♦World tallest Rail bridge "Chenab bridge" set to be completed by Dec 2021

  • World tallest railway bridge on river Chenab in Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory is likely to be completed by December 2021. Part of strategic Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link project, its construction will provide reliable and all-weather connectivity with Kashmir Valley.
  • Iconic bridge soaring 359 metres above the bed of the river Chenab in Reasi district, some 100 km from Jammu, will be 35 metres higher than the Eiffel Tower in Paris (France) when construction is completed.
  • 5,462 metric tonnes (MT) of special steel has been used so far for the construction of the massive arch-shaped structure, an engineering marvel. It is estimated that about 10,000 MT will be used to complete it.

♦Guru Ravidas Jayanti Celebrated

  • The Bhakti Movement Saint Guru Ravidas Jayanti is being observed on February 27, 2021 across the country.
  • Guru Ravidas has left behind his great influence on the Indian culture especially in the North India. He is well known for his efforts in eradicating caste system from India. The saint is contemporary to Kabirdas while Mirabai was a disciple him.

♦Saras Aajeevika Mela-2021 Starts at Noida Haat

  • The Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister, Narendra Singh Tomar, has inaugurated the Saras Aajeevika Mela 2021 on February 26, 2021 at Noida Haat. Narendra Singh Tomar while inaugurating the event highlighted that the Ministry of Rural Development is working to include more women under the Self-Help Groups (SHGs).
  • The event was started on February 26, 2021 and will conclude on March 14, 2021. It is being organised by the Ministry of Rural Development. In the event, more than 300 rural self-help groups and craftsman from 27 states have participated. It is being organised from 11AM to 8PM daily.

♦Nirmala Sitharaman attended G20 Central Bank Governors’ meeting

  • The Finance Minister of India, Nirmala Sitharaman, attended the G20 Central Bank Governors’ meeting on February 26, 2021.  This was the first ever G20 Central Bank Governors’ meeting that was held under the Italian Presidency.
  • During the meeting, the finance minister highlighted regarding the India’s policy response with respect to COVID-19 pandemic and the world’s largest inoculation drive with their G-20 counterparts. The G20 Finance Ministers and the Central Bank Governors also held discussion regarding the implications of climate change on global growth and financial stability.

♦SBI joins JPMorgan’s blockchain payments network

SBI joins JPMorgan’s blockchain payments network

  • State Bank of India has tied up with JPMorgan to use the US bank’s blockchain technology to speed up overseas transactions.
  • The tie-up is expected to reduce SBI customers’ transaction costs and time taken for payments. SBI has joined Liink, a new blockchain-based interbank data network developed by JPMorgan. By integrating the technology, the bank expects to reduce transaction costs and improve cross-border payments for its customers.
  • Link is a peer-to-peer network and ecosystem operating under the umbrella of JPMorgan’s blockchain- and digital-currency-focused business, dubbed Onyx. The Liink solution has enlisted more than 400 financial institutions and corporations in 78 countries, including 27 of the world’s top 50 banks.

  • The GDP growth of India during 2020-21 is estimated to contract 8 percent, as per the second advanced estimates projected by the National Statistical Office (NSO). This was 4.9 percent in 2019-20.
  • NSO had projected a GDP contraction of 7.7 percent in its first advance estimate.

AU Small Finance Bank has named Sharad Goklani as President & CTO

  • AU Small Finance Bank has named Sharad Goklani as its new President & CTO. Goklani was earlier associated with Equitas Small Finance Bank as its EVP & Chief Technology Officer.
  • As a part of his new appointment,  Goklani will be based in Jaipur Rajasthan. Prior to Equitas, he was associated with Bharti Airtel and Bharti Telesoft. He holds Master degree in computer application from Jaipur University.
  • According to the lender’s website, it has 728 Banking Touchpoints and over1.8 million customers.

♦IWL 2020-21 to be hosted in Odisha

  • All India Football Federation confirms Odisha as the venue for the forthcoming Hero Indian Women’s League 2020-21 edition.
  • AIFF appreciates Odisha Government’s longstanding partnership with Indian Football wherein the latter have been providing its stadia and State of the Art training facilities to National Teams across various age groups and genders – all in an effort to take Indian Football forward together.


♦PSLV-C51 launches Brazil’s Amazonia-1, 18 other satellites

  • India’s Polar rocket on 28th Feb successfully launched Amazonia-1 of Brazil and 18 other satellites from the spaceport here, in the first mission of the year for space agency ISRO.
  • The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle PSLV-C51 lifted off at around 10.24 am from the first launch pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SHAR) and first injected into orbit primary payload Amazonia-1 about 17 minutes later.

February 28: National Science Day 2021

  • Every year, National Science Day is celebrated on February 28, to mark the discovery of the Raman effect by Indian physicist Sir CV Raman, back in 1928. For this discovery, Sir CV Raman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930.
  • On the occasion of the first National Science Day (28 February 1987), the NCSTC had announced the institution of the National Science Popularization awards for recognizing outstanding efforts in the area of science and communication.

  • World NGO Day is celebrated every year on 27th February globally.

♦Padma Shri Malayalam Poet Vishnunarayanan Namboothiri passes away

  • Renowned Malayalam poet, the priest and academician Vishnu Narayanan Namboothiri, has passed away. He was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2014, for his contribution to the world of Malayalam literature for decades.
  • He also won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, Kendra Sahitya Akademi Fellowship, Vallathol Award, Odakkuzhal Award and the Mathrubhumi Literary Award, among others. He was also a noted scholar of language and the Vedas, as well as an orator.
