♦Kolkata’s First Young Readers’ Boat Library

  • The West Bengal Transport Corporation has launched the First Young Readers’ Boat Library. The library has been launched in collaboration with a heritage book store.  It has been launched on a boat making it first of its kind initiative.

♦Maharashtra tops justice delivery in India 2020

Maharashtra tops justice delivery in India 2020

  • The second edition of the India Justice Report, India’s only ranking of states on delivery of Justice to people, announced here, ranks Maharashtra once again at the top of the 18 Large and Mid-sized states (with population of over one crore each), followed by Tamil Nadu (2019: 3rd), Telangana (2019: 11th) Punjab (2019: 4th) and Kerala (2019: 2nd).
  • The list of seven Small States (population less than one crore each) was topped by Tripura (2019: 7th), followed by Sikkim (2019: 2nd) and Goa (2019: 3rd).
  • The India Justice Report (IJR) is an initiative of Tata Trusts in collaboration with Centre for Social Justice, Common Cause, Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, DAKSH, TISS–Prayas, Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy and How India Lives. The maiden IJR was announced in 2019.

Vice President to Inaugurate National Tribal Festival “Aadi Mahotsav” On February 1

  • The Vice President of India Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu will inaugurate “Aadi Mahotsav”, a National Tribal Festival being organized by TRIFED, Ministry of Tribal Affairs on 1st February, 2021 at Dilli Haat, INA, New Delhi.
  • The Aadi Mahotsav – A Celebration of the Spirit of Tribal Culture, Crafts, Cuisine and Commerce – is a successful annual initiative that was commenced in 2017. The festival was an attempt to familiarise the people with the rich and diverse craft, culture of the tribal communities across the country, in one place.

♦125th Anniversary of “Prabuddha Bharat”

  • The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, will address the 125th anniversary celebration ‘Prabuddha Bharata’ which is scheduled to be organized on January 31, 2021.  It will be organized by the Advaita Ashrama, Mayavati.
  • It is a monthly magazine of the Ramakrishna Order. This magazine was founded in the year 1896 by P. Aiyasami, B. R. Rajam Iyer, G. G. Narasimhacharya, and B. V. Kamesvara Iyer under the guidance of Swami Vivekananda. Prabuddha Bharata magazine was of great significance in spreading the message of the ancient spiritual wisdom of the country.

5th Joint Meeting of the India-Japan Act East Forum

  • The 5th joint meeting of the India-Japan Act East Forum (AEF) was held in New Delhi. The meeting was co-chaired by Foreign Secretary Shri Harsh Vardhan Shringla, and Suzuki Satoshi, Ambassador of Japan to India.
  • During the 5th meeting, the AEF reviewed the progress of ongoing projects in the North Eastern Region of India in various areas including connectivity, hydropower, sustainable development, harnessing of water resources, and skill development.

♦ISRO to launch city college’s academic satellite

ISRO to launch city college’s academic satellite

  • ISRO chairman K Sivan is likely to inaugurate the ‘SriShakthiSat’ ground station at Sri Shakthi Institute of Engineering and Technology in Coimbatore.
  • The station will help monitor the satellite developed by the institute, which is set to be launched by the ISRO. A satellite communication lab was established in the college in 2010.

♦NASA finds the ‘Lost Galaxy’

NASA finds the ‘Lost Galaxy’

  • Recently, the Hubble Space Telescope of NASA captured the images of the NGC 4535 which is also known as the “Lost Galaxy”.  The image highlights that the young and hot stars that hang out are the bright blue spots. On the other hand, older and cooler stars are highlighted by the bright shades nearer to the center.
  • An amateur astronomer Leland S. Copeland fixed his telescope lens on a distant galaxy in the Virgo constellation first in 1950s. He then withnessed an eerie spiral that was shrouded in dust. He named the spiral as “The Lost Galaxy”.

♦30th Jan: Martyrs Day or Shaheed Diwas

  • Martyr’s Day or Shaheed Diwas is observed on January 30 every year in the memory of Mahatma Gandhi. On January 30, 1948, Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the Nation was assassinated at Gandhi Smriti in the Birla House during his evening prayers.
  • Gandhiji or Bapu was a freedom fighter who sacrificed his life for the welfare and growth of India.

♦Last Sunday of January: World Leprosy Day

  • The last Sunday of January is celebrated as the World Leprosy Day every year. The day is observed all across the world.
  • The day is celebrated to raise knowledge about the leprosy. It also seeks to propagate the need and importance of eradicating the disease. As per the World Health Organization (WHO), the goal of the observance of the day in year 2021 is to beat leprosy by spreading more information regarding the disease.
