India, Sri Lanka sign MoU for up-gradation of infrastructure in plantation schools for estate workers of Indian origin

  • India and Sri Lanka have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for up-gradation of infrastructure in plantation schools for estate workers of Indian origin.
  • The government of India has been implementing several projects in the field of education, deepening India-Sri Lanka cooperation in the education sector. Construction and renovation of many school buildings in Northern Province is also being undertaken under Indian grant assistance.

  • The State Tourism Department has organized the festival in memories of the contribution of Tripura in 1971 Bangladesh liberation war as well as giving a fillip to the Tripura tourism sector.

PM Modi to inaugurate two-day International Judicial Conference 2020 in New Delhi

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate a two-day International Judicial Conference 2020 organised by Supreme Court in New Delhi on 22nd February.
  • Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and Chief Justice Sharad Bobde will also be present on the occasion. Chief Justice Robert Reed of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom will deliver a keynote address at the conference. Chief Justice of Australia will also be present.
  • The conference will witness the participation of numerous other international legal luminaries from across the world.
  • The theme of the International Judicial Conference 2020 is “Judiciary and the changing world”.

NFR Construction builds India’s tallest pier bridge in Manipur

  • The Northeast Frontier Railway (NF) Construction Organisation has built India’s tallest railway pier bridge across river Makru in the Tamenglong district of Manipur.
  • India’s tallest pier bridge is 100 m tall. It is equivalent to a 33-storey building.  The total cost of the bride is Rs.283.5 crore. The span of 555 m is part of the 111-km Jiribam-Tupul-Imphal new broad gauge line.

NCAER pegs GDP growth at 4.9 per cent in 2019-20

  • Think tank National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) on 21st February pegged the economic growth for the current fiscal at 4.9 per cent, a tad down from 5 per cent estimated by the National Statistical Office (NSO).
  • However, for 2020-21, the NCAER expects the Indian economy to improve its growth rate to 6 per cent.

USIBC appoints Vijay Advani as new Chair of Global Board

  • The US-India Business Council on 21st February announced it has appointed Vijay Advani as new Chair of its Global Board of Directors.
  • Advani has taken the charge as Board Chair at a time of significant growth in US-India bilateral trade, which reached USD 160 billion in 2019.
  • Prior to assuming his current role as Executive Chairman in January 2020, Advani served as the CEO of Nuveen. Earlier, he was also Co-President of Franklin Templeton Investments.

Russia to host new edition of AIBA World Cup 2020

  • Russia will be the first country to host the new format of AIBA Team World Cup in 2020.
  • AIBA Executive committee members voted in favour to approve the Russian bid at its meeting in Budapest.
  • The tournament will be coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the victory in World War II under the motto “Boxing for peace”.’
  • The final is scheduled for October in the city of Nizhny Novgorod.
