CSTO and CIS

- Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh is visiting Moscow from September 3-5, 2020 at the invitation of Defence Minister of Russian Federation General Shergei Shoigu to attend the combined meeting of Defence Ministers of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) and Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) member States in commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of victory in the World War II.
- During his visit, Raksha Mantri is also scheduled to meet Defence Minister General Shoigu to discuss bilateral cooperation and issues of mutual interest.
- India and Russia are privileged strategic partners. The present visit marks one of many high political level interactions, which the two countries engage in regularly.
♦India and Nigeria Resolve To Deepen Cooperation To Counter Terrorism, Piracy

- India and Nigeria on 1st September vowed to deepen cooperation to counter terrorism, insurgency and piracy while also boosting trade exchanges.
- Both sides recalled their extensive cooperation in the field of defence training and capacity building, and expressed satisfaction that it was expanding to newer areas such as defence equipment support, medical and maintenance services, sharing of Research and Development expertise for counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency, and regular exchange of information.

♦Japan announces 50 billion yen emergency loan for India to fight Covid-19 pandemic

- Japan announced on 1st August it will extend a emergency support loan of up to 50 billion yen (almost Rs 3,500 crore) to back India’s response to the Covid-19 crisis, including implementation of health and medical policies and development of hospitals equipped with ICUs.
- This is the largest amount of financial assistance announced by any country so far to support India’s response to the Covid-19 crisis, which has had widespread impacts on the economy and health sector.
- The loan will have an interest rate of 0.01 percent per annum with a redemption period of 15 years, including a four year grace period.

- Aveek Sarkar, the Editor Emeritus and Vice Chairman of the Ananda Bazar Group of Publications, has been elected Chairman of the Press Trust of India, the country’s premier news agency.

♦Hemant Khatri becomes new CMD of Hindustan Shipyard Limited

- Hemant Khatri (Retd) has assumed charge as the Chairman and Managing Director of state-owned defence shipbuilder, Hindustan Shipyard Ltd (HSL) at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
- He will replace Rear Admiral L V Sarat Babu (Retd). Previously, Hemant Khatri was serving as the Director of Strategic Projects HSL.
♦Pramod Chandra Mody gets 6 Months Extension as Chairman of CBDT

- Pramod Chandra Mody was on 31st August given a six-month extension till February next year as the chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).
- The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved extension in re-appointment of PC Mody as the CBDT chairman for a period of six months with effect from September 1 this year to February 28, 2021.

♦INDRA 2020: Indian Navy to hold mega exercise with Russia

- India and Russia are to hold bilateral naval exercise INDRA 2020 in Andaman Sea, close to strategic Strait of Malacca. The exercise is being conducted while the Indian Navy is on high operational alert due to the standoff with China in Ladakh.
- Three Russian Naval ships are to take part in the exercise on September 4 and 5.

- World Coconut Day is celebrated on September 2 every year. The day is celebrated to create awareness about the benefits of coconut.
- The first-ever celebration of world coconut day was in the year 2009. It’s an annual event to celebrate the day with great enthusiasm by the APCC or the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community.
